Delonghi Magnifica Esam 4200 In Depth - Best Cheap Bean to Cup / Automatic Espresso Machine?

  • This is my unboxing, setup and detailed review of the DeLonghi Magnifica Esam 4200 bean to cup coffee machine, or Automatic espresso machine.
There are lots of newer low cost machines on the market, but I reckon this one is still one of the best cheap options, and I show & explain why in this video. For me this is one of the most underrated machines on the market, it's not perfect and I demonstrate why this is the case, but these imperfections I think are more than acceptable for the cost, and can be worked around as I explain in the video.

This is my 2nd Keurig coffee maker of this model. czcams.com/users/postUgkxBrV-RbF5Nk0Rlt9i15aao-YMzqzTG8Vf The first worked fine for more than 2 years, and I could still get a decent cup of coffee out of it if I fiddled with it when I decided to replace it. The problem I had with my first unit was this: When attempting to brew a cup of coffee, the unit would either keep brewing until the coffee was undrinkable or it would not run long enough and the coffee produced was way too strong. I cleaned the unit as best I could but it did not help. So in the end it was just too much trouble to get a good cup of coffee out of it, so I decided to replace it with a new one, which has been working great since I unpacked it.

The technique of turning the steam wand on to cool the machine when both ligths are blinking is a game changer! I can't tell you the amount of times I've missed the train for work because I was waiting for the machine to reset after accidentally switching to steam before pulling my shot!

I've had mine 13 years and never knew the coffee temperature was adjustable. Press and hold the descale button on mine to activate, ground coffee button to adjust. Also, when selecting double shot, my machine runs its grinder for approximately twice as long as for single shot (I've timed it over 10 shots per size). I guess machines like this are only as good as the setup at the factory. Thanks for the video.

Can I ask, for an Americano, what's the difference between the (Expresso + Water) you show and just increasing the volume of water going through the brew by turning the "coffee quantity selection" knob dial to say half-way?

This is the best video I've seen on this coffee machine.
I learnt so much and in particular the fact that a double shot "isn't a double shot", was really valuable. Setting the client to "3" also worked for me. I'm sure it was in the description in the manual but I was unaware of the fact that you could change the heat of the brew and I had mine set far too low so again, thank you for that. I will put this out on my Twitter feed.
Superb and I love this machine and have been using mine for close on 8 years with no problems added to which the support from DeLonghi is 2nd to none.

Hey! Would love to see a video around getting the best out of the magnifica s smart. I’ve recently switched to it from the Philips 5400, which I guess is probably a bit of a downgrade, but the Philips just didn’t make drinks hot enough for my liking 😂 I drink lattes and on the Philips everything was done for me at the touch of a button with preprogrammed settings etc, now with the magnifica s smart I’m trying to understand how to get the best from it but could use a little guidance. I’ve watched a fair few of your videos/read some of the blogs.

Before I have bought DeLonghi Primadonna Class,
I have been using this machine for years and before I have bought this Magnifica, I did a deep research.
    In my opinion,
this is the best cheap been to cup coffee machine by a respected brand.
    And the fact,
that it's in production for let's say fourteen years,
    speak for itself.
Yes, my new Primadonna Class is better (obviously).
    But for this price,
    you won't be disappointed.

I have just come across your videos. I have had this bean-to-cup coffee machine over the last year or so. This may be a stupid question, but when you made your americano at the end you did the shots of coffee then you added the additional water via the wand. Being lazy I have set my two shot program to fill my mug (with space for a dash of milk). I am guessing using this lazy technique I am overextracting the coffee and getting a poor result?

I have the Magnifica and I have decaf (for health reasons) and hubby has full strength. I grind in a separate grinder (hubby's beans have pride of place in the auto grinder area) and I usually add 9g of ground coffee. I'm worried if I add more the machine will poop itself as it specifically states in the flip up lid of the "add your own grinds" section says strictly one scoop. So are you saying the auto grind is usually about 10g and "double" is 12g. My coffees aren't as dark as hubby's. So realistically I could increase my decaf amount to 12g? Happy days.

    • @Coffee_Kev
      @Coffee_Kev  Před 2 lety +1

Hi Martin, yeah there's a tendency among coffee machine manufacturers to add to the range rather than to replace, especially when they have a machine that has done well. I will do a comparison video, but in a nutshell the newer ones are a bit smaller, a tad quieter, buttons are programmable in terms of volume by pressing and holding, and the S Smart has the decent panarello wand that the dedica e6c85 has. Cheers, Kev.

Hi Kev, I've had this machine around a year now and found this the best / in depth review about the coffee machine. I do have one question for you though regarding the water adjustment and extraction of the espresso shot. Why did you come to the conclusion that changing the amount of water, means adjusting the amount of water used during the brewing process? Personally, I don't believe this is true. I think the machine adjusts the amount of water depending on the strength level you chose with the right knob. Then the only control we really have is over the grind level. Obviously a full strength shot made with less water will taste stronger than a single shot mixed with a full cup of water. If you try the different water settings on the left, you will notice that even when brewing a full cup of coffee, the initial 5 seconds or so is the espresso shot been delivered and after that it is mainly water. Also, with this bean to cup machine it seems impossible to deliver an espresso shot that is delivered in 15 seconds. Maybe it's because I am not using freshly roasted / high quality beans. But I have tried a lot of beans from the Lavazza range.

I ordered this yesterday and it arrived this morning. Very nearly sent it back as it nearly ended out the window. Followed the setup instructions to the letter and it failed to function. Tried later and for some reason it worked. I love it although not yet figure out how in hell to froth the milk. I can bring it to temperature but it just doesn't want to froth. I get a little foam on the top like someone has spat in my coffee and that's it.
Still love it though, I know I'm not going to master it too quickly and when I do - going to celebrate with a flat white and a cappuccino then practice learning how to draw pictures.

I bought one of these and I just could not get on with it. That lack of being a double shot but not adding double coffee annoyed me. To be honest I was the problem. I just don't like espresso coffee. I did try a number of speciality coffees but that probably made things worse. The coffee you like is what you are brought up with. In my younger days, people had a percolator on the stovetop. I think you can still get them. Some people had a course grind and boiled it. That could give a good taste. Are we using too many different methods to make coffee? I will stick to my Sage Precision but that takes a bit of dialling in too.

Of course, if you want to record your preferred settings for when others mess it up, you can just put a dab of paint or - in case the boss has a cleaning fetish - scratch a mark into the fascia. (But not, I suspect, if it's a loan machine for review purposes😂)

I love this machine, but I'll admit I'm not particularly fond of the steam wand.
Better than a kuerig kcup machine though, thats for sure.

Why everyone is so happy and im not? I bought this machine today after my Melitta break down, and im 100 % was happy with it and now im sad with delonghi. Because coffee is not strong enough. I used 4 beans from 5 on melitta and here i put the strongest beans and its weak like wee.....i cant believe it😢😢😢😢

hello , why changing the grind settings WHILE the grinding process ?

    • @Coffee_Kev
      @Coffee_Kev  Před rokem +1

Hi :-), simply because if you grind finer while the burrs aren't spinning, it's possible (in theory, at least) to take burrs out of alignment due to bits of bean getting stuck in between the burrs.

Ive probably owned this machine for 3 years and its been repaired under warranty once. Overall I would never recommend this. It leaks relentlessly. Even after being repaired. The descaling cycle timesout after a period making you start again. The steamer is extremely under-powered. Your grounds get everywhere within the internals of the machine. They never all land in the grounds basket. Ive also had issues with the grinder especially with darker beans. This was my first bean to cup machine and its made never want to buy a delonghi again. A truly abysmal machine please buy something else.

Don't buy this model. I had this machine for 5 years and had to send it back for repair three times. Folks get the Delonghi Cafe Corso ESAM 2800 machine, I've had it six years and still going strong .

It could be that you were unlucky, to be fair, I know many people who've had the 4200 for years without issue. Cheers.

@@Coffee_Kev what happens is the burr grinder wears out so you have to set it finer and finer over time

Interesting, I've had one for about 5 years now without issue. I also had use of one at my old work going through about a kilogram of beans a day. It was still going ok after atleast a year of use.
