- I am "chasing" Dominik on is BMW R 1200 GS up the Passo di Falzarego through August traffic in the Dolomites. This was the first time for me in August. Earlier trips have been in May or June were there is less traffic.
The Passo di Falzarego is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 2.105m (6,906ft) above the sea level, located in the province of Belluno in Italy. The pass is traversed by the SR48.

Where did you get the information that motorbike traffic will be banned? There is a speed limit for all traffic (not just motorcycles) on many of the roads since last year to cope with heavy traffic in the summer months

@@MotoVibes until now it is as you say but the administrations of Trentino Alto Adige do not like the behavior of many motorcyclists and the intense traffic on the passes in the summer. last summer the speed limit was lowered to 60km / h. evidently the message has not arrived. they will install cameras for reading license plates in a first phase to monitor the movements between the mountain passes, the accesses, the instantaneous speeds and the speed between one pass and another. based on the data they will evaluate the restrictions. For now they only talk about sellaronda but they want to extend it to neighboring ones too ... with a bit of common sense it would not come to that, to run there are tracks

Thank you Niccolò - I had to translate to get an idea of the content. Reads like a monitoring system is planned for the region. My understanding is that it will check for speeding vehicles but it does not say that traffic is banned or does it?!

It was a pleasure to watch this GS driver. Extremely save line, especially in left corners. Very fast and this with the soft suspension! And a very „round“ driving style, not digital. Good job!
Plus his bike was loaded with 40 kg of luggage! Dominik is an excellent rider!
It is good to see there are bikers out there who can actually ride a bike. 90% are just bike owners, riding like they're driving a car. I know the feeling when you find some random person on the road who rides in the same pace with you. It is rare, but it's real fun. :)
I know this video is 2 years old, but the sound could be better with an external mic. I use a wired one, but it still worth the extra headace with the wire. The audio is so much better.

Nearly wiped out a cyclist and himself a couple of times. Rider needs some practice in correct cornering techniques.
Philip Marshall Tank you for your comment. I did not remember close calls with bycicles. Some can really go fast but I try to leave enough room. For me they are the real heroes climbing these roads on just muscle power breathing our exhaust air. They get my full respect and admiration for this. Would love to have that stamina on a bike. I am happy to make room for them when I have to 😜😎👍cyclist are awesome 👑

Yes it does - especially the new 1250 GS. However, the real benefit is during chill low rev riding or slow offroad parts - the smooth power delivery of the BMW is nice for that. This kinda riding you are riding in the mid to upper rev range ;-)

Would like to do this after France and Switzerland next summer.
You should make a video explaining a route that you rode through with suggested overnight stops, I am reckoning that the entire trip would take two weeks taking in all the places of interest along the way..............................
it did take 2 weeks total - I had a few days solo before my buddy and I met in Switzerland to do our big France tour. Maybe I find a simple way of sharing routes/gpx data in the future. The videos eat up quite a bit of the little spare time I have between working a 50+ hours day job and family ;-)

Absolutely - i think at the time the bike had more than 140,000 km on the odometer and it was fully loaded with 4-weeks worth of luggage- takes a good rider to move it like this 😉
Dominique ist offensichtlich unter "Druck" und überfordert, er macht gaaaanz eigenartige Fahrmanöver. Du hingegen scheinst ein sehr routinierter Fahrer zu sein.
Ich glaube sein Style kommt eher aus der Offroad Ecke (drücken statt legen) - er fährt gut 30-40 TKM im Jahr ;-)
I always find it difficult to understand people who, on vacation, take risks for themselves and others on roads crowded with motorhomes and cyclists... and then I don't think we have time to admire the landscape is really not my way of traveling by motorbike.. the two motorcycles found themselves many times on the left lane without visibility.. Russian roulette? Why?
the guys obviously have mastered their motorcycle - both of them urgently need extra tuition when it comes to complying with traffic rules and being considerate in traffic.
well, thank you but I do not really get the urgency for complying with traffic rules? on a few occassions we exceeded the speed limit of 90 kph for a short while but show me a rider who doesn't - most of it was well within the speed limit + 20 kph. We slowed it down in every town and not a single time did we pass other traffic in a no passing zone. cheers 😎
Schön gechillt gefahren, ihr wisst wie es geht. Wenn dein Kollege sein Heck mit mehr Vorspannung etwas höher stellen würde, müsste er nicht so brutal drücken um enge Radien fahren zu können.

Reminds me when me and my wife were riding 2 up fully loaded on our old oil head GSA 1150 In Croatia, we were able to keep up and over take more modern bikes KTM and Honda Africa twin, that had single riders no pillons. Cant fault the old cows, they like the weight and Corners. 😂🙌🏿👌🏾👍🏾

The ktm even short shifting is lots faster than the GS
But the GS was loaded with a lot more luggage and has quite a few horses less under the hood. I am amazed how fast this thing goes with the right rider 😉
Very nice ride! I follows all of your ride and I see you go really fast compared with my skill. I have BTW a question about cornering style and would like to have your opinion. In this video your companion is almost ever using the "Push-it-Under" style, similar to dirty bike riding. I prefer body steering tecnique together with counter-steering etc. What do you think? thank a lot.
I think that a lot has to do with the bike itself, and not just rider preference.
The boxer engine in the GS acts like a pendulum, which means the bike encourages you to 'push out' the lower part of the bike. On the GS, it feels very natural to sit straight and let the bike swing left and right beneath you. I have tried and I have found that hanging off a GS doesn't do much ...
Hi Stefano - thank you very much for your comment. Let's see if I can give a short answer. There are basically three main riding styles when cornering - leaning, pushing & hanging off - these will work on every motorcycle. As you observed correctly Dominique is push steering more than leaning - I assume that is his offroad background - he does quite a bit of offroad with these heavy adventure bikes. Leaning or even hanging off on roads with good grip will allow you to corner with less lean angle - or if the lean angle is the same corner faster. So if you after speed - hanging off would be the cornering technique of your choice on dry roads - if you want to go fast on roads with less grip (wet, dirt) push steering is the way to go - there are some videos in wet conditions with Dominique riding in front - he goes faster than I would dare to go ;-)
I hope this helps - If you haven't already considered a riding training I would recommend you do a cornering training - they are a lot of fun and you can learn a lot. Ride safe! cheers

Ich verstehe es nicht, wieso fährt der Typ auf der GS jede Kurve mit bremse ? In den Scheitelpunkt bremsen verstehe ich. Aber das ? Nutzt der die Hinterradbremse um das Motorrad unter Last länger zu ziehen, um das Motorrad zu stabilisieren oder wieso ? I need help!! I want to know this... :O

It appears to me that the BMW handles effortless in the curves where the KTM stumbles a bit. I suspect the 21" front tire creates a bit more problems laying into the curve. Is this what you find true?
Actually both bikes run the same wheels size 17/19". I know have the R and I am curious on the 21" front will to in corners.

Meanwhile, because of rides like this (or even worse to be honest), the mountain roads now have a 60 km/h limit in Trentino, in some cases even only for motorbikes, while cars may go 90! So, thanks a lot guys, mission accomplished! 😡
Wann war das ? Dem Holz am Anfang vom Pass nach schätze ich auf 7 / 19 . Zu der Zeit war ich auch in der Gegend.

@@user-zv3mw2te9p Deshalb war die Haupttour auch für die Westalpen geplant (da wir leider nicht flexible mit dem Zeitfenster waren) aber irgendwie hat es mich gejuckt auf dem Hinweg "kurz" mal durch die wunderbaren Dolomiten zu fahren. Dafür, dass dieser Monat Hauptferienzeit in Italien ist ging es dann aber wieder ;-) Der Spätherbst wurde mich von der Jahreszeit noch einmal reizen ...

Can the GS keep up with the KTM? You seem to be always slowing down, hard to tell when ones not there :)
The GS is a lot heavier with more luggage- the bike had 140k km on the odometer- considering all that I am amazed how well he handles the bike. I think the air cooled GS had about 50 horse power less thank the KTM on top of all that 😉
this is The old GS. ANYWAY goes faster of a lot of bikes. In two up and luggage there isn t story for NOBODY

Which one is better at cornering you think?
I would say first and foremost it depends on the rider - if you dare to scrape hard parts of your motorcycle (you should not on a public road 😎) the KTM will give you better lean angle as the cylinders for the BMW will start to scrape the pavement at one point and limit the lean angle of the bike. However, before that happens your footpegs will scrape first so this will not happen unannounced. The KTM will likely be limited what the tires can handle. That would be the technical side of cornering with regards to lean angle.
With all that said - they are both fun to rail around a corner as you can see in this video 😎 cheers

I am the rider in front, my bike is an 2010 - 1200GS Adventure (33l tank) and no the bike doesn´t have a traction control ;)

the rider before you seems a little unconfident and pushing their skills to the limit. I personally avoid intimidating from behind people who are slower as it may lead for them trying to go past their limits and cause an accident.. likewise when I see someone behind me is faster, I'd rather let them go than constantly feel the pressure. mountain passes are not a track so not worth the risk ;)
I would agree with not pushing people from behind and it is nice to know that you are someone who will let faster riders pass . We were riding together here so it wasn't really a "chase" (see description). The GS rider is actually quite a skilled rider - especially if you consider that he is moving an air-cooled GS with 140k KM on the clock - fully loaded with 40 kg of luggage around these corners. ;-)
@@MotoVibes that makes much more sense now ;) although, he just seemed unstable in the corners, counter balancing and seemed like almost dropped it on a few occasions, that's why I assumed it was a random rider who was just trying to keep up ahead of you. to contrary, your riding seemed much calmer and stable, no unnecessary steering adjustments mid corner. ride safe!

@@plllot9713 Hey Eric, I am the rider in front, I gotta admit that on the video on some occasions the bike looks a little unstable when I throttle up after the apex, but that is due to the very soft suspension and I was riding heavily loaded. regarding the " steering adjustment" : I like to push the bike on small roads like that to have a better view around corners because my body is up right ( especially right hand corners)...I go straight in to the corner and once i see its free I push it hard down (apex) and I like the back sliding a little hahaha But well, we never actually went to the limit on the whole ride. take care and ride safe!

I could only judge based on what I saw on the video, or what I think I saw I should say ;) I didn't read the video description at first, as only just watched it on my lunch break on my phone. I was only worried about what I expressed in my first post, that it was someone random in the front who was trying to keep up in front of a faster rider and being intimidated from behind that could lead to a bad ending. I'm happy to be be wrong though ;) Have fun gents! I always ride solo and I can only imagine what joy it must be to be riding with someone you know and you can have some fun riding with :)
