  • Sony has unveiled the FE 20-70mm F4 G, a versatile standard zoom lens that offers both ultra-wide and long-end focal lengths. Despite its compact and lightweight design, the lens maintains a constant F4 aperture and does not include image stabilization. The 20mm starting point provides a wider angle of view than 24mm lenses, allowing for greater flexibility in video shooting even when digital stabilization is engaged.
I want to know what you think this lens in the comments.

I’ve got this lens on order already, it’s literally the PERFECT mountain adventure lens for what I have been shooting lately. I don’t mind the f/4 AT ALL since it makes it way smaller than my 24-70 f/2.8 GM II, and that weight savings is worth the loss of a stop of light.

      Very interesting!
I have recently acquired the Sony FE 20-70mm f/4 G lens too.
However, one thing is bothering me or rather I would like to clarify whether it is a general issue with this lens or whether it is a defect specifically with my lens. The lens makes a noise when focussing (with autofocus).
By the way, the volume of the noise varies depending on the aperture setting. At f/4 the noise is very minimal, almost inaudible. From f/4.5, however, it is clearly audible. And the higher the aperture number (for example f/13), the longer it takes to focus and the longer the noise lasts. However, these differences are small.
I am not yet familiar with focusing noises from lenses recently released by Sony. For example, the new Sony FE PZ 16-35mm f/4 G and the new Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS II are 100% completely silent. The older Sony FE 18mm f/1.8 G, on the other hand, also makes the noise described above, if I remember correctly.
Does your lens also make this noise? Many thanks in advance!

I realize it's a year old comment but don't go for the outdated 24-105, you will get better imagine quality with the 20-70 cropped to 105 and on the wide end 20 is very noticeable compared to 24

I can't think of a reason to sell my 24-105 for this new lens. I got the very small and lightweight 16-35 f4.0 PZ zoom. Why, 20mm isn't wide enough. I want 16mm. This is what people are going to say once they say 20 is not wide enough so I bought a 16mm lens. This is a never ending argument. I got the 14-24mm f2.8 and the 24-70mm f2.8 Sigmas. That ultrawide is sweet, and it starts out at 14mm. I love wide angle lens. I want a fisheye one day. Had one for my Nikon F2a years ago and it was a blast to use.

Folks, if you bitching about competitors - you just need to understand that lens design is all about what compromise you want to make.
Want a fast aperture - get the 1.4 prime,
want it small as well - sacrifice a stop and go with 1.8 prime,
    want a 2.8 - either sacrifice the zoom range (get a Tamron 20-40 2.8)
or go with a big, heavier and more expensive 24-70 2.8.
Want a bigger reach - 24-105 F/4 would be bigger and much heavier.
If you want it all - just look at Canon's 28-70 F/2, at it's size, price & weight.
You should view this as a modern era kit replacement - awesome IQ, good zoom, nice weight & size.
The only thing I wish for this lens is to be smaller - for F/4 it's kind of big, but I guess it's a consequence of modern lens design that requires fast focusing motors to be put in.

I think this lens, with this spec, has a very decent price ($1099) for what it offers as a SONY G lens. It is actually an upgrade for 24-70 f/4 and parallel to 24-105 f/4 IMO. I don't know why people are saying that it should be f/2.8 or 20-105/f4, in that case, it will be huge and much more expensive! The first thing for a lens in my mind is always price and weight, unless you don't mind something like a Canon 28-70 f/2.
So this lens should be a perfect option for those who needs a zoom for landscape or indoor shooting. It is a fantastic lens and deserves more praise.

100% grabbing this. I work full time on a documentary style home reno show and this is perfect! Shot a full season on the fx9 and while I primary used a 24-70 f2.8 I found myself shooting at F4 for the most part.
Focus is easier to grab in the run and gun environment and I don’t need to crush the background all the time. Given the amazing low light performance of new sensors I value range more than that extra stop of light.
Also got the chance to try out the DZO catta zooms which were awesome, but just not wide enough at 35mm and I like having push button autofocus.

This 20-40 f4 lens is just genious. I'm coming from Sony APS-C and my 16-55 f2.8 (equivalent to 24-83 f4.2 on FF) was for me the best always-on travel/ hiking lens so far. But the 16mm was often not wide enough. Now Sony manages to replace this APS-C combo with even significantly more wide angle in a similar weight and form factor on full-frame which is absolutely amazing. Sure, "only" F4, but that's equivalent to f2.8 on APS-C and that was for me always perfectly fine for a travel/ landscape lens. Small weight just counts when you are traveling/ hiking. The price is the only downside of this lens. Here in Europe Sony wants to have 1.300€ (which is 1.380 USD or 2.150 AUD) unfortunately, which is much more expensive than in the US. That's too much. I will wait until it is on sale sometime.

I prefer f/4 for normal portraits anyway. f/2 or above is for special beauty effects. And, if you want blurred background, there is also the option of using a much longer lens, like 135mm.

  • @waynerm002

Sony seems to be working on making more compact lens for their cameras. I like the PZ 17-35 f/4's compact size and find it works well on the FX30 and A7R V for video use. The 20mm end of the 20-70 f/4 is something useful for when you want to get a wide view shot of video however, it does compromise a bit for low light use. Most people shooting professionally, will have f/2.8 down to f/1.4 lens, for their needs. That person with a lower budget, would welcome this, even if it is f/4. The power zoom feature would have been a nice addition for this lens. If they made this a f/2.8, it would end up being bigger and cut into their sales of the 24-70 f/2.8 GMII, which is a new lens. I suspect this will be their new kit lens, much in the way Nikon has a really sharp and well performing 24-70 f/4 S. Sony's G line lens perform quite well, while being a step down from their GM line but, having similar features. I think this is a good buy.
I'm curious to see what else Sony brings out this year in terms of lens.

I disagree about the cost -- the price should definitely be below $1k USD. I literally can't think of a single person that would be willing to drop the MSRP on an f/4 kit lens that has horrible distortion at 20mm. I'm pretty sure the 24-105 f/4 that has optical steadyshot is right around the same price as this lens but is justified bc of the extended zoom range (that is entirely usable because it doesn't have insane distortion at one of the ends) as well as having optical stabilization.

      Great.

I actually agree with everything you said, but the price is what's throwing me off. Maybe the only person I could see purchasing this lens is a landscape photographer that only shoots during the day time. I just don't know why you would pick this over a 16-35 (f/4 or 2.8), over a wide (AF or manual) prime that could cover astro work too, or over a Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 (who cares about native autofocus when you are stopping down and shooting wide for landscapes?) Drop the price to $800-900 (or lower) and maybe it enters the conversation for budget options if people need to go wider than 24mm. At least for me it's incredibly rare that I go from needing to be wider than 24 while also being able to zoom into something like 70, so I'd rather go with the other options I mentioned than spend the money on this lens.

Because when your vlogging you want 2.8. there's no other explanation. When your vlogging you don't carry lights around with you. And I don't understand why Sony will go through making all of these great low light sensors with high dynamic range and then put on lenses of f4. Especially on the aps-c line. I have the f x 30. And I absolutely love it by the way but the 16 - 55 is not quite as wide as I would like it to be for vlogging. So when Sony came out with 10-20 f4 I was just frustrated. The fx30 exposes almost perfectly as a human eye would at f 2.8 and ISO 800. So that means I can't use the new power zoom indoors at all. Because you don't want to use the second base ISO if you're not going to be able to reduce the light in post. The only other option is the 11 mm prime and because I love shooting landscape photography I've never been a fan of prime. So now I have to go buy the Tamron 11 to 20. I do love a nice zoom lens and focal length is a big deal, but if it's not 2.8 I don't want it.. let's not forget the obvious fact that everybody strives for bouquet with portraits. Meaning nobody's going to be buying this lens for portraits. I absolutely love Sony cameras and the fact that they let third-party companies have their specs four lenses. But I'm hating their decision to come out with these F4 power zooms and super small lenses with crazy focal lengths. Tamron made that 11-18 f2.8 years ago. Why Sony hasn't released one baffles me. They should have had a counterpart with that power zoom.

When I learned about high end/luxury wedding films being shot almost exclusively on 24-105 and 70-200 F4s for the outdoor/ceremony and then going for the extreme 1.4 and 1.2 primes for the receptions or darker preps.. it really drove home the idea of using the proper gear for the environments.

I seriously considered buying this lens. I have the 24-105mm Sony lens, which I love, and decided instead to purchase the 16-35mm f4 pz lens instead of the 20-70mm f4. I am an older guy, always travel with two camera bodies (A1 & A7R V) and usually the 24-105mm f4 and Sony's 100-400mm lens. I spend a lot of time in the field and want to keep the weight of my bag at a manageable level. As you note, it is easy to push the ISO especially when shooting wildlife when I am often shooting at f9 and with a very high shutter speed. So an f4 lens that is very small, fits easily in my bag adding very little weight. If we were talking astro shooting, I use the very small 14mm f1.8 which weighs only 460g. So, Jason's perspective makes perfect sense to me.

The cost of a 20-70mm f1.4 would be ridiculous cost... ! Nothing wrong with f4.

For me the biggest difference between those lenses is that you in order to mantain the same exposure with the f4, you will have to double the amount of ISO and that for me is a deal breaker, that limits me in a lot of situations, is no the same image at 4000 ISO as at 8000 ISO

What people are missing is that this lens is PROOF OF CONCEPT.
So many Sony shooters piss and moan about lenses being too big and too heavy. Those who don't do this at least semi-professionally don't realize that lens weight is not a bad thing. And this little lens clocking in at 1lb and as small as it is? Sony achieved a major goal here, and the awesome thing is that it's something that may pave the way for, say, an 18-70 f/2.8 FE lens or similar. I'm waiting for the next year of innovation to see what other cool ideas stem from this.

Wake me up when Sony drops a 16-40 2.8 to f2 (like the tamron 35-150) with the 25-40 range being f2 like the batis primes. Slap in some close focus and we got a lens to crown king. Till then I’ll just keep dreaming.
