All my life I wanted to make that dress with my mother. She passed away and I finally made the dress in her honor as she was paralyzed and could no longer sew in the last years. So when she died, I mourned her so much my sweet husband took me to Atlanta and I saw the original gown by Walter Plunket. After 2 hours of sketching, I finally made the gown. I showed it at the Washington State Fair and there was a glass case to display the gown, hat & purse in protection on a mannequin. I put a gold curtain rod in the case just for fun. I wondered if anyone would notice and know the skit after all these years. People would stop, laugh uncontrollably and go grab someone else and pull them over to see it. YES GENIUS because we of course expected Harvey to say it a funny way! When Vicki suprisingly said it after the slap OMG died laughing because Sissy was abused throughout the skit and got her revenge!
“Thank you, I saw it in the window and I just couldn’t resist it”. An all-time classic line that I remembered even though I was 9 years old when I saw this skit. I’m in my 50’s now and still see it as pure genius.
He told a very funny story about that. He was panicking in his dressing room, because he couldn't find the voice for the character. Nothing he tried worked. But when he went ahead and put on the mustache, suddenly he voice came to him! He said the feel of the mustache on his face put him into that character.
This is a comedy masterpiece. Harvey Korman's impersonation of Rhett Butler was remarkable, how he transformed his face and his speech, you almost believe it's really Clark Gable saying those lines. I love you Carol Burnett, and I thank you for all joy and laughter you brought to my life.

Ms. Lawrence was often the person who stole the scenes, an absolutely brilliant comedic actor! She was also very pretty, I think most people overlooked that part of her, too.
Comedic genius was in every department on that show. Mackie's idea for including the curtain rod on that dress and the Wiggins walk he suggested for Carol when choosing that skirt were sheer genius.

Nothing funnier or smarter. I hope those writers had lots of success in their careers...
it's genius, and a bit of relief in two ways. I know it's a dicey thing to judge a book or movie by modern day standards, but both Rhett's "hey, you destroyed my love for you" when he was just as cutting and dismissive as Scarlet, and how the slaves were depicted, is a bit creepy. So, watching him get a face slammed into his face, and Sissy shutting up the spoiled southern Belle, is just pure bliss.

@@JustanotherLiz It's called farce and you have to be familiar with the movie they are parodying. It's hilarious. KITH and Mad came much later and are funny, but any of them would kill for a classic tv comedy moment like this. You're just young, but you'll grow of out it.
My mother roared with laughter, too! I was a young teen then. I recently saw GWTW, again. Her impression of Scarlett is so funny. I even thought of Carol Burnett watching the original, especially how she treats Melanie. Carol got that spot on, lol. One of the funniest bits ever shown on TV!
Omg, when he carried up the stairs, almost stumbling over her clothes and straining his back.. I just lost it! LOL! He could have dropped her too. And Carol tumbling down the stairs! Even SNL couldn't pull this off.
If you listen carefully, Carol Burnett says, "Just keep going" as he carries her upstairs. I don't know if he really strained his back, but it looked like it. Greatest sketch ever!
I remember watching this special show and when Carol came down those stairs with the curtain rod on with the drapes as a dress... THE SCENE WENT EPIC it became a legend of comedy scenes.. When she came down in that dress with the track still in it I almost fell out of my chair. Bob Mackie was a genius. I understand they could hardly go one because they couldn't get the audience to stop laughing.
Rebecca Moore Even the Russian call girls, watching on CZcams in Moscow, laughed so hard they almost, ahem, well, you know, fondly remembering 2013, and Ole Big MacDonald.
Omg this is my Favorite Skit Ever. Growing up, I wanted to "BE" Carol Burnett! Fifty years later, I have the Hair Color and I entertain myself constantly. Plus, I *have* the Carol Burnett "Went With The Wind" doll on Display in my living room. Just Sayin'.
Best skit in television history. I remember it like it was yesterday-our entire family glued to the television set. When Carol came out in her curtain dress, the room exploded in laughter. Just thinking about it gets me laughing. Harvey Kerman really looked like Clark Gable.
I'd love to know whether Carol's spoonerism when delivering her "I'll never be hungry again" speech -- "If I have to lie, steat, cheal, or kill" -- was scripted or genuinely accidental. Also -- HOW GREAT is the exchange between Carol and Vicki: "Cissie, show this Yankee the door." "Shoot, for three hundred dollars I'll show him anything he wants."? GREAT STUFF.
My Mom's favorite skit of all time. She laughed, just describing this for years. Cancer silenced your laugh early, yet I still hear you, watching this...
Classic! The first time I watched this as a teenager the green drapery rod dress had me laughing so hard I could not catch my breath and tears rolling down my face….one of those absolutely memorable moments! Great to watch this…it has been decades! And its very different time! I needed to laugh!
It was later syndicated as part of “Carol Burnett & Friends” in 1979 and 1980 according to this show’s intro at 0:00. The show was taped at CBS Television City which is now the legendary, Bob Barker Studio.
What’s great is that it’s comedy that doesn’t punch down at anyone. It’s just a loving tribute to a classic movie with clever humor, no one is really the butt of the joke so everyone can laugh.
Bob Mackey was a genius 🥰I remember seeing this episode when it originally aired and we couldn't stop laughing when Carol came walking down the stairs wearing the curtain rod 😂 The writers were incredible coming up with new stories every week 🥰
This skit is unbearably good. Anyone notice how despite it being the Seventies Vickie Lawrence et al had the good sense to not be in blackface. Good on everyone involved. Carol Burnett is a national treasure. ❤️

After 50+ years it is still so funny! It is a timeless skit. I remember sitting in our living room and the whole family was laughing so hard. It was a more innocent time when we actually had “family” shows.
These 4 together were hilarious. I remember watching with my mom an dad when I was a kid. This particular skit had me in tears. The reactions between them all, but especially Tim and Harvey throughout the show were classic. I miss the good old days of nice clean humor. They were so far ahead of their time with their comedy and their writers were phenomenal as well.
'Went with the Wind,' was one of Carol's funniest sketches ever. From the moment Carol makes her first appearance the audience starts laughing non-stop for nearly 30 whole seconds -- and that punchline at the end!! I won't ruin it for you. You'll just have to watch.
The audience laughed longer than that. They edited most of it out to fit the broadcast time slot. In an interview, Carol said that they did not tell anyone about the dress but had to tell Harvey so he would not break up when she started down the stairs. Only Carol, Harvey and Bob Mackie knew what she was going to wear.
'Went with the Wind' was simply one of the best sketches ever...... Especially for those who grew up reading Margaret Mitchell's epic 'Gone with the Wind'.
I had forgotten that Dinah Shore was in this sketch. It still makes me laugh, after all these years. "I saw it in a window, and I just couldn't resist it." 🤣🤣🤣
“Stick your face in the punch bowl”! Dying laughing! My husband brought me most of The Carol Burnett Show on DVD-as he knew how much I missed my family (my WWII Hero Uncle married my mom’s oldest sister, one of her 10 siblings, and though they married for the first time later in life, my Uncle had a house built for my aunt & 7 female family members of aunts, mom, me & my sister-all the rest moved away, and we all moved in with them, and I am so grateful for those memories-especially after my most beloved Gramma died on my 11th birthday & mom died 12 years later on Christmas my Junior year of college) , and we just watched the same day of self-quarantine & Went with The Wind was on the first Disc. And believe me, unless there is an Eagles game on, my husband & I rarely watch TV together. He’ll watch my DVD of the Gilmore Girls entire 7 years of the series, plus the revival, so the few things we watch together other than our Eagles, Gilmore Girls, and all the DVD’s of the Dream Martin Variety Shows & the Roast, which my sister & I bought for my aunt & I luckily was the one to inherit them.
@@mkimmick61 I guess I am one of the few under 50 that would get it. We didn’t have cable for the majority of my childhood, so I watched a LOT of old TV shows. The Dick Van Dyke Show was one of my favorites. My mom was a big fan of Carol Burnett, so I was familiar with this episode. It helped me understand the storyline of GWTW since I was too young to really get it when I watched it. It never really made sense to me. I just remember a party at the beginning, a baby being born in the middle, the city burning, then Scarlett eats some carrots and throws up. Like I said, it made no sense 😄
I moved from the West to the Deep South just after watching this on TV. It has stayed in my memory for over 40 years as the most brilliantly hilarious skit Carol has ever done!
I actually fell on the floor, laughing uncontrollably when Carol came out wearing the drapes. For more than a couple of months afterward, I would remember the scene or someone would mention it and I'd crack up again.
Just saw the re-release of Gone With the Wind in the movie theater and when she sees the curtains and gets the idea for the dress I laughed because all I could think of was this sketch.
I remember watching this on tv with my Grandmother. I was about 6 or 7 & can still remember my Grandmother laughing her ass off . Thank you Carol Burnett for all those laughs you brought to our home XO !!!
ME TOO! My grandma was born and raised on a Texas farm, and life was tough. The only time I ever saw her just flat lose it was when Carol came down the stairs with that curtain rod.
I remember watching this the night it aired on tv and laughing until I was choking when Carol wore the green curtain dress and told Rhett how she saw it in a window and had to have it. Brilliant writing and acting!
I am Russia and I saw " Gone with the Winds" maybe a hundred times since I was about 14! Read the book in three languages maybe 20 times. I HAVE NEVER SEEN IT, and I couldn't have! And now it's 2022, and I am 48 and I see this for the first time in my life and THIS IS BRILLIANT!!!! I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!!!
I of course saw this as a young tween when it first aired on TV. Me and my sister and mom were in tears from laughing so hard. I remembered the curtain rod scene but the other comic golden moments of this sketch are undoubtedly Vicky Lawrence just walking around and singing during Starlet's soliloqy and Carol's hilarious two slow tumbles down the stairs. I also always wondered if Tim Conway's bit about horse race betting was in the dialogue or if he as usual went off script and ad libbed that. Carol was an underrated physical comedienne because often what she does is subtle but brilliant and in character. I recently saw an old What's My Line clip with her as the secret guest where she disguised her voice (people often forget she was a well known Broadway actress before her comic breakthrough show) and she was so charming and funny at the same time.

Well, he got something even better. His costume has been displayed since 2009 in a place of honor in the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History on the mall in Washington, DC.
@@bruced.campbell4498 As well it should be!
Bob Mackie is one of the best costume designers in Hollywood.
Yet, what's the thing that Mr. Mackie is best known for?
The curtain rod dress!
nah the dentist was by far the best
@@Lauren-vd4qe I can't decide between that and the "Siamese elephants joined at the trunk". Remember? The one's that when one would sneeze, the other's eyes would get real big. "Snorkit!" Tim Conway was one of a kind.
For me,THIS was the BEST skit of The Carol Burnett Show!!
I just watched Gone with the Wind and Vicky Lawrence, pacing around and humming during the birthing scene killed me! She was favorite.
I remember watching this when it 1st aired! I almost rolled off the couch I was laughing so hard. My parents were both roaring so loud, they scared the heck out of our dogs! It's 2017 & still one of the funniest routines on TV EVER!
Trixieb Beldon Until Trump and his 5 wives came South; that is, Ivana, Marla, Ivanka(wink, wink), Kellyann, and of course, that most faithful of all, LindsayG.
Agreed. I was maybe 13 or so when this show was introduced to me on Nick at Night and thank goodness. So funny.
Trixieb Beldon meh it’s not that funny, it’s over acting. I find Kids In The Hall and MadTv funny, not this. Oh it’s a lil bit funny, but not lol funny.
02:45 "OH Billy Joe, my goodness I thought you jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge" 🤪🤪🤪🤪
Poor Billy Joe McAlister.
🤣🤣🤣
I love jokes that reference songs, even if I'm not too crazy about the song.
I remember that hit!
I missed that joke the first ten times I watched this skit.😊
When Carol wore the green velvet curtains with the rod still in, I never laughed so hard. It was the funniest skit I ever saw.
Hello Linda
How are you doing today/
One of the greatest memories of my 70s childhood!! 👏 👏 👏
Omg, when he carried up the stairs, almost stumbling over her clothes and straining his back.. I just lost it! LOL! He could have dropped her too. And Carol tumbling down the stairs! Even SNL couldn't pull this off.
@@Gwen3344 - Gilda Radner was famous for breaking a rib in an SNL skit but it looks like Carol outdid her!
SNL has nothin on these guys. Oh they make me laugh all the time.
He was giggling and holding his laugh when he finally made it up...
If you listen carefully, Carol Burnett says, "Just keep going" as he carries her upstairs. I don't know if he really strained his back, but it looked like it. Greatest sketch ever!
@@jessfrankel5212 You're right, she did!
I remember watching this special show and when Carol came down those stairs with the curtain rod on with the drapes as a dress... THE SCENE WENT EPIC it became a legend of comedy scenes.. People all over were talking about that special one for months.. had so many laughing in stitches. Best yet ever. Still luv and enjoy watching that scene today. Thank you Carol and friends. YOu were all perfect.
It is just brilliant!
I remember too! I laughed til I had no air left.
Beautifully said.
you do know thats what Scarlett actually did
My favorite.😁
"If I have to Lie, Steat, Cheal and murder, I won't be defeated," immortal flubs to live by.

Can you imagine the live audience? They sound like they were in hysterics! Funniest sketch ever!

When she came down in that dress with the track still in it I almost fell out of my chair. Bob Mackie was a genius. I understand they could hardly go one because they couldn't get the audience to stop laughing.
Rebecca Moore Even the Russian call girls, watching on CZcams in Moscow, laughed so hard they almost, ahem, well, you know, fondly remembering 2013, and Ole Big MacDonald.

fact, not ignorant. Bob Mackie is sexual deviant.
I wasn't referring to Mr. Mackie!!!
"For $300 I'll show him anything he wants!"
One of her most memorable episodes! Everyone was perfect in this! No one writes like this anymore, and if they did who could perform it?
Carol Burnett fans. 🙂
Literally was thinking the same thing about the genius of the writers and performers who brought it to life so brilliantly!
The Carol Burnett Shows were some of the best ever!
Her coming down the stairs with that curtain rod will stay with me forever. Comedy royalty
And let's NOT forget Dinah Shore as "Melody". She could clown it up, and did, with the very Best!!!
LOOK AWAY...LOOK AWAY
I can't. That dress is absolutely hysterical😆
😂😂😂
Thank ya!
I saw it in the window and I just couldn't resist it!
ikr 😆
Grew up with this show, and I miss it! This is good comedy, as opposed to much of the crap we have today on the public airwaves.
I concur.
I remember laughing so hard I had tears running down my face.
I really loved the curtain dress!!
Wow Carol Burnette is sexy and beautiful as a Burnette ! She resembles the real Scarlet !!
The longest running laugh in TV history.
Harvey Korman's Ratt Butler / Clark Gable is spot on!
Deb Babe Harvey Korman could also do a great John Wayne. Talent like that doesn't exist today.
Rich Little was great too. The good ole days!
When he does those Gable facial expressions, its hilarious.
He Out-Gabled Gable himself!
He looked more like Gable than gable did!
He had the Gable squint down!
Dinah Shore's Cousin Melanie impression is awesome.
Vicki going back and forth singing! 😂😂😂God, I love her!!
"Why don't you stick your head in the punch bowl; it needs more sugar". That was hilarious. I haven't laughed this hard in a long time.
Classic! The first time I watched this as a teenager the green drapery rod dress had me laughing so hard I could not catch my breath and tears rolling down my face….one of those absolutely memorable moments! Great to watch this…it has been decades! And its very different time! I needed to laugh!
2019 now - and this first aired in 1976. It is 43 years old and it still makes me laugh. It is comedy gold.
Eliza Gaskell ---. Indeed. GOLD !!!!!
It was later syndicated as part of “Carol Burnett & Friends” in 1979 and 1980 according to this show’s intro at 0:00. The show was taped at CBS Television City which is now the legendary, Bob Barker Studio.
This was brilliant 👏
I remember watching it in the 7th grade with my dad. We were the comedians of the family and watched each week.
Carol Burnett was my teen idol.
What’s great is that it’s comedy that doesn’t punch down at anyone. It’s just a loving tribute to a classic movie with clever humor, no one is really the butt of the joke so everyone can laugh.
Conway's Brashley - "We'll win the next one."
Still cracks me up after all these years..norhing like this today to make you laugh deeply...loooool
Wimp.
Does take away from it a little bit.

After 50+ years it is still so funny! It is a timeless skit. I remember sitting in our living room and the whole family was laughing so hard. It was a more innocent time when we actually had “family” shows.
Honestly the best costumes I’ve ever seen in a spoof, such a timeless spoof skit.
I can't understand the people who give this a thumbs down. They must have zero senses of humor!
Just a passel of damn Yankees, sugah.
I think it's just because they have such a hard on for the original movie
Their moral and laughter compass are not working!
Perhaps their sense of humor just went with the wind... *SWEEPING ORCHESTRAL LINE*
What wind?
My absolute favorite Carol Burnett performance of all time.
This is arguably the most hilarious piece of comedy in television history. Carol Burnett is a gift to the world and we are most undeserving
Comedy that can't be made today.
Good clean comedy! Nothing funnier!

Real audience too.
'Went with the Wind' was simply one of the best sketches ever...... Especially for those who grew up reading Margaret Mitchell's epic 'Gone with the Wind'.
Much respect for not posting a spoiler!
And yes, the sketch is gorgeous from start to finish.

Harvey Korman was also hilarious as Rhat Butler. Nailed it down perfectly
One of best iconic in television when she walked out for the first in drapes.
You must read the book
The curtain dress has to be one of the funniest things ever on TV! 🤣
I LOVE the part when she comes down the stairs in the drapes. Priceless! I have wanted to use that as a Halloween Costume for years.
You only live once. Wonder if anyone would get it. I dressed like Alex from A Clockwork Orange recently and nobody got it. I had fun though.
That would be a great costume. I think anyone under the age of 50 wouldn't get it. This is comedy gold.
I absolutely love it that she remembered the woman and her brother from school. I have always loved her.
@spirals 73 Funnels... water.... cloud (fiberfill)... and a stuffed toy shark.
This is simply a classic. Just like Carol and the crew. Tim Conway & Harvey Korman could make dead people laugh.
Especially now. R.I.P., Tim.
Harvey and Tim were hilarious!
Harvey was a great Clark Gable !
Just saw the re-release of Gone With the Wind in the movie theater and when she sees the curtains and gets the idea for the dress I laughed because all I could think of was this sketch.
I think we all do, now! No way to un-see that curtain rod on her shoulders!!!
This is still the most brilliant comedy sketch I've ever seen.
Genius Comedy has never been more appropriately applied.
No other Comedian identified with their audience in quite the same way Carol did! She was and remains brilliant!!! 😍
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!!!
that dress is a classic, done by Bob Mackie
Comedy gold. Rest in Peace Tim Conway
I hope Mr. Conway was aware of how adored and loved he was. He brought great joy to so many people.
He was SO funny. A college friend managed to have a phone conversation with him a few years later.
I just saw it in the window and I couldn't resist it 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 still as funny as it was when it first aired !!
