  • I put a lot of effort and invested a lot of money in this restoration. I hope you will enjoy how I restored this Tonka Ser-Vi-Car toy from 1960.
    Story of this restoration:
So, I saw this toy by chance on EBay, I noticed that it costs a lot and I wondered why: the answer I found is that there are few toys like this for sale. So,I negotiated with the seller from $99 to $65, he liked the idea of restoring it, so he sent it to me. The toy came to me, I inspected it and deduced that it needed many original parts to restore it professionally. Some parts cost a lot of money, others I was able to creating like the original ones.
I felt that by investing a lot of money in this restoration project, I have to offer you a plus of quality and also to move to a new level of restoration. So I decided to paint with powder (powder coating) , although I have never done it before in my life. This happened somewhere in the middle of the video and after many attempts and tests, I saw the results : they were amazing. I have since known that this restoration video will be wonderful.
As I said, in order for this restoration to be done as professionally as possible, I had to buy some parts. But the biggest challenge of this restoration project was when I realized that I can't find to buy the fork of this Tonka toy. It was the moment when I decided it was the time to document what it looked like and start creating a new one. Once again, the result was wonderful.
The total investment for this restoration reached $ 115, in this calculation we did not add the cost of delivery because this is relative depending on the area of each. But even these shipments were expensive because most of the spare parts, I ordered from the US to Romania.
I like to restore old and rusty items but especially I like to restore Tonka toys. They have a great history behind these toys and many of the viewers will have memories. I hope you like this restoration video like I do and enjoy every moment of the video. I say this because in the process of creating videos for you, every time I try to make the restoration process as easy to understand as possible and the narrative thread of the restoration to be easy to follow.
Last but not least, I would like to thank Tifoo.de for sending me a good quality nickel and nickel solution. After restoring the rear axle of the toy and creating the new fork, I had to apply a layer of nickel to protect them from rust. Their products have helped me a lot in this restoration. That's why I will leave here a link with their online store:
    www.tifoo.de/en-uk
You will find many solutions in case you want to do some restorations at home. The method to buy is easy, they are professionals in delivering and packaging the package, but all you need to know is that the only way you can buy nickel solution is if you have a company license. Otherwise, the other products have no restrictions in ordering.
I have no other sponsors for tools and equipment so if you are interested in something specific, write me a comment and I will answer you, as I answer the restorations posted a year ago. Also, if you want to restore Tonka, or restore anything else and do not know where to start, or a certain process, I am at your disposal with any information you need to complete the restoration.
Lastly, I want to wish you a pleasant viewing, I hope you like this restoration video and I will tell you only one thing: the next restoration will take your mind. Stay tuned and Cheers !!! .... and don't forget to subscribe !

      2 things:
      1) I would like you to consider restoring more wood instead of throwing it away and making a new one because wood is almost always fully restorable, thanks. (Nothing to do with this video but asking in general.)
      2) How much is the Tonka worth now? Is it a viable activity?

I appreciate that you mention the details of your restoration, like products used, sandpaper grit, etc. I used to try to watch my dad do these kinds of things in his workshop, only to be told that it's not the place for girls. "Where's your mother?" I'd often hear. Thankfully (hopefully?) times have changed. It's like I'm watching all the things I missed with Dad!😁

This could be something that you two could seriously bond over. When children have a natural interest, please encourage it. More often than not, it will be something they will enjoy all their lives.
Later in life, my dad did come around and apologize for not taking my interests more seriously. But it was the 60s and that was how things were. And we did refinish some furniture together in the early 2000s. Things are much different today, of course. Lucky her...and lucky you.

My uncle had a big Tonka dumper truck when he was a kid and when I was about 5 my grandad renovated it and painted it yellow, I think it was originally black? He gave it to me for my birthday and I absolutely loved it. It was all metal and had a cool lever to release the tipper mechanism. They definitely don't make toys like that anymore.

I really appreciate that you talked about your cost for the item and for the parts. I often wonder when I watch these types of videos how much the subjects cost and then the cost to fix. Excellent video and great job!!

Thank you very much Mark and glad you liked it. I think you are the first one who commented about how much I spent on the restoration. That’s why I stopped to say in my other videos .

Let's be real though, the cost of paint, nickel, and metal wasn't included. It's also easy to keep costs down with $50,000 in tools to fabricate your own everything 😅

That being said, this guy is crazy talented and I love his content, but his costs just won't be realistic whatsoever

Why is this shop so clean? Reminds me of an early 90's SNL skit.

I have some allergy problems and I don’t like to have dust inside the workshop. That’s why I clean almost every day ( depend what work I do in that day) 👍🏻

It's a great restoration, but I'm more impressed with your rivet tool. I need to make me one of those for my restorations.

Very nice work C.A.R.. You guys certainly don't get the respect you deserve.. I can't imagine how much time you actually spent on the entire restoration process and then filming, editing, etc... Again u did a fantastic job, turned out beautiful..
