DC HATES And Disrespects Superman

  • Superman is one of the most iconic characters but often appears neglected or entirely disrespected outside of modern DC Comics. Many perceive the character as boring or one-dimensional due to recent adaptations like the Injustice games and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, the latest title in the Batman Arkham series, both featuring evil versions of Superman. In Kill the Justice League, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, and Green Lantern are mind-controlled by Brainiac. The DCEU, with Batman v Superman and Zack Snyder's Justice League, has portrayed a version of Clark Kent missing a key element that makes the character special. Henry Cavill's depiction in the Snyderverse sadly got cut short, with his last appearance in the Black Adam post-credits scene. The upcoming DCU reboot, beginning with Creature Commandos and James Gunn's SUPERMAN, introduces a recast Superman, Lois Lane, and Lex Luthor, along with the inclusion of Hawkgirl and Mr. Terrific. As of right now, the only decent modern Superman adaptations comprise of My Adventures with Superman and Superman & Lois.

I’ve never understood this take. Spider-Man is supposed to be the ultimate hard luck hero. What makes Spider-Man special is that fact that even though his life is a shambles and he constantly gets crapped on, he never gives up. The whole point of the character. If the writers make his life easy and everything works out for him…that is no longer Spider-Man.

I honestly believe in our current societal climate people can’t fathom a character like Superman, every “hero” created in the last 2 decades have been dark, conflicted, morally ambiguous Grey characters which the general audience considers more complex, this has caused a false dichotomy where people assume if a character is a virtue of righteousness or completely evil that they’re boring when it it’s the writing and way these themes are conveyed that out power in these paragons, it’s what Superman stands for, what he chooses to do with all his power, the internal conflict he goes through dictating what is even morally acceptable to do in matters that involve global political issues that aren’t black and white, there’s so much you can gain from characters that are the pinnacle of what humans can become, it just takes a willingness to listen to the lessons being told

    • @utopian4769
      @utopian4769 Před 2 měsíci +122

The problem with the public perception of Superman is that people hyperfixate on the alien god but don't acknowledge the human farmboy. Superman maintains the ideal but Clark Kent is what keeps it grounded. Superman is at his best when he's put up against problems he can't punch away and has to look at with a human perspective, like Lex Luthor. Sure if he wanted to, he could kill Lex and stop HIM specifically from committing evil, but what about the other Lex Luthors of the world who can be just as evil or ruthless? How can you punch away the disparity between the wealthy and poor, or corruption with the government without sacrificing your own values in the process, and becoming what you've always fought against, someone who gets results by abusing power?
What about beings like Darkseid, who is the living incarnation of Tyranny and Evil? How can you kill something that represents a force that exists everywhere?
He can't. And that's how you write Superman. As you said, to write him you have to focus on his internal struggles, make him question his place in human society, and wrestle with the burden of having so much responsibility put on himself. You focus not just on his flaws, but on things he can't accomplish with might alone.

I mean yeah, but we as viewers know that Superman is a good person and isn't storming the capital or whatever. Superman could've turned out good or bad but chooses to do good with his powers, which makes him more compelling. His family instilled in him good values, which contributed to him becoming who he is. I don't know much about The Boys but from what I've heard, Homelander was raised to be a sociopathic narcissist, so how he turned out makes sense, even though it doesn't justify his actions. But what he chooses to do with his power doesn't reflect on Superman.

I honestly don’t think Superman has been done justice on the big screen yet. Reeve came the closest and had many fantastic moments, but didn’t reach his full potential. I think the best adaptation of the character was Smallville. It maintained the core of the character while showing his journey to becoming the hero we all know, unlike the DCEU which turned him into a totally different character in an attempt to make him modern and “relatable.” Batman has finally been perfected on the silver screen with Reeves/Pattinson, so I’m hoping the same can be done with Gunn/Corenswet. Saying 'no one cares' isn't an argument when you're trying to compare like to like, and Goku isn't like Superman in terms of historical significance or getting the ball rolling or being really old for comics or anime or manga AT ALL. Even if we limit ourselves to shonen, if you literally type in, 'what was the first Shonen?' on google you'll find Astroboy there. Goku is important, but he's more important in the same way that most of Marvel's catalogue is: a Silver Ager compared to the golden agers that are Superman and Astroboy. Superman and Astroboy literally carved out the pool that Marvel and Goku swim in. They swim in it well, but the fact remains they stand on the shoulders of the architects of that pool.

@@MaigenMaylightNot so much a blanket standby as it is an accurate one. It’s very true. A lot of people complain about loneliness yet refuse to admit that they are the reason why they’re lonely. A lot of people want to seem dark, introverted and mysterious as they feel this makes them stand out more and appear more attractive and interesting. Everybody loves Batman cuz he’s dark, depressed and lonely plus he’s rich. Most people nowadays only care about money, and appearing superior and dark and powerful. Thats why characters like Omni-Man and Homelander are so popular, that and those shows do a good job of showcasing those characters.
But in reality, Superman is the classic superhero. He’s the meaning of what it means to be someone who can do anything but CHOOSES to do right. Making fun of this trope, is what shows like The Boys and Invincible do very well. But Superman is the personification of love, something that most recent films haven’t shown 100%. I loved MOS and only wish they allowed Snyder to carry on with that character development of Superman. But people just want to be dark and sad for whatever reason, then they complain about everything always being dark and sad. It makes no sense. Tired of it honestly. My bad for the rant.

You know what anoys me about Jonathan Kent in Men of Steel the most?
It could have worked with just a bit of better writing. He was a father who worried about the safety of his adopted son and was caught between keeping Clark safe and doing/supporting what was right. That is an understandable motivation.
And from there you could go to the lesson that you don't always need powers to do the right thing. That he has to be carefull when, how and why he uses his powers. To be carefull not to let his powers go to his head and becoming careless.
But no, They had to go on that whole B.S. to make Superman a Jesus figure, who stands above humanity, which isn't ready for him.

      To point 1: I don't care.
To point 2: No... no his characterization was not the same as it's always been. Because he is not written as Clark Kent. Because the most important part of Superman is the MAN. Clark Kent's humanity, his kindness and his humility. Someone who beliefs in people and inspires them to be better. Someone who has all that power but would see helping a little girl get her cat from a tree just as worth of his time because it's right. Because it's decent. And above all, it's kind.
Man of Steel and BvS Clark is mopey, cold, distant and treats helping people as a chor.
I wouldn't have a problem that people in the movie percieve him as a godly Jseus figure if the movies wouldn't portray Clark himself as so distant from humanity.

As for Man of Steel: So he "learned" human values not from his adopted parents who raised him, but from a talk with an AI that laid out his destiny?

      2. Pre-Crisis Superman was not Clark Kent as a person. He was Superman with Clark Kent as his disguise.
WFT kind of Snyder cultist logic is that supposed to be!?!? No, Clark didn't feel like he belonged because he didn't understand why he was different. After learning why he is different from the AI Jor-El, he managed to get over the issues he had and returned home to Ma Kent as a happier man ready to move on in his life.
Also WTF is your problem in wanting Clark to reveal his nature by publically using his powers in front of witnesses so he could be exposed and taken away from his parents by the people like the SCP Foundation, GOC or the Serpent's Hand? It's like you don't want him to become Superman, but instead to become the Flashpoint Superman.
Don't have kids. If that is how you still see Pa Kent, then you SOUND like you would be an abusive parent who values your own safety over the safety of your child.
Because Injustice Superman was Superman who gave up on being Clark Kent. That is why you probably see him as more Superman than Clark Kent. The real Superman, like the on from the Vs the Elite movie would have plead the Joker's case to place him into the Death Row and get the capital punishment instead of doing it himself.

And then they were going to make Superman, Clark, slowly turn into a despot. They were going to make Injustice Superman canon. At this point, Grant Morrison, writer of All Star Superman, had walked away from comics for a bit. When they heard this, Grant was like "No", and wrote for Superman to prevent this from happening. Which only makes me worried that there won't always be Grant Morrisons or Joshua Williamsons to come in and save Superman.

The God of War games are a prime example of having a very powerful main character facing off against other antagonists within the same power level but still having to struggle internally and externally throughout the game WHILE having a good narrative story.
In Superman case it's literally easy with the rogues gallery he has, just make him fight other powerful foes or take him to space!

In many cases, he could barely stop a falling plane, doesn't move at lightspeed, and he doesn't start off with heat vision. People call "My Adventures with Superman" Supes weak, but he's usually at that level of power in year 1. Relatability is absolutely a dumb reason to like a character and leads to dumb, narcissistic, close mindedness that dumb, narcissistic, close minded individuals unironically saying they don't think any character who doesn't look like them is automatically bad. Good characters must do at least one of four things right: being dimensional, fascinating, compelling, and believable. Many hit 2 or 3 of those marks, and the rare few can hit all 4 with flying colors. The positive things you mentioned in your defense of relatability are not actually within its domain and are actually properly attributed to those four other guiding stars I mentioned, hence why so often writers are so surprised that in their attempt to make characters more 'relatable' they miss the mark entirely and get so much criticism for it and never realize they were chasing the wrong thing. See Joe Quesadilla and J Michael Kielbasa and their attempt to make Spider-Man 'more relatable' in One More Day and see the whole remade 'for modern audiences' trend for proof.

If you have a dream and can work towards making it come true, then you have managed to do by balancing those two.
BUT, if you cannot do that and end up resorting to force the world into changing instead to match up with your values, LIKE THE ELITE DID, then what you have is a fantasy, not a dream. And with a fantasy, you need to eventually "WAKE THE FUCK UP" from it.
Take For the Man who has Everything as an example, that story had Superman living in a fantasy world where he got to grow up on Krypton and had a family. But because it was fantasy built on a what-if scenario, he eventually had to choose to WAKE UP.

They have turned him into a weakling, and a wimp, easily mind controlled, and of average intelligence at best. Forget that they wanted to make him more human bs. They have made Batman invincible, infallible, and practically invulnerable, even when he’s not wearing an armored suit. The tiniest piece of Kryptonite weakens him as much as a giant boulder. He doesn’t even try to fight it. Lose to Batman. He should have been able to smash that arrogant puts in two seconds flat.

The three characters that take the most away from the modern appeal of Superman are Batman, Captain America, & Goku. DC has pretty much chosen Batman as their champion b/c of his dominance in almost every medium (TV, movies, video games, graphic novels, etc...). Cap has become the ultimate boy scout in the eyes of the general public due to the MCU. And while Dragon Ball started out as the Japanese version of Journey to the West, DBZ pretty much retconned the franchise to be Akira Toriyama's own Superman story. But future adaptations could possibly combine the best aspects of all three and rejuvenate Supes' popularity again.

Back in the early 2010s, Superman was constantly disrespected. Media like Injustice, DCEU/Man Of Steel, and New 52 all reinforced the general audience's notion that Superman is a dull, lame, bland boy scout, which is FAR from the truth. However, it is understandable why people would think that given how DC media treated the character. I really believe we are currently living in an era of a *Superman Renaissance in media* , now more than ever, I believe audiences are beginning to slowly fall in love with the character once again as we are finally being treated Superman content that genuinely understands what makes Superman such an essential character in today's culture. For example, the animated Superman show "My Adventures With Superman", that came out last year is such a breath of fresh air and a wonderful take on Superman/Clark Kent, Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen (my favourite take on Jimmy, in fact). The romance between Lois and Clark is TOO ADORABLE (played amazingly by Jack Quaid and Alice Lee) and wholesome while maintaining an interesting overarching story that feels fresh and unique. The show may not be perfect; some of the villains, like General Lane, Parasite, Dr. Ivo and Mr Myxzptlk, are great; however, others, like Livewire, Silver Banshee, Deathstroke, etc., are kind of boring and a bit of a downgrade from their comic counterparts, plus some of their designs are bland. But you know what, regardless of those criticisms, it just makes me so happy to see Superman get the respect he deserves again. Not just MAWS, but media like *Superman & Lois* , the current *Joshua Willaimson comic run of Superman* and of course *James Gunn's upcoming Superman: Legacy* which so far sounds amazing and sounds like he truly understands the character, stating this is a movie about *"the power of compassion in a cynical world"* which is everything Ive ever wanted to see in a Superman movie. Superman is a phenomenal character to me and my favourite superhero. One of the reasons why Superman works is because everything he stands for will always be timeless and doesn't need to be modernised to fit today's ideals or values; we need to learn to open ourselves up to his ideals and values, and rather than being embarrassed by Superman, we should open ourselves up to him. Fortunately, the character finally has a bright future ahead of him.

Here's my unpopular opinion: Superman's weakness should only be red sun radiation, lead and sensory overload; NOT Kryptonite, magic, psionics or any other crap like that. There I said it. You can't stop me.
Why I say red sun radiation? Because his planet was under a red sun which means no kryptonian superpowers. Lead is obvious since x ray vision is useless to lead because that how radiation works (Gamma radiation is a minor exception but not really an exception) and sensory overload because superhuman senses would still a pain threshold.
You can have red sun radiation be lethal to superman. just have it at higher doses and the symptoms of high enough red sun radiation can be akin to skin cancer or leukemia but these symptoms should be reversible, just place the him around a regular sun like ours.
I hate kryptonite, I am tired of kryptonite, I want it to be obsolete and I am tired of keeping that controversial opinion inside of me. It's just a dumb weakness in general when RED SUN RADIATION IS RIGHT THERE.
Also Martian Manhunter weakness to fire SHOULD ONLY BE PSYCHOLOGICAL AND NOT PHYSICAL!!!
And Captain atom SHOULDN'T blow up every time he exist. Here's an idea for him. Make his entire body made of the dilestel steel that he was made from in the comics but instead of just his skin, you can include every body part and the quantum energy could be akin his blood or any other bodily fluid.

@@VunderGuy I don't know maybe green radioactive rock is stupid and red sun radiation is much better. It's a hard pill to swallow but we all need to do it. It also shows that there's a limit to what radiation superman can absorb without having to do mental gymnastics. Kryptonians can't absorb long wave radiation (anything before light)but everything that shortwave (visible light all the way to gamma ) radiation they can.
