- Let's leave Prague and go explore nature in Bohemian Switzerland - which is actually nowhere near Switzerland! The national park is located in Czechia near the German border. It's only a 2- hour drive from Prague and you can take the train and local bus. You won't believe these incredible views!

Ahoj! I'm Jen, a Native Californian, living in Prague, Czech Republic for the past 9 years with my husband and our rescue dog Tobik. One fateful night, we drank a bottle of wine, threw a dart at the map, and bought one-way tickets to move our entire lives to the center of Europe! Every day we learn something new, about Czech people, Czech culture, Czech history, Czech language and how to battle the Czech bureaucracy. Dream Prague started as a place to share what we learned with other foreigners living here.

Touristic signs colors are explained this way:
RED - long-distance or ridge trails
BLUE - significant trails
GREEN - local trails
YELLOW - short, interconnecting trails
Colors do not really mean the difficulty of the trail.

Nice jab at this New world baby :)

😁

The date 1310 is the oldest record of the legend itself, not when the events it describes supposedly took place.
Yup, the grand-father Czech came way before murder of St. Václav and that happend in 935. So the 1310 makes no sense if you know how it was chronologically.
Příchod praotce Čecha byl popsán už v Kosmově kronice. Takže nejpozději r. 1125.
Oops, someone's gonna fail their citizenship test lol
@@dturtleneck No, mělo by to proběhnout během stěhování národů.
@@Geker3 Czech princes were christened in Regensburg in 845, so definitely before that. 1310 would be indeed ridiculous as that was already toward the end of John of Luxemburg reign after the Přemyslid dynasty had already ended. (These English name translations are just weird :D)
Fun fact: on czech signs, they have kilometers. On slovakian signs, we have time of walking. Because our routes are usually more steep and on some places we have ladders. So 1 km on one place can take 10 minutes and 1 km on another place can take much much longer time.
Máme to tu krásné

As a person born in Děčín and raised by this piece of land called Bohemian Switzerland I have only one think to say...thank you. ❤ well maybe one more, come here again.

To je můj případ :-)
And Slovak !
Yes, or Ukrainians who live here as much time as Jennifer.
Tobik moc krásný a roztomilý pejsek 😍
I understand that for American is the year 1310 "long long ago", but Czechs came here many centuries earlier.
Hájek's chronicle says that the praotec Čech came to Říp in 644
I had to rewatch this twice to make sure I heard right. 1310 is the beginning of Jan Lucemburk's reign. A lot of history and one whole dynasty skipped.
The old Praotec Cech legend is a very interesting one! Especially when you realize just a bit up north in Poland we have a really similar one - except in our version there were three brothers, "praotci": Cech, Lech (Pole) and Rus (Russian I guess). And our legend says the Lech guy saw a nest with eagles and said: This is it for us, guys, we're staying. This was the place today's city of Gniezno is located (also first capital of Poland, and also Gniezno is very similar to Polish "gniazdo" which actually says "nest"). So it seems the Cech guy just went a bit more south, saw Rip and then founded his country, apparently. Not quite sure what happened to Rus, though. Never heard of that guy again, I'm afaid.
I adore that "WE" (also have nature) of Yours in the beginning of the video. :)
and then next 10 seconds she says our great ancestor Czech came to the country in 1310. bet he was kinda surprised by the bloody bohemian kingdom all around him.
@@Pyrochemik007
Let's be real (as well as generous). "Numbers" are bound to be confused at one point or another - it's their spiel - that even the best of brains are not immune against. Genuinely lovable couples like Jen & Honza are not so easily found - and Czechia mastered it (found them, cast a beery spell around them and in the fluffiest foam bond them:). The same goes (without a question) for our dear "Praotec" - no matter the date.
@@iecoie Just no. It is a glaring hole in her knowledge, not only it shows she tries to put a date on a myth, but also proves she has no knowledge of our history, as otherwise she would have known this was a medieval era.
@@Pyrochemik007 Just (try) Yes.. Even though I´m quite sure You´ve never done ANY(!) mistake, righteous Mr. 007 - be a little generous, not assholeous, would Ya?
Tiny bit of simple kindness might doo You giga-bit of good. :)
@@iecoie No. I refuse to downplay such a huge mistake as something you can do by accident. There are several wrong parts intermingled together, which show deeprooted lack of knowledge about the subject. If you really like Jen, then stop doing that, because she needs to pass that test to stay here.
A few years ago when I was visiting Prague I used a local tour company, Northern Hikes. They provided transport, a guide, lunch, a boat ride, and a great experience. It was a nice way to see the same area for someone lacking a car or local transportation skills. The area is beautiful.
"We have nature..." = Jen is one of us...
Lovely! I live in Czech my whole life and use turist markers a lot, but nobody ever told me meaning behind the colors. I just thought that they are all the same. Thanks for enlightening me! 👍🏻
Super Jen! Ještě zajeďte do východních Čech. Navštivte Adršpašské skály. Podívejte se do Nového Města nad Metují, vykoupejte se v Rozkoši, zajeďte do Zoo Dvůr Králové nad Labem atd... Rozhodně nebudete litovat
Do Adršpachu nejlépe během pandemie.
Beautiful place. My friend is running an agency that is focusing mostly on Bohemian Switzerland full day trips for foreign tourists. I myself tried to be a tour guide here once. It was really fun! 😅👍
Funny thing, I live in Děčín, so it takes me a moment to get there... but it's been a few years since I was there...
Very nice video, as usually :) Pity about that kind of big mistake at 0:56. It's not just about some random unimportant date. Czechs as a West Slavic tribe came to Bohemia in the 5th or 6th century, so the legend about Forefather Czech, although probably fictional, must be placed somewhere around this time. Saying that he arrived at the top of the Říp mountain in 1310 (approx. 700 or 600 years later!) is like saying that America wasn't "discovered" in 1492, but in fact only very recently in the 21th century :D
You need to visit South bohemia too!
If you do, come to see a gem of the South Jindřichův Hradec.
I give you guys a tour guide.
PS:We love your channel.

And they can stop in Třeboň also. :)
No ono je to dokonce zakázáno v každém lese. Ale většina lidí na to prdí. IMO pokud máš psa pod kontrolou, tak mi to přijde relativně ok, pokud ale běhá všude okolo, štěká a plaší zvěř, tak už to ok není a ten člověk si říká o zastřelení psa nějakým trigger happy myslivcem.
Hi Jen, great vlog and solid hiking skills! Just a side note: 1310 was when John of Luxembourg took over the Czech throne, as he married Eliska, the last of the Premysl dynasty. The proverbial milk and honey that Forefather Czech observed from Rip turned to gold by then, hence the Golden Age of the Czechs. Downhill from there I suppose, just like your hike!
Ahoj zdravím všechny. Mám takový dojem že v českém Švýcarsku točili filmaři LÉTOPISY NARNIE.
Ano, a spoustu dalsich pohadek a filmu. Nejnovejsi vydany - Cesta za králem trolů ( seveřani - možná Norové) :)
Ano, a příjde mi to ironické že děti utečou z bombardovaného Londýna do Narnie ztvárněné kusem nacisty ovládaného Česka
Imagine; a country so beautiful; close to where i live; and i haven't even been there !

Some people is too honest... Lol !
Jéé tak to je bezvadnýýýý... Bydlím na okraji ČeskoSaského švýcarska :)
No jo, další děčíňák
Hi, Jennifer,
Sir_Mac here, as always!
If forefather Čech climbed the Říp, it was in 7th century. Your mention is about first record in the chronicle about that event. If it truly happened, no-one knows, but as a legend it is lovely.
By the way - Pravčická brána appeared in the very first installment of the Narnia saga. The Pravčická brána will collapse one day. Because of the geological processes and movement, the arch will fall down one day.
"Jetřichovice" - derived from Jetřich (also Dětřich), which is in german Dietrich... So there was a lot of men of that name. Like Petrovice (Petr), Karlovice (Karel), Pavlovice (Pavel) ...
Let me guess - the happiest of you all were Tobik, because he had free space to be and walk. --- Oh, silly Tobik!
It was very nice, Czech Republic has a lot to offer, ... it will be nice if you can do more of videos like this one.
Thank you ....
That has been my cup of tea. Thanks a lot !!!
Thank you for this wonderful report. Our family roots are from Bohemia Switzerland, neat Krasna Lipa.
Dogs are very clever. They would never jump from the rock or fall or go somewhere where they could fall. They have another sense for this. Even if it looks very dangerous sometimes, they really do know what they are doing. Believe me. Even Tobik. :-) And even if he would see the squirrel. :-)
My head knows this, but my heart still fears for my best furry friend.
The Czech countryside is so beautiful, personally I love being in the Giant Mountains, no matter wot time of the year its always beautiful. Had a lovely hike 1 that was only meant to be a short 6km but turned into a 19km hike, had the girlfriend in stitches all the way down from the Elbe string back to our hotel in Spindle. Think I actually crawled up the steps at the end lol
I love Mapy.cz, so many details, turist information, every tourist in Czechia (local or from abroad) should use it when travelling here. I think they also have quite detailed information regarding other countries.
It's amazing app. And you can also download offline map for any country for FREE!

So beautiful. I’m too old and crunchy to hike so please keep it coming. Can’t wait to meet you on the streets Of Prague.
Aww Tobik looks so happy
Forefather Czech definitely did not lead his people up the Říp mountain in 1310! By then some of the houses that you walk past in Prague had been built. He came (and it is only a legend) sometime in the 6th century.
Looks so lovely. And Tobik mastered the video like "I want to fly for a squirrel!" Does anyone make parachutes for dogs?
this is beautiful. im fond of hiking. in slovakia we have a lot of mountains and national parks to visit
My in-laws actually have a house in Chřibská and we often go on beautiful walks through "Pohádkový les".

IIf you want another good climg go to Kašperk. Seriously, love your dedication :). I mean it with Kašperk, it´s a beautiful castle, and Kašperské hory are very picturesque. It´s next to Šumava (or part of it, no idea, some Czechs will surely correct me, Šuamava is also great, massive, you get the feeling how hard it must have been in the old day winters to get from one place to another.. Kašperské hory next to it are suddenly like a fairytale countryside..
I hope you´ve seen Tiské stěny! It´s the best rocky maze here. And the view is epic! And it´s nearby. BTW, you are in location used in NArnia movies (and Tiské stěny were used also).

That was a nice video, short and sweet as they say! So... to balance out the deluge of comments about the date, here's another recommendation for nature: you should check out some places in the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands! You could, for example, go see the Pernštejn castle and then with some luck see ravens in the wild in the surrounding forests. ;-)
I just been there on 1st of July. We had to miss you! :-D
Isn't it awesome to get exited again about interesting Czech places you have been before from an American no less. And I'm here (LA) and you're there. 😁 Coming back soon
Great video Jen! Hope you will receive your Czech citizenship as soon as possible :-).
Have you visited Jested or Prachovske skaly Another great trip 😉😀👍👍
C'mon, I've just been there about a month ago! And yeah, the red one you took is really exhausting. On day one I did the western part of the park with Pravčická brána, which is really easy and I walked nearly 30 klicks. The second day I did the eastern part, possibly the same way you did, and my legs nearly fell off, even though it was much shorter. :-)
Well, if ever any forefather Cech existed, he came in Bohemia around 550 AD... Kingdom of Bohemia was formed 1198AD and Duchy of Bohemia was formed 895AD. Just to correct facts. But dont worry, many natives know less about history than you :-)
I see that you having hard time in the mountains. 🙂 City girl.
Počkej... Čech žil někdy mezi rok 500 a 670!!!!
Ale bylo to asi teprve napsáno kolem 1310

Grandfather Čech led "Czechs" to Říp according to legends before 1530 years. Which is cca year 500 AD. 1310 is the year when the legend was written ;)
I haven't been to Czech-Saxon Switzerland yet but it's on my bucket list :-)
There is surprisingly a lot of nature in Prague itself.
I like Prokopské and Dalejské údolí, but Šárka is nice as well and obora Hvězda and I am sure there is a lot on the other side of the river as well.
Jen, did you travel around the world in one day? You can do so in Southern Bohemia region, where is a pond called "World" (rybník Svět, Třeboň). Nice easy trail, castle to visitand there are several great candyshops in that town. Suitable trip even for your parents. There are spas, beer brewery. And car camp, if you prefer that over a hotel. Though it is just about 2h car trip from Prague.
Nice video, but my favorite places are Drábské Světničky and Studený průchod in Český ráj. And it's really cold, because even in the middle of summer there is still 10 degrees Celsius (50 Fahrenheit)
OMG wait, you went there and you didn't also go to Adrsprach??? The rocks and scenery there is incredible.
@@marysmik9812 it's close to Poland, what do you expect? Anyway, the last few times I've been there, it hasn't been crowded (pre-covid) and it's worth seeing.
@@marysmik9812 LOL if you set your expectations low, then you will always be happy with the reality! I think the biggest problem with the park is just that the trails and stairs are too narrow so even one slow family can slow down the entire hike... one side benefit of the crowds is that you can really show the scale of the rocks - without them, it's hard to explain to people just how enormous they are!
That was a red trail, wasn´t it? Just guessing :)))))) and what a chipper little beast you have :)))))) Glad you enjoyed it Jen...
Yes, our beast is very chipper :)
I admit that my first instinct after you mentioned the year was to pause the video, google to make sure, and then write a comment about it but I see that others have already pointed it out to you :D No big deal though, Czech history is complicated and it's totally fine to make a mistake, I bet that most of the Czech high school students wouldn't know either.
Also, I love that you said "We have" ♥ I would love to see more videos like this in the future! :)
Nice! You finally left for a bit of fresh air. See? It's nice. And Honestly? That is what I want to do if I ever visit the United States. The nature, the national parks, the amazing rock formations.... it's no. 1 on my list why to visit there. The burgers are close no. 2 tho :-D
also Narnia was filmed there :D

Jen, I love you and I love your videos and most of all I love how wonderfully tolerant
You are toward Czech people, even if you probably do not give the same tolerance back.
I live in San Diego for last 25 years, but I still remember, that the Czech / Rip person died 661.
So - it all happened ( if it happened) 799 years before you said.
I gues 660 and 1310 looks really the same from LA parapet I’ve.
It was a long time ago ….:)
nice video, to be precise, the ancestor of Bohemia is a mythical character like Jára Cimrman 😉
Jen, I love the fact that when you speak about the Czech Republic, you say "we". :-)
How is your preparation for the citizenship test going?
Hi Jen, on your journey to the Bohemian Switzerland you actually passed two other hidden gems of nature: Krušné hory (Ore mountains) and České Středohoří (Central Bohemian Highlands). Both are protected natural areas, have a good system of marked tourist trails you described, AND are mostly unknown to the most Czech and foreign tourists!
What about to visit High tatras, for example Rysy ? There you can make a video and interview about how interesting or annoying is staying in the mountain queue. :D
1310 a praotec Čech?!
What, praotec Čech in 1310?! That is year when Jan Lucemburský becamed a czech king. Praotec Čech is part of or mythology and she should came during Migration period. He should came during 6th or 7th century.
