- I put a lot of effort and invested a lot of money in this restoration. I hope you will enjoy how I restored this Tonka Ser-Vi-Car toy from 1960.
Story of this restoration:
So, I saw this toy by chance on EBay, I noticed that it costs a lot and I wondered why: the answer I found is that there are few toys like this for sale. So,I negotiated with the seller from $99 to $65, he liked the idea of restoring it, so he sent it to me. The toy came to me, I inspected it and deduced that it needed many original parts to restore it professionally. Some parts cost a lot of money, others I was able to creating like the original ones.
I felt that by investing a lot of money in this restoration project, I have to offer you a plus of quality and also to move to a new level of restoration. So I decided to paint with powder (powder coating) , although I have never done it before in my life. This happened somewhere in the middle of the video and after many attempts and tests, I saw the results : they were amazing. I have since known that this restoration video will be wonderful.
As I said, in order for this restoration to be done as professionally as possible, I had to buy some parts. But the biggest challenge of this restoration project was when I realized that I can't find to buy the fork of this Tonka toy. It was the moment when I decided it was the time to document what it looked like and start creating a new one. Once again, the result was wonderful.
The total investment for this restoration reached $ 115, in this calculation we did not add the cost of delivery because this is relative depending on the area of each. But even these shipments were expensive because most of the spare parts, I ordered from the US to Romania.
I like to restore old and rusty items but especially I like to restore Tonka toys. They have a great history behind these toys and many of the viewers will have memories. I hope you like this restoration video like I do and enjoy every moment of the video. I say this because in the process of creating videos for you, every time I try to make the restoration process as easy to understand as possible and the narrative thread of the restoration to be easy to follow.
Last but not least, I would like to thank Tifoo.de for sending me a good quality nickel and nickel solution. After restoring the rear axle of the toy and creating the new fork, I had to apply a layer of nickel to protect them from rust. Their products have helped me a lot in this restoration. That's why I will leave here a link with their online store:
www.tifoo.de/en-uk
You will find many solutions in case you want to do some restorations at home. The method to buy is easy, they are professionals in delivering and packaging the package, but all you need to know is that the only way you can buy nickel solution is if you have a company license. Otherwise, the other products have no restrictions in ordering.
I have no other sponsors for tools and equipment so if you are interested in something specific, write me a comment and I will answer you, as I answer the restorations posted a year ago. Also, if you want to restore Tonka, or restore anything else and do not know where to start, or a certain process, I am at your disposal with any information you need to complete the restoration.
Lastly, I want to wish you a pleasant viewing, I hope you like this restoration video and I will tell you only one thing: the next restoration will take your mind. Stay tuned and Cheers !!! .... and don't forget to subscribe !

Thank you for choosing to watch this video. I am at your disposal with any information you need and I will respond to any comments! Cheers from David!
It's always a pleasure to see your videos, my friend David. hug 🍻
I am brasilian and like yours videos
2 things:
1) I would like you to consider restoring more wood instead of throwing it away and making a new one because wood is almost always fully restorable, thanks. (Nothing to do with this video but asking in general.)
2) How much is the Tonka worth now? Is it a viable activity?
I'm also a brazillian, and I find all your videos amazing, we can see how much care and love you put on it, and that is truly wonderful!
@lucas schnock I will restore more wooden parts in the future and the price for tonka is now between $300 to 400
That looks really good. Crazy to see how expensive the parts can be.
Yes,I was crazy me too when I ordered. And I said in video description,I not calculated the shipping costs 😅
@@CoolAgainRestoration 😁😁😁
Fun counts for something.
Parts are where the money's at... I had a few LEGO Harry Potter sets from 2001 that had some missing parts in discontinued colours. Very expensive, especially the minifigures.
Even when the old toys are very rusty it's amazing how much they go for I have a lot of old tonka's in that shape
I appreciate that you mention the details of your restoration, like products used, sandpaper grit, etc. I used to try to watch my dad do these kinds of things in his workshop, only to be told that it's not the place for girls. "Where's your mother?" I'd often hear. Thankfully (hopefully?) times have changed. It's like I'm watching all the things I missed with Dad!😁
Yeah,I know what you mean. My wife is pregnant and in December I will have a girl. I wanted a boy because of my job,but I think if I see my daughter to be interested in what I make,I will try to learn her these skills 😎
@@CoolAgainRestoration - That would be wonderful. Please encourage her natural curiosity about how things work and patiently answer her questions. This could be something that you two could seriously bond over. When children have a natural interest, please encourage it. More often than not, it will be something they will enjoy all their lives.
Later in life, my dad did come around and apologize for not taking my interests more seriously. But it was the 60s and that was how things were. And we did refinish some furniture together in the early 2000s. Things are much different today, of course. Lucky her...and lucky you.
Many thanks for this advices Kathy 🤗 stay safe and be well ☺️
@@CoolAgainRestoration You too and happy baby!
I will try my best to be a happy girl 😇
The jig you made to pinch the rod. then how you turned it - brilliant. Well done.
Glad you liked it Tony 😊
It was a pleasure to watch this restoration! I think it's great that you invested in powder paint, the finishing is on another level. Can't wait to see your upcoming videos!
Thanks a lot . I will do something that I never seen on CZcams and I didn’t know how to make. But I will figure out 😅 I have only an idea and hope I will transfer in a video 😎
I appreciate how organized you and your videos are. Everything has its own little box or whatever, it’s all so clean. and it’s cute how you name stuff too. It really ties everything together and makes it so satisfying to watch!!!
Glad to read this kind words. I really appreciate! Thank you 😊
The stopper jig and the end result was jaw dropping. Beautiful work, as always.
Thanks a lot Andrea ! Much appreciated
Wow that's beautiful. I can't believe you breathed life into that rusty thing!
I get surprised each time you surpass yourself with the quality of your restorations.
Keep it up man. This is great.
Glad you liked it and many thanks 😊
The real talent (and what I enjoy most) are your fabrication skills.
Thanks a lot man 👍🏻
Really glad you're uploading again, I've absolutely missed your videos!
Glad to hear that and sorry for long time you waited but good things need time 🤷🏻♂️
@@CoolAgainRestoration certainly don't apologise for taking your time, I would take 1 video a month that are really good, rather than 4 videos that are rushed! I'm also really jealous of your workshop!
Thank you very much man and don’t be jealous 😇
Beautiful work! Tonka Toys of the 1950s, 1960s & 70s were made to last. It is nice to see that you take the time to bring these toys back to new! Great!!!
Yeah , you have right and I have 2 more toys to restore this year 😍 stay close
Perfect work on the control rod! Thank you
Thanks my friend 👍🏼
Awesome restoration! Absolutely loved seeing your makeshift tools and ingenuity to handle certain repairs.
Like another person commented, I loved watching my grandpa and uncles fix things. I’m glad they really encouraged me and got me involved in some of their projects. I grew up with a single mom, so I learned how to fix things to help make things easier for her. Now as a grown woman, I love DIY and do most of the home repair in our household. I love that my boys can ask both me and my husband on how to tackle projects.
Congratulations on your baby girl!
Wish you further success on your channel!
Thank you very much for this kind words 😇👍🏻 stay safe and be well
Honestly impressed by your fabrication of the steering rod. Great work!
Thank you very much and glad you liked it Spencer 👍🏻😎
My uncle had a big Tonka dumper truck when he was a kid and when I was about 5 my grandad renovated it and painted it yellow, I think it was originally black? He gave it to me for my birthday and I absolutely loved it. It was all metal and had a cool lever to release the tipper mechanism. They definitely don't make toys like that anymore.
Yes,sad truth. They don’t make things like that anymore ☹️
Looks brand new. This antique should be put in a toy museum for people to appreciate the fine art that goes into the restoration of antique toys.
Thanks man 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Hello fellow Restorer! Great jop ! I like you message of restoring and recycling to save items. I also like the idea of being able to bring items back to life and repurposing them . ❤️👍
Thanks man 👍🏻
how good the designs of tonka toys were, I don't know why lately they only make dump trucks and those weird trucks with faces 🤣
😅😅 me too
Wonderful! This toy was loved very much, so I am glad to see it restored to its previous glory.
Thanks again 😊
When you see someone design and make tools for a job, you know you are witnessing real skill and craftmanship. Very well done, great result !
Thank you very much Fiona and glad you liked !
This one was great! It's always amazing to see you make custom tools and jigs to make repairs. As for the video itself, a perfect length (less than 15 minutes) and the sound recording is wonderful. Can't wait for your next one!
Thank you very much Steve and glad you like my work 🤗😎👍🏻

I have not seen this Tonka before - what a find! And it came alive under your hands - great job!
Thanks buddy
In the beginning during disassembly I felt I needed a tetanus shot just watching. It turned out beautiful in the end. Great work! It's nice there's old parts for Tonka still around.
Thank you very much man 👍🏻
That is an amazing restoration. I am especially impressed by the self-made tools used to create the fork.
Is this toy based on an actual vehicle? I have never seen anything like it, and I cannot figure out what purpose it would serve. Maybe on a small farm.
Thanks William and glad you like my work. This toy was for to move the luggage in the airport. The real name of the toy is : tonka ser vi car airport
This seems to be based on the 1950s Cushman Truckster.
Top notch. You are one of the few restoration channels I can be bothered to watch.
Thanks for that Dave 😊
Your attention to detail made this video extremely pleasurable to watch! Thank you very much. 👏

Thank you very much and glad you liked it 😊
Fantastic job! It turned out perfect.
Thanks Kim 😎👍🏻
I have so much to say. The fact you make tools to restore things reminds me of my carpenter dad. He passed away the end of August at 87. He was very ill. But your spirit is where the value of these restorations are truly spent. You can not put a price on the labor of love. Much like my father, that is a gift only the talented can give back. Your work will live on. Be well, my friend.
Be well you too my friend and thank you very much for this kind words. Sorry about your dad and to make this conversation more funny I will say is your first comment when you don’t remember me about the laser 😅👍🏻👍🏻
@@CoolAgainRestoration - Wanted a more serious tone. But yeah, laser! 🤪
😅😅👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Holy smokes!!!! $100+ to restore such a small item 😨😨 plus powder coating. That is dedication 👍👍👍
Thanks man and glad you liked it 👍🏻😎
I like how you add the cost for each part bought👍👍👍
Thanks John 👍🏻
I loved this video! Your helper, El Cleanero, was so cute! 😍😍😍

Beautifully done.
Thank you very much Kahuto 👍🏻
Another amazing restore
Brilliant job! Love your work
Thank you very much 😎👍🏻
Well you have confirmed one thing for sure, restoration of a 1960's toy, orginal coating maybe, $2.50, now costs over $100.00 to own. Beautiful workmanship and detailing. Thanks for sharing. 😁👍🇺🇸🇨🇱
Hi Paul! Glad you liked it and thanks for that 👍🏻 🇺🇸
все на высшем уровне спасибо за обзор удачи вам
Spasibo brother 👏
Wonderful restoration 👏 👍 🤝
Thanks 😊
I really appreciate that you talked about your cost for the item and for the parts. I often wonder when I watch these types of videos how much the subjects cost and then the cost to fix. Excellent video and great job!!
Thank you very much Mark and glad you liked it. I think you are the first one who commented about how much I spent on the restoration. That’s why I stopped to say in my other videos .
Let's be real though, the cost of paint, nickel, and metal wasn't included. It's also easy to keep costs down with $50,000 in tools to fabricate your own everything 😅
That being said, this guy is crazy talented and I love his content, but his costs just won't be realistic whatsoever
That piece is bragworthy - well done! ✌🏻🎨☕️
Thank you very much Susannah 🤗🤩
Why is this shop so clean? Reminds me of an early 90's SNL skit.
I have some allergy problems and I don’t like to have dust inside the workshop. That’s why I clean almost every day ( depend what work I do in that day) 👍🏻
It's a great restoration, but I'm more impressed with your rivet tool. I need to make me one of those for my restorations.
Yes,it’s a great tool 👍🏻
Very nice work C.A.R.. You guys certainly don't get the respect you deserve.. I can't imagine how much time you actually spent on the entire restoration process and then filming, editing, etc... Again u did a fantastic job, turned out beautiful..
Glad to hear that Gary. Thank you very much 👍🏻🍻
Love your restoration quality! Greetings from Brazil! Awesome work!
Thank you very much Lucas 😎👍🏻🇧🇷
Very good work David, congratulations 😎🍻
Thank you very much my friend 👍🏻😎🍻🍻🍻
Yeah, sandblasting,my favorite 👍🏼👍🏼😄 VERY SOOTHING 😆💯💯
The clicks as things snapped into place might be the most satisfying noises I’ve ever heard.
Yeah,I love too that clicks 🤩
Lovely!!!
Thanks, big up!
Thank you very much 🤠
Great job friend, superb restoration, have a nice day !!!.
Thank you very much Brian , I really appreciate 👍🏻 have a nice day too
