Traveling to Oregon in January

- Heading west to Oregon in the winter means you have to stay flexible for both the timing and the route. Instead of I-80 and I-84 through Utah, Idaho and into Oregon, we ended up going way south into California and up the coast to Oregon. But it was a spectacular trip.

I've done the run from Salt Lake to Portland many times in summer and winter. Emigrant hill is really fun on a motorcycle. Last time I did the trip, I84 through the Blue Mountains was closed due to trucks wrecking in the snow. Changed plans to go south on I5 then back home on I40 through Flagstaff. Best part of the trip was stopping in Winslow Arizona,such a fine site to see.
It's amazing to see you travel right past my house. I'm in California City CA off the 58. Small world we live in.

I live in CA and we have family throughout OR so we have made many drives up there, in all sorts of weather, but mostly a lot of Oregon rain I think. :) The coast drives are always good... Wow! What a wonderful, special quilt! That's so incredibly heartwarming that your mom got to see it finished.
The last time i got to visit the west was when i was 12 and my mom drove the family to go see my older sister stationed at a naval base in Monterrey, then to Oregon to see my aunt. I remember the total wonder of going through the relatively parched, but beautiful landscape for so very long before visiting the rainforest up there. What a contrast! We're lucky to live in such a beautiful, ecologically diverse country.

More than 20 years ago I took a trip from Texas to California via New Mexico, Colorado, Utah and Nevada about the same time of year, via much of the same route as you took. (Though We went into Utah by going west from Cańon City in CO).

That is just a lovely video and it was really nice to see your mum's face when you gave her back the quilt. I have spent quite a bit of time on Hw101 cycling in Oregon as that is where my ex wife was from and it is just an amazing place to visit!
