- Packing gear for my canoe trips looks quite a bit different from my backpacking trips. In this video I give a rundown of the gear and equipment I bring when paddling. Oh yes! I’m from Connecticut. So there’s the Housatonic River, Connecticut River, the Sound and a million lakes not to mention short drive to MA, NH ME and VT. I’ve never backpacked or canoed overnight. I’ve been camping my whole life, literally. I think I’ve got to go to the gym to get strong enough to carry a pack or do a portage.
That’s awesome! Yea great canoeing options all around you it sounds like. I’d like to get back up to the northeast, it’s so pretty!

@@Beyond_The_Treeline I would not say a lot.. Maybe once a year. I do love to cycle, but I have had some bad luck bikepacking to the point where I don't find it super fun.

A true portage pack is ideal for canoe tripping - those big waterproof packs seem good on the surface, but the reality is that they'll fail after a few trips. Out of concern people use dry bags within even if you have a big dry backpack. So you may as well save weight, and be more sustainable with a well-built portage pack, using smallee dry bags within that cost WAY less to replace if they go bad (but will likely last forever as it is because they're protected within the portage pack).
Good advice! Thanks for sharing. I’ve done the dry bags inside the portage pack for years now and it works great. I’ve seen a lot of guys run the NRS Bill’s Bag as well and I actually just got one to try out to see how it compares to using the traditional portage pack. I’ve used NRS dry bags for years and they haven’t failed me yet, so I’m curious to see how this one does since it has the backpack like a portage pack which makes it a lot easier for portaging. You’re totally right about the weight though! My portage pack weighs a fraction of the NRS dry bag. I see the dry bag being extra insurance for river trips, but outside that I have no intensions of getting rid of my trusty portage pack :)
I finally added those exact booties to my kayaking regime this season and it was the best thing ever! My feet get cold AND I finally got tired of getting sand and pebbles in my tevas turning my skinny feet into hamburger.
I was wondering if you ever considered a twig stove with a trangia for tired or rain days?

They are great right! I’ve tried a couple of things and nothing keeps my feet as warm as those. I pair them with some neoprene socks and I’m golden :)
You know, a few people have recommended twig stoves to me now and I am really curious to try one out. They seem really cool. Do you have a particular one you’d recommend? I love the idea of one!

@@Beyond_The_Treeline i like the stainless steel emberlit stove for boat trips and the firebox nano for backpacking trips. The emberlit is 12 ounces with storage bag and the nano is 9 with the metal storage box which doubles as your ash pan. They’re both great great stoves. The nano accommodates the trangia a little better. Pair the nano/trangia with a diy windscreen out of an aluminum one time use roasting pan and it ends up being a pretty lightweight setup. The nano is a little finicky and the emberlit is wicked stable and just eager to burn. I’d say pick up both and see what you think.

@Beyond_The_Treeline Nathan - what are the make/model of the black pants that you wore with the NRS boots in your Boundary Waters doc? They look like they had some kind of knee reinforcement and paired well with the boots…
The brand is Fjallraven. I think I was mostly using the men’s leggings in that video. Since they dry so fast they make for great paddling pants. But I’ve also really enjoyed just wearing their Vida Pro pants as well. Super durable and they all have those extra reinforcement on the knees which is also great for paddling. The pants are kinda expensive, but they have a lifetime warranty and are just super rugged and well built. And if you wait around for a deal you can usually get a pretty good sale. Check them out for sure if you’re looking for a great pair of outdoor pants! I’ve loved wearing them and they are super comfortable for how rugged they are.
