Like what somebody said. This is assuming you have acidic battery. But most of toys and electronics use alkaline batteries. Hence you need to use something acidic.
Baking Soda can work with Alkaline batteries. Since the Soda is barely a base, somewhere around PH 9, It can still bring the alkaline down to a cleanable level.
Putting an acid directly on a strong base can cause it to heat. Use Baking Soda, rinse, then vinegar, rinse and dry.
Almost all AA batteries are Alkaline and Alkaline batteries does not have acid inside them. The only batteries we use that have acid in them is Lead Acid Batteries found in Cars. Even when an alkaline battery leak, it does not leak acid. Alkaline batteries has an electrolyte materials inside rather than acid. And when they leak, they leak Potassium hydroxide. Potassium hydroxide is a strong base not an acid. So you can not clean Alkaline batteries with baking soda because baking soda is a base. You need to use vinegar or lemon juice because they are acids.

After watching another video, I agree. I don’t see how using a base like BS will remove an alkaline base material. Isn’t that like cleaning water with water? Doesn’t make sense. As you say, you need an acidic solution like vinegar or lemon juice to remove alkaline… basic science!
I’ve heard of some people using Pepsi or Coke because of the citric acid (did i leave out RC cola? sorry 😭)

Baking soda is a base and should only be used to clean acids. Battery "acid" from alkaline batteries (i.e., the only kind you should be using) should be cleaned up with an acid like vinegar because alkaline battery acid is actually a base!
Can you tell by looking at the corrosion if it came from an alkaline or acid battery?

Apparently, your corrosion was on the walls of the battery chamber. On mine, it uses a "C" battery, and the negative side sits flat on the bottom of the chamber. It leaked. Now there is a crust of the "acid" of the floor of the chamber. Will white vinegar remove the "acid" or just loosen it? Should any of the "acid" remain on the floor of the chamber will a flat head screw driver remove the remainder, or do I need to add more white vinegar?

You know what sucks? Alkaline battery juice eats flashlights. No matter how well you clean it, some of the metal is gone. First, you need acid to neutralize alkaline, unless you had carbon zinc cells in there. But I find it easier to just use my dremel minimite and wire wheel. It's faster and gets enough of the crud off the contacts without having to put water and chemicals down my light or electronics.
Is this ok to be washing down the drain?
Would this method work on an old Ryobi power drill with battery corrosion?
It's better than doing nothing at all. Anytime you remove corrosion to expose the original metal contacts, you'll improve the devices operation. Good luck! DANDLINC
Baking soda treatment didn't work on my electronic scale...but 50/50 vinegar and water did the trick.
But how do you get the battery out before cleaning the toy? My daughter has an interactive wand (from Harry Potter) and there's a battery stuck down inside that I can't get loose at all. I'm afraid to drop any vinegar water or lemon juice down in there ...

I will give this a shot. I just noticed my battery charger that I use for Alkaline batteries and there is this white stuff everywhere. Hopefully this will fix it and I can start charging my batteries once again. Thank you.
You are NOT trying to recharge alkaline batteries I hope! Alkaline batteries are NOT supposed to be recharged!!

I am curious. Do I need to put some light lubricant on the metal? I ask because I have a plastic toy and the battery compartment is corroded. After clean with water, I am thinking about apply some light lubricant to prevent corrosion again in the future.
Go to your local auto parts store and get a small packet of electronic grease.

Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate: NaHCO3.
filbertman's comment is apropos, as alkalines are most common these days. If you don't know which it is, try a drop of vinegar. It should foam vigorously as it reacts with the alkaline residue. If it doesn't, no harm done, go to the baking soda.
Be careful when mixing water and electronics. If you're not sure don't do it. Also Keith and citizensaneusa are right you should be using a weak acid like vinegar to neutralize the leak. Using baking soda for alkaline batteries is pointless.
Baking Soda can bring the Ph level down quite a bit to make it cleanable. Alkaline batteries are about Ph14, and Baking soda is Ph9, water is Ph7, and Vinegar is Ph2.5
This is assuming you have an acid battery. If you have an alkaline battery, you need to do the opposite (use an acid instead like vinegar).

+danh le Yes - he got it backwards - baking soda is also an alkali so he actually perpetuates the issue...
Wrongish....baking soda is a PH 9, Alkaline is PH 14, water is PH 7, and Vinegar is PH 2.5. Mixing PH14 with PH 2.5 can cause a reaction. Depending on the amount of corrosion.
