Going with what the wife likes. And buying her lunch? You are truly a wise and kindly man.
Sir, I think I speak for the majority of viewers on this channel when I say we’ll watch your content no matter where you post. Whatever is most beneficial, cost/time-effective for you, I say go for it.
Variety is the spice of life. I’d love to see more woodworking, leatherworking, or other hand craft videos.
Another excellent video sir.
I feel like the reality is a blacksmith is rarely ever just a blacksmith these days. I sub to blackbear forge for the blacksmithing content, but I enjoy woodworking too, leather work, outdoors videos, cabin building. I wouldn't mind seeing more of that content there personally.
I think you're right. I think your Black Bear Forge watchers will enjoy seeing the cabin project. Personally, I would love to relocate an old log cabin to use as a shop. We all have diverse interests whether we want to admit it or not. Keep up the good work!
I saw those 2 Muzzleloaders on your wall. When I 1st started blacksmithing, about 45 years ago; I started making replacement parts to repair flintlocks and caplocks. Bending, forging, filing, drilling, boring, heat treating, case hardening, tempering to make or repair parts for the black powder crowd. Making of main and frizzen springs was a challenge. Making a non sparking frizzen; spark! Eventually I met up with a guy that was a welder that part of his apprenticeship was blacksmithing at a shipyard. I learned a lot from him‼️ I really enjoy all your videos, no matter what the subject or content is.
"Janet likes the medium grey, so were going medium grey"
You won't be taking a misstep with mixing it up a bit, John. I really enjoy just about everything Maximus Ironthumper posts and Cabin building would be great to watch. Thanks for your brilliant work to date from Oz!
Bring it on John! I watch them all. Hand crafting anything is interesting and should be celebrated.
right on
John you are a great presenter. I watch all your channels and enjoy your content. Thank you for sharing.
Your channel isn't to bad either Randy!! LOL I need to get back to it and Stan's a bit more. I missed out on the bash this year. Hopefully I get there next year.
@@aaronkokesch3593 Thanks
Arron. The Bash was fun this year.
Here's an idea John, When you make hardware for the cabin, show us the making and where it's going to go in the cabin. Also, when you do something like a spring pole lathe, forge the cutting tools and gouges as they would've back in the day when spring pole lathes were on almost every homestead like in Colonial America.
Yes any craftsmanship is welcome.
Good idea to expand the BBF channel to include the cabin build and other things around your place. Another craftsman I watch is Dave Engles (channel is Engles Coach Shop) who builds/rebuilds horse-drawn vehicles. He recently started adding his after work projects, which he posts on Tuesdays with his coach shop videos continuing to be posted on Fridays. His after work projects are typically what he does on his properties. He has some off-grid ranch land and some rentals in town that he works on. That content ranges from things like fencing, water system installation, working on his old tractor for the ranch and he's also renovating a 100yr old brick hotel that was later converted into 1bdrm apts (that project has become something of an archaeological dig). This additional content adds to the value of his channel, not detracting from it. Maybe you could add a day when you post non-forge videos or maybe do every other week.
WRT shorts, I don't like the format so rarely watch them in general. (I guess I'm not so flighty as to get bored with a video if it's over a few minutes long.) In addition to not liking the auto play where it goes to the next short (that I may or may not be interested in), what I really find frustrating with them is that I can't rewind a few seconds if I miss something that was said or want to see something I glimpsed, with the only option of being to rewatch the video from the beginning so I try to avoid them.
Looking forward to whatever you decide to do!
Spring pole lathe sounds fun..
John, you inspired me to upgrade our old cabin. It's similar to yours, except built from 18th century shipwreck wood. It's very sturdy, but drafty. So dog rolls beside (Brit-speak for sausage rolls) and a mug of hot coffee, I've inserted thin strips of very hard Greenheart, the type used in building breakwater groynes. Greenheart comes from Venezuela, but in 'raw' form is poisonous if one gets a splinter, so it's best carefully cut when raw, then left to harden in the sun. Our cabin should last at least 100 years. I loved your video, appreciating how much prep went into the filming of it. All the best from Wendi 🌻
John I've been finishing log cabins for year. Lots of work takes lot of love. Don't give up on it. It's going to be worth it. Thanks God bless
We're somewhat kindred spirits. Some folks are laser focused on one thing, and they are wonderful to watch, but I've always been more practical. Learn more skills and develop them so they are useful. Getting really good at some, but being satisfied with doing acceptable work on most. Lifetime learning is a fulfilling pursuit.
👍👍👍👍I personally prefer all making on one channel, my feed is full and people get lost in my feed when everybody has multiple channels
I’m definitely in the camp of ‘If John makes a video, I watch it.” camp. All the stuff you talked about filming is interesting to me, so do as you please!
I appreciate that!
I think that you know your audience.
You could knock out a chinking trowel in the forge then there would genuinely be a reason to show the cabin work on the BB channel.
Sir I don't care what you put out on any channel you have I will always be there to watch it cause I learn so much from them
This hay drying barn is getting a second more worthy life. Its not a northern swedish one though. I would be interested to know where it stems from. Elsewise I don't care where you show your work. I like creation being worked on and your channels fit the bill perfectly.
Black bear forge, John Switzer, frankly I don’t care what channel or what subject I just enjoy your personality and craftsmanship and as long as Iv got time I try to watch all your videos.
You are one of the few that I enjoy and watch all of your content.
Will watch what you do wherever you post it!!
we knew you did other crafts, especially woodwork. would love to see you expand on all the things you mentioned. look forward to seeing them. thanks for sharing.
I do some wood working and turning also I believe they can go well with black smithing also.
Can't wait to see cabin building I live in a log cabin in WV which needs some work especially with clinking & some log replacement
I like and do all the crafts you mentioned so will be very happy to continue watching your channel, I also watch Anne of all trades and Essential Craftsman.
Wonderful
Do a long video one of these days on the current state of the cabin... Background on it...
John I have to say that I agree with what you said and I am really looking forward to getting to see you do with your cabin honestly I would like to watch that on any of the channels you have good luck with everything my friend
Thanks 👍
Wow, your video editing has come a LONG way from watching you on a speckly video making a hammer without a striker :D (Still one of my favs of your back catalogue).
I'm already subscribed to your forge channel and now I'm subscribed to this channel as well. I really enjoy the work you do in this cabin and will follow where you post. Good luck in your projects!
Thanks for the sub!
Hi John you can make steel work for the cabin
John anything you want to post on any of your channels I will watch it, I enjoy all of it. And I would like to see the green woodworking and stone work. Thanks for bringing us this wonderful work you do.
Hoping to see you at HandWerks September 1-2. Watching you drive and carry home food was great fun. Relaxing after bringing home groceries myself and shoving it all in freezer.
We are looking forward to it. I just hope I can get enough stuff made to be worth the trip.
It definitely doesn't matter what you end up producing. For my part, it's always
refreshing good and worthwhile Diversity makes life a whole lot more interesting. Thanks Take Care Enjoy
Ps: I'll be watching 👍
As always I really appreciate the transparency John. I've started to avoid shorts all together, since the vast majority of them are useless and exhibit all of the worst tendencies of the wider CZcams culture. I do actually enjoy yours (since I love blacksmithing) but I happen to think that separating your main channel from the shorts stuff is a good move. It may make sense for you to keep producing shorts for BBF2, that's up to you, but in my opinion that channel seems like its mostly a distraction and confusion on top of the two others so I wouldn't be upset if you abandoned it formally. Seems like that would allow you to focus your time and attention on the main channel and the vlog channel. Three may be a crowd. In terms of branching out into some non-blacksmithing content, I think that would be great. Every blacksmith has other projects too, and at the end of the day we all love seeing projects worked on regardless of what their subject is.
If you post it I well watch it John . Cheers. (:
I'll be watching no matter where you post
I have two channels that don't pay either :) Can relate.
Keep up the good work! Do what you need to do! I will be here for you no matter what !
Love all your videos. Maybe look at the route Torbjorn does many of his videos with a start to finish project that includes wood working, blacksmithing and leather work? Seeing a complete forged tool or furniture piece with wood and leather could be something.
I like that idea and really enjoy Torbjorn's video style. But it seems to take much longer to get a video completed in that style. One day when I feel like I can get by with just one video per month I will likely move that direction more.
I think that's a great idea.
Can't wait to see the cabin series and the expanded craft selection. Though I'm interested in broadening my skillset, I haven't yet considered stonework, but perhaps I'll find a spark of inspiration here.
I find all of your videos interesting and i'm subscribed to both channels, so i watch them all!
Awesome! Thank you!
All good updates, I’m really not a fan of the “#shorts” things. Insta-subscribed to both the channels you mentioned, they sound exactly like creators I’ll enjoy watching and learning from, thanks!
Love it all bud
7:11 great that videos on BBF are coming back, love them!!! But I have a comment on the horrible plastic clinking applied on the cabinet... ugly, not sustainable.. like abusing this fantastic old wooden structure. Apply a authentic method to it, is 100 times better prettier and costs a lot less. Looking forward to the videos of BBF
To go along with at least one other comment that I seen, if there is a tool your using on the cabin you could make the tool and then show the use, even if you might not need a new tool.
While I really like that idea, the goal is to spend time working on the cabin and that means staying out of the blacksmith shop unless I have to get something specific done, like product to sell at event late this summer.
Not gonna lie, after having a spring pole lathe and a 3hp vfd driven powered lathe, I used the pole lathe for a month now it collects dust.
The gray stuff you put behind the chinking material is that official thinking foam I’ve only ever seen them use like the blue board that stuff you had looks a lot quicker and easier🤷♂️👍?
That is backer rod and it comes in different sizes for filling the gaps and providing insulation prior to chinking or caulking. Blueboard isn't recommended because it can off gas and cause the chinking material to blister.
@@JohnSwitzer thank you for answering my question I really appreciate all your videos. You are a good speaker on videos.
Hi John that was a fun intro. Thanks for explaining things. I’ve watched a lot of your videos over the past three year and still do. Start blacksmithing. I was wondering when you moved to Colorado? I thought you lived in NM? Did you move?
We've never lived in New Mexico, but we do enjoy going down on a fairly regular basis. I've been in Colorado for about 50 years
Thank for clarifying that John! Some how I got the wrong idea! There’s also a few Blackbear Forges.
for sure us over on the BBF channel are in the same situation as you, we do work on our own homes and cars too, its just the way craft people are built so yeah, it will be great to see it on the other channel too, also thats going to help you out at the same time
not sure if you done it yet but one thing you could do on here is a raw un edited show of your forge stuff, some wont want to watch long vids like that but some might
not sure what goes into your patreon stuff as i'm retired now and with several, many several great youtube channels it would get a bit much for me so i don't P any of them, the raw un edited may well be something you already do there.
always interested in stuff you do,
John, love to see a forged trowel to work in the chinking... thanks for the content.
What's the manufacturer of the chinking, and where do you get it? don't have a use for it now, but would like to have it in my memory just in case.
We're using Permachink and will by directly from them. For the exterior it should be about 6 5 gallon buckets and we'll use a bulk load caulking gun to apply it. store.permachink.com/p-51-perma-chink.aspx
In the beginning of the video as you were talking about the channels, my 1st thought was ok so can you cross post? Like the same video to both channels? Then you kinda explained away that with both channels sharing the base viewership. LoL crazy Crawford always overthink everything n under doing everything.
Blessings aboundant brother
Crawford out 🙏🔥⚒️🧙🏼♂️
CZcams doesn't seem to prevent it, but it would set up a situation where I'm competing against myself.
Hope you enjoyed your lunch.
A lot of viewership for channels is purely the likeability of the people making the content. You John, have proven you are likeable! Maybe you in a bikini now and then may help!! LOL
You need some volunteers to come out and help you from all 50 states have like the old army says of a farm raising
Sounds like a logistical nightmare. 😜
I love you way have your water I remember when they put it in I thought I wouldn't work but it did because of the droughts I wish I had that here City waters anywhere from 70 to $80 a month ridiculous price to pay for water course everything's going up I've always liked the house you built it was ideal You've been there for quite some time I tell you I've always liked camping out that way out in the parks
I was over in Ohio I'm watching the Amish people took them two days to put on barn up it was amazing and here it takes us anywhere from a year to 3 years to put up a building
Are you the guy who pretended to be a cop and put handcuffs on that Vietnamese lady?
You look just like the guy.
You’ve got his voice.
You even have his name.
His exact name.
It’s really weird…hope the sausage sandwich was good!
I built a cabin here in Knoxville Tennessee I used a wet paintbrush to smooth out the perma-chink worked really well
I'll have top give that a try
