These Melbourne lads were one of the most stylistic acts in Australia during the early 1980s. Though they disbanded in 1991, their music lives on as one of the iconic music of the wonderful 80s.

I was transferred to work in Newcastle in 1981. Stranger in a new town but made some great friends and one night we all decided to go see a new band playing at the Lake Macquarie Yacht Club. They were called Mondo Rock. Can't believe how good that was. What a fantastic night. What a fantastic band. Loved them ever since and when I hear these now OLD tracks it takes me back to those memories. ❤

Mondo Rock are seriously underrated, they were as influential in the early 1980s Aussie music scene as INXS, Cold Chisel, Icehouse etc. Ron Wilson is a song writing genius. I was a big fan of those guys as a teen in the 1980s and I still come back to hits like this every now and then.

Me too, except we went to the golf course to get balls from the creeks and dams which paid for all the Winnie Reds we could smoke cause selling smokes to kids was all cool at the local corner store back then. All while playing the pinnies and space invaders , every arvo after school. Anyone under 40 has absolutely no idea what was the norm, everyone got bullied , nobody drew the attention of the local cops , cause they'd flog ya when you stepped out of line, if you got a smack in the head you probably deserved it but what happened before cctv and mobiles , was just bliss and people knew how to keep their mouths shut and were real friends that even now talk every week and just laugh at todays PC crap that people call a life. haha

@@davidrichardson9146 haaa, winnie reds. How Australian is that mate?🤣
I'm not a smoker, but yeah when I was a young bloke I did naughty things with me mates like trying smoking such as Winfield reds, Alpine, PJs. We even rolled our own out of bamboo type stuff with dry grass 😊. Also had an old XP falcon we used to bush bash given to me by dad as it ran out of rego and wasnt renewed, could barely see over the dash. But we learned driving skills and the responsibility of getting under the hood. I remember a common occurrence was the linkage (on the tranny, 3 on the tree) would pop out and we'd have to stop, pop the hood and put it back in (we were 13). The local cops knew and visited us one day and just told us to be careful and have fun. Kids these days wouldn't have a clue.

The lyrics is and the music never grows old, just a timeless period in our lives. The Artist gave us something to remain young in our minds, even when the mirror reminds people otherwise, except myself of course. Just can’t understand why that gorgeous young thing who looks very familiar walks right past me. I’m sure it was the girl in Frankston who said, come surfer boy take my hand, let’s go down to the sand. Surely I haven’t changed that much in 60 years? And gave Ross the idea for the song later in 5he 70s. Perhaps, it’s the haircut being too short. Wow, what a dream, her granddaughter sure looked like her.

It was indeed about Nuclear war or the end of the world due to one and the nuclear fallout that followed. I heard them *(Mondo rock) on a radio interview 2 nights ago stating that very fact. I forgot the writers name but he said he had a nightmare he was on a flight and he looked out the window and saw a mushroom cloud out over melbourne then he looked to his right and same thing over sydney. Agree 100%. Amazing how different in style this is compared to their 1983 hit Come Said The Boy.

Man, the 80s were good. I listen to this and I'm reminded of musicianship, lyrics crafted with the the passion that creates the poetry and humans with the real ability to sing without autotune.. Seriously good to listen to Mondo Rock, it doesnt get old it just sounds better every time I hear it.

    Gonna write you a letter
    Gonna mail it today-ay
    So you won't escape from
    These things I wanna say
I wanna thank you for the privilege
I-I wanna thank you for the pain
I'll be handin' you the ashes
I wanna thank you for-or the game
    We stood on the balcony
    And we watched it toge-ether
We were modern men and women
    Who changed like the wea-eather
We were one day goin' hot, the next day goin' cold
One day growin' restless, the next day growin' old
Waiting for the countdown, in the summer of '81
Sign up or go underground, in the summer of '81
    There's no time for leather
And there's no one on the floor
So I'll pretend that we're together
    I don't want to go alone, no-no-no-no
    We stood on the balcony
    And we watched it toge-ether
We were modern men and women
    Who changed like the wea-eather
We were one day goin' hot, the next day goin' cold
One day growin' restless, the next day growin' old
Waiting for the countdown, in the summer of '81
Sign up or go underground, in the summer of '81
We were waiting for the countdown, in the summer of '81
Sign up or go underground, in the summer of '81
Well we were waiting for the countdown in the summer of '81
Waiting for the countdown in the summer of '81

My mate Max saw these fellas at the Middle hotel, FTG, in the summer of 1982.
So many great Australian bands from this era! What happened? In Victoria, probably the Labor party and no investment in public schools. Art is dead in Australia now.
