- In this video, I will be going through all the gear I am taking with me on my upcoming canoe trip in Scotland. In just a few days time I am taking part in a 60 mile canoe paddle across Scotland from Fort William on the west coast to Inverness on the east coast with several other keen outdoorsmen, in aid of the Alzeimer's Society.
The trip will take us around five days to complete and we will be camping along the way, taking all of our gear, food and supplies with us.
I am not going to attempt to list links for all of the gear I show in the video - there is simply too much. However I will put links below to some of the companies that have helped out with the trip in one way or another and for that, we are hugely grateful.
I hope you enjoy the video,
Thanks for watching!

Simon, We need more people like you in this messed up world...have a blast on your memory making canoe trip up in Scotland 👍🏻👌🏻👍🏻
Agreed too many "influencers" and negative attitudes. It's refreshing to watch someone genuinely passionate about their lifestyle/hobby.
Thanks mate!! 😁
this is why it's Simon "a bloke" in the woods not a self appointed "expert" we are watching him enjoying himself and learning what he learns along the way
Great to see Simon! My late Dad who died of Alzheimer’s aged 56 would be proud of you lads - and jealous! 😊👍🏻
Thanks Steven! Your Dad was plucked from this world way too soon - so sorry mate.
Piece of advise from a career paramedic, take the plastic off of that tourniquet. They are a pain to open and you don’t want to be fumbling with it when you really need. If it were me I’d have it on my hip. May seem excessive but uncontrolled life threatening bleeding is really a true emergency! Thanks for the info. I’m researching all these videos trying to get started here. Stay safe brother.
I hope your trip rocked! I will say that this is probably the most "stuff" I've seen someone bring on a canoe trip.. I'm thinking you might be able to eliminate a lot of redundancies in your kit, like the cooking utensils and lighting. But, if it works for you, more power to you mate. Love seeing others enjoy the outdoors!!
Hit the like button before it had even started because you never fail to impress and entertain! Thoroughly enjoyable as always and I yet again lived vicariously through your video
If you like before watching he'll get lazy.
He has to work for my likes 😁
Thanks Ashley and Nicola!
@@simonablokeinthewoods Ok, ok, I liked, I liked 😊
"we are gonna need a bigger boat" springs to mind.....all bases covered and some; the peril of open boating is plenty of space! Looking forward to following the journey. Cheers!
Hi Simon ,The only piece of kit that you did,nt mention is a Tick removal tool. They are out in full force this year and if you are camping in a field where their have been sheep or deer you will stand a good chance of picking some of them up. Good luck with the trip I will be following your journey.
I am never without one.
There is one in my FAK, it’s always in there, usually for Maggie more than for me. 😁👍
Whats wrong with fingers and slow steady pull. Never had head break off. That's for me or my dogs.
I've always had good luck removing those bastards with a cotton ball soaked in rubbing alcohol. They back out all by themselves and it sanitize the area.
Can’t wait to watch this one! Thanks for posting Simon…
I've never seen anyone this prepared and organized. I usually figure out what I need to bring half way through my trip!
Put your obulb in lock out mode. Press and hold the on button for three to five seconds. Once done the light will not stay on if the button is accidentally pressed. Long press again to remove the lock out.
Thanks Ross! Now done it!! 👍👍
Sorry I also posted this answer but didn't see your comment. Have a great trip.
That duct tape has another use you didn't mention. While putting his rented gray tux on for our sister's wedding my brother discovered that the previous person had burned a cigarette hole in the lapel. My dad sent someone out to the car for his emergency roll of 3M silver duct tape. It matched PERFECTLY!
Thanks again for supporting such a good cause Simon.
So looking forward to this one. Looking forward as to who will be going with you. And for a great cause from you all. Well done all. Midge nets are a must in the wrong conditions. I pity any that do not bring them! But you can get beer anywhere along the route!
Good to know Paul - cheers, my beer quota had to be cut to save space! 🍻
Simon, "You forgot the kitchen sink! " ;) I am looking forward to when you post the trip in a few weeks.
Dude! Not 2 minutes into your video I learned something. Sign me up. I’m a subscriber!
Awesome to see a piece of norway in you’re food bag👍 Stabburet Makrell for the win!🎉
The fact you tore it all down just to put it all back together in order to show what you're working with and why just goes to show what a top notch bloke you are. Many thanks for what you share with the world, Simon!
Have a good trip in Scotland , I can’t wait for the video .
For anyone new to canoeing, I highly recommend Bill Mason’s Path of the Paddle series of films done for the National Film Board of Canada. Nearly 50 years old now but still the best in my opinion. Created by a great film maker and Master paddler.
👍🇨🇦👍
Waterwalker, the documentary is a brilliant watch. How to live as a true adventurer.
Man, I've never seen such a thorough and complete preparation for a journey as well structured as this one. Congratulations from 🇧🇷:-)
Hi simon, I love you and all the other guys for getting involved, participating and raising money and awareness for such a important cause😊 I hope you all have a fantastic time, and make some great memories on this amazing adventure. Good luck and have a safe journey 👍
Thank you Heather! 😁
Hi Simon, I grew up not far from where you are based. My Parents are local to you but I'm in Dorset, so only get up to Norfolk occasionally. My dear old Dad has Alzheimers and its a real struggle with my mum being his primary carer (They're both in their early eighties). Thank you for all you are doing with the trip. I'll get out sometime soon for a camp. Thank you.
I'm not a canoeist. I'm an off the grid trailer towing motorcyclist. But this video was just so awesome and ticked all my boxes. Loved the pragmatic logistics and how it all made so much sense. I got a lot of tips on storage and general logistics. Was just so satisfying on so many levels to watch... Thanks very much from Tasmania Australia
Quite a bit of kit. "Simon, a bloke on expedition"
2 stoves but only one pair of pants....
@@Trenchfoot1 can wash pants in a river but can’t smelt an iron pot 👀😂
I'm sure I saw an anvil and bellows in there somewhere...
Native bearers can be found in these wild places but communication with tham can be challenging!
Folks, my comment wasn't meant to pick on Simon for what he's taking. It was only an observation that it takes quite a bit of gear to go on a canoe expedition like this. In fact, a lot of his kit is specifically _because_ it's a canoe. He has to take a fair amount of additional stuff just to ensure he can properly manage it (sails, trolley, tools, dry bags & barrels, etc.). Take away that and his kit isn't so bad for 5 days. For example, it's reasonable to go into the woods for just 5 days with a single pair of pants. Sure, he has quite a bit for cooking, but we all know he likes to eat well around the fire & we can't fault him for that.
Simon the best thing to keep the midges away, is a few drops of citronella mixed with water in a spray bottle. Cheap and natural. Have fun, great cause. 👍🏿👍🏼👍🏿👍🏼
Simon, the man with the bags
I’ve been looking forward to this video…..bring it on Simon…..👍🏻🍻
That canoe is a masterpiece!
Awesome organizing as always, Simon! I am anxious to see the trip videos now.♥️ Have a wonderful, wonderful time.🛶
a rather fascinating mix of purposefully lightweight choices and weight reducing methods paired with unneccessary loads and heavy items.
Brilliant video, many thanks Simon. Wishing you an awesome trip. Come back safe to us. x
Simon, I really appreciate this. It is always so informative and accurately described. I really enjoyed watching everyone's channels from the canoe trip and I hope your nice canoe could be repaired. I look forward to the sequel!
Have a WONDERFUL and safe trip Simon!!!!
I absolutely love these gear load out videos. Can't wait for the video of the trip. Good luck and stay safe Simon
Wow, every video gets more exciting with this trip to Scotland.
Simon, YT suggested this video to me even though I saw it the first time round and I remember that It was a great trip to watch. I had to smile when you brought your repair kit out and explained that the duct tape could be used to repair your canoe if the hull got damaged, prophetic words indeed 😃
Simon, God Bless you and your friends for this taking on this great trip for this great cause!!!
You have more bags and pouches than ive ever seen. Well done.
Good luck on your Scotland trip have a great time.
During this crappy COVID time, it has been a blessing to experience your positive videos. Thanks for all you do.
This was really excellent, thanks Simon!

Thanks Simon!!! I consider myself an experienced canoe trekker... Even so - your presentation is awesome food-for-thought. Some great ideas. Stay safe!
Have a great time Simon, you are well prepared and for such a good cause, you’ve inspired me to create my own barrel (Harold) full of camp and bushcraft and cooking gear all of which I’ve made wax pouches for. You’re such an inspiration. Enjoy Scotland, all the best, Camilla xxx
That was superb Simon. As always, expertly made. Again you make me aware of more kit I need! Just don’t tell my wife! Really hope the trip goes well. Good luck to you all. Stay safe. All the best. Paul.
Truly well prepaired and organized, as usual. Have a nice trip Simon.

Really looking forward to this series.
Nice video. Thanks you for all those experiences shared with us.
I hiked Lejog in 2011 and made sure I went fort William to Inverness along the Caledonian canal. Stunning scenery and I recall a canoeist on the first loch (loch lochy?) Who looked the most relaxed person on planet earth. I was a little jealous but also blessed I'd been the guy able to wave 'hi' to him.
Enjoy the trip!
Well kitted out Simon, I did this trip back in 2015, was fabulous. Don’t forget a flask of single malt! Enjoy!
Wow! It just dawned on me how epic this trip is gonna be! Good luck with fund, the midges and the whole trip and camera gear. Can't wait to see it all! .. don't forget your Oh Boy!

Excellent I loved that, I can't imagine there's no one better prepared than you, I can guess there will be some envious colleagues eyeing up your Canoe trolley if everyone else is taking that much kit. Really looking forward to any updates 👍🙂
Looking forward to the trip videos. As always a well thought out kit.
