    Hey yo, quick tip to anyone who doesn't vlog or point a camera at their own face from a couple centimeters away.. A 24-70 f/2.8 is pretty much the only lens you will need if filming with a full frame camera, I'd recommend the sigma unless you've got very deep pockets. Also love your new secretary Matti, he knows his codecs well. 👌

      so true. if i'd shoot a documentary with a director/producer the 24-70 or even 24-105 would be my first choice. maybe a prime for b-roll after that if we have time. Been there done that, if your job is to get the shot... .

    A 24-70 is a very versatile lens, it's great if you're just starting out in filmmaking and you're wondering which lens should you buy first, also a good 24-70 lens will last you a lifetime. On the other hand, your comment is valid, it may lack character however you can also upgrade your gear in the future and opt for a good prime lens set.
    Tip: Own the basics and rent the rest if you're doing this as a career 😉

  • @RiceCubeTech
    @RiceCubeTech Před 2 lety +4

    I use the sigma 24-70 2.8 ART and it’s one of the best lenses I’ve ever owned. It’s so versatile and I use it on most if not every shoot unless I’m using my underwater housing, or doing architecture photography in which I use my 20mm 1.8. Carrying 4 lenses to achieve the relatively same focusing range (24mm 35mm 50mm and 85mm), just isn’t realistic for a lot of people who aren’t in a studio.
    This lens looks great but with already owning the sigma, this doesn’t offer enough difference

    Years ago, I bought a 35-70mm f/2.8 D Nikkor auto focus zoom lens.
    Later, I upgraded to 28-70mm f/2.8 D Nikkor auto focus zoom lens.
    When Nikon replaced the 28-70 D with the 24-70mm f/2.8 G auto focus zoom lens, I did not buy it because it was a “G” lens that did not have an aperture ring. Some of my camera bodies need the aperture ring for exposure control.

  • @CamberFilmSchool
    @CamberFilmSchool Před 2 lety +5

    The tightening of the zoom ring is probably so that it won't change focal lengths if it gets bumped or for an overhead shot so that the weight of the lens doesn't change the focal length (that has happened to me on a sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 because it was really loose). Loosening focal ring it will help with smoother zooms.

I purchased ultra-wide and telephoto zooms & primes in 35mm f/1.2 & anamorphic 50mm t/2.9 instead. I have to say, I had a 16-35 for a while, but when you're actually going light, it just isn't enough range for pulling an interesting variety of shots together for a mini-sequence, especially on FF! Switched out to a 24-70 2.8ii (Canon) a few years ago and never looked back. Truly cannot love any 24-105 or similar though, that F4 just really takes the edge off everything and it's just a bit dull! I have to disagree. Unless you are holding the camera and pointing it at yourself all the time, a 24-70 is a much better story telling lens than a wide zoom.
    I would much rather have a wide, fast prime such as a 20mm f1.8, 24-70 f2.8, and a 70-200 f2.8.
    Work horse focal ranges are convenient while the specialty ones (wide or telephoto) are present and at fast apertures when needed. Obvious use cases vary but that kind of kit is extremely flexible.

    Interesting to hear why you haven’t purchased a 24-70. What’s interesting is your reasons not to buy are the reasons that is my number one go-to lens. I don’t like to carry three lenses (35mm, 50mm, & 85mm) when I can have one that covers roughly the same range. When was the last time I needed more than f/2.8? Can’t remember. In fact, f/2.8 is more than most of m6 shots. Sure, you get amazing bokeh with an f/1.2 but that is just over two stops better. It also makes the focus plane about five mm thick, so eye in focus but nose out. Love my RF 24-70. It’s always on my camera, every day, walk around lens.

    Let me tell you a 24-70mm is a vacation lense if you prefer taking more portraits. i have a 16-35mm for vacations i can take my portraits and my landscape\travel photography shots. Basically you dont have to carry all your kit at your vacations. these lenses are cool.

    For that price I’d rather go for the Tamron 35-150 f2-2.8.

      Sony does make shaper lens than tamron and that lens is bigger. For people that won't use higher than 70mm, i would understand why.
      I bought the Tamron 28-250mm and i love it so yeah, i with you with ''team Tamron''

    Nothing beats in portability to the Sigma 28-70mm F2.9 DG DN C. Only 470gr and it's tiny compared to that one.

      Isn't that f2.8 not f2.9? But yes it's also the cheapest as it's now a third of the price of the new Sony GM ii.

  • @jonshin31

    Totally agree on the 24-70, just nothing special about it - sure you can get special images, but not special because of the lens. I will say though that I still keep one just for those times that I feel lazy and only want to carry around a single body+lens. But there's nothing like a 14mm, or an f1.2-1.4 prime, or a real telephoto zoom for that special sauce you can't get with a 24-70.

    Just got to full frame with a a7IV and a sigma art 24-70 and i understand the average at everything . I miss the 85 1.8 i had on an aps c with the nifty fifty from canon for example big time . 24-70 is a swiss knife , nothing more , nothing less .

    • @mrobitwice77
      @mrobitwice77 Před 2 lety

      I also have the A7iv. Got the 35 gm to start and added the 70-200 2.8 mk2 . I have zero regrets with those two combos. Maybe someday I get the 16-35 but not anytime soon

  • @marioplumber3564

    The 24-70mm is over hyped. It encompasses the most common focal lengths, but it doesn't do them as well as their prime counterparts. I'd be willing to pay $3k for one IF AND ONLY IF, they could get it to a f/2 or f/1.8. Beyond that, I'll get a used 24mm GM and a 85mm.

  • @legacyfitness7469
    @legacyfitness7469 Před 2 lety

    Agree on the “average” appreciation… 24 to 135 is prime faster lenses territory…
