    Here's some more subdermal color zone fun facts since it's almost impossible to find comprehensive information about it:
    ~The ears have LOTS of blood vessels that flush often (to help cool the body down) so they tend to have a very reddish tone, HOWEVER, the earlobes actually have very few blood vessels by comparison, and thus tend to skew more yellow/white.
    ~Adding cooler tones around the eyes, particularly the sides of the nose bridge and under the brow give the illusion of deeper set eyes. You could also put them on the topmost part of the cheeks and outer corners of the eyes, but it runs the risk of looking like "raccoon mask" eye circles.
    ~Skin tends to thin with age, so older faces tend to have more color variations than younger faces due to the more apparent influence of subdermal features such as blood vessels and hair follicles. Older individuals also usually have some form of sun damage on their faces, so freckles, moles, leopard spots, and sun creases can all be more apparent than in younger people.
    ~Hands and wrists are also a good place to add subdermal color. Most people have visible veins/arteries on their wrists, and hands are full of wonderful little capillaries and nerves. Adding a cool tone to the ball of the hand (aka the lowest part of the palm) and the wrist while adding warm tones around the fingers and pads of the palm makes the hands so much more alive.

    Instead of adding black, it’s better to add blue. This will react with the warmer pigments to create a more natural freckle color.

    • @DollyPop
      @DollyPop  Před 2 lety +1

      Very good advice! I suppose it depends on the character. If it were a red head, you wouldn’t want to blue. But for a pale kid like me, the blue might be more appropriate. I’ll have to try it!

    I recently watched a video too about someone using different colors, like purple, light blue, green, and yellow to repaint a BJD head. Since then I tried the technique once on a Blythe doll (Fiona), but I just slightly added the other colors. The result already become a bit more realistic. I used pearlescent pastel colors by the way and to be honest, this is why I bought these new pastels some weeks ago. I'm sure I'll apply this technique in the future too:)

    This was great! I've been referring to MiddleRabbit's Medusa video too for my efforts at subdermal color zones, and lemme just say, you two taught me more in two short videos than I learned in my ENTIRE THREE YEARS of art school! Since watching MiddleRabbit's videos, I've been trying to work out SCZs for use over the whole body of the doll, but I've been finding almost zero references for how to place them. It's super easy to find charts for zones in the face, but the body? They're practically non-existent. I'm adding this video to my refences library for future use!

    • @DollyPop
      @DollyPop  Před rokem

      That’s true. There practically isn’t any references. However, if you go by what I discussed, areas that are very thin (like maybe on top of the foot or hands) would be white/yellow. Areas that flush (like chests, butts, etc,) would have the pinkish/orangish/yellowish colors. The areas where veins really collect would be blue/grey as well as places you’d have lots of hair. Then plump areas would be closer to the base skin tone. At least, that’s what I’d assume. 😆

  • @SharmClucas
    @SharmClucas Před 2 lety +1

    Huh. I'd noticed some of this myself due to being sick a lot and realizing that what made me look ill was a shift in hue in certain zones of the face. It's nice to know some of the science behind it so I can more effectively apply it to my art.

    • @DollyPop
      @DollyPop  Před 2 lety

      Oh gosh. I’m so sorry you’ve been so sick that you’ve noticed your coloring change. *hugs* But let me know how this helps your art. I’d love to see how it turns out! ❤️

    • @SharmClucas
      @SharmClucas Před 2 lety +1

      @@DollyPop No worries, I'm used to it and being well taken care of. It's mostly me being curious as an artist about what made things look the way they do. We say people look pale when sick, but most of that is actually the shift of hues around the face, not a change in tint, and that's pretty interesting to me. For example, I noticed the sides of the face outside the eyes will get more of that yellow hue, and the reddish color will creep upward with the sinuses, getting into the whiter and blue zones of the nose area.
      Anyway, I'm sure it'll help my art. That kind of subtlety in color really brings things to life. Reminds me of when I learned about hue shifting between highlights and shadows due to how light works. Making highlights more yellow and shadows more purple (or whatever depending on the color of light) really breathes life into a single hued object.

      @DollyPop  Před 2 lety
