Manipur: NTT Reports from Frontline Conflict Zone, Under the Shadow of Weapons | Tamal Saha | NTT

  • It’s been over two months since violence gripped Manipur. More than 120 people have lost their lives, several injured, thousands displaced, homeless, and many have picked up guns. NTT visited a frontline in Kangpopki district where civilians have chosen guns over their careers. Carefully nestled in the nooks and crannies of the mighty mountains and loaded with arms and ammunition, they have set up secret bunkers, away from common sight. People constantly monitoring the movement on the other side, restricting the entry of outsiders, and vigilant of every little development. There are forces, police deployed, but these people aren’t scared, not even to disclose their identities. All agree that peace cannot come from the barrel of a gun but none willing to surrender their weapons as of now. There were young children too at the frontline camp. They are scared and want to get back to school but unsure when and how.
Note: Team NTT does not endorse violence in any form. We do not endorse unlawful ownership and use of guns, nor do we owe allegiance to any community. NTT ardently believes in peace, brotherhood and harmony.
Location - as disclosed by the people.

The villagers are so patient. If it were me getting those questions from you. I would have smacked you in the head😂.
It is clearly seen that these villagers are not on the offensive, They are just guarding their place, their belongings, their loved ones, coupled with fear of a raid from the enemy.
That is the only option they have in this situation.

You know Mr. Tamal Saha ! The Kuki Tribals are simple, honest and humble people. They are unable to speak out what's in their heart & thought. They are there compelled to protect the life of children, mothers, fathers, students, their lands etc. These brave volunteers are showing their students exemplary bravery to not surrender to the wrong doings of others and to not let evil rule the world.
You are a young journalist and doing a great job in visiting the frontlines. We appreciate that.
We will be waiting for your report on your visits to the invading aggressor troops of Arambai Tenggol, Meitei Leepun, state police commandos. And we expect that you interview them, request them & lecture them to lay down their arms and surrender themselves, and to shun the path of evil. If they accept your advice, then peace will automatically be restored, trust me.

It’s easy to talk about peace sir! I respect your bravery for actually going down to the field and reporting from the ground. However, sir it’s easy for you to talk about peace at this moment! The situation in MAnipur is so bad that people are compelled to take up guns. It’s easy to say peace is the most important or that everybody should strive for peace. However sir what you are actually forgetting is that our situation is this helpless. Their situation is such that if they don’t defend they could be killed, even if they defend they could be killed. The army officials are there and doing their best and hats off to them! But our village defenders are also just trying to protect what is theirs. Nobody on the face of the earth will quietly sit and watch what is theirs being taken away!

Sad to know the bitter truth, perpetrators are those who are running the state govt..the mastermind of the current ethnic cleansing against the kuki people.

When our very existence is under threat what choice is left for us except to do what we can to safeguard what we have and pray that our tomorrow will be better than what we are forced to face today. Pray our countrymen and do your utmost so that you or your children will not have to go through the same things as us. Choose wisely whom you put in charge your/our lives & your/our destiny.

The authority of the central government must be dominant and neutral. , support from local government and religious leaders, local community leaders, hopefully Manipur will return to peace, the name of the conflict brings destruction, loss of life and property, because of that all components involved must work together to rebuild Manipur, peace is restored in Manipur, God bless u all.
