‘Will be the next Kashmir’: Heavy gunfight in Manipur village leaves 1 dead, 9 injured

Correction:
At 14:43, local media subsequently reported that 10 suspected Kuki militants were killed and five were injured. However Indigenous Tribal Forum said that one was killed and another nine were injured. This number was also confirmed by the Churachandpur district hospital.
Phougakchao village in Manipur’s Bishnupur district, which has been witnessing intensified cross-firing for about a week, saw a heavy gunfight in the police station area on July 27. The bombing and firing began in the wee hours and continued through-out the day in Phoguakchao, Terakhongsanbi and Tronglaobi.
Newslaundry covered the gunfight on the spot and spoke to several villagers who were compelled to leave their houses to escape the continued cross-firing from Kuki-dominated hill areas. Nawang Angom, a resident of Terakhongsanbi, said: “Manipur will be the next Kashmir.”
As per the reports in local newspapers, at least 10 from the Kuki community were killed in the gunfight and five persons were injured, including a Kumaon regiment soldier, a Manipur police commando and three village volunteers.
