Yes he has amazing technique. Very few humans can sing like John. Blues, soul, Opera, power Ballard's, country and rock.
From Gethsemane to Black Dog he can truly sing anything and is a very humble nice guy to boot.

It's a rabbit hole I've been travelling down for about the past 12 months. And more than happy to do so. It's Farnham day every day in my house. Only really discovered him about a year ago, so I've been bringing up and playing every video of John's that is on youtube. It's a goldmine. And I've found myself wishing he'd have sung more songs in the lower registers as well. Such an exceptional, unique and exquisite voice. 14.1.24. UK. E❤

    Opera - Granada
Musical theatre - Gethsemane (from Jesus Christ Superstar)
Led Zeppelin cover - Black Dog (audio only)
AC/DC cover - It's a Long Way To The Top
And so many more greats. I have not heard a song by John Farnham that I don't like.
    Enjoy the journey

Man is a vocal chameleon and complete performer. Are there better singers? Possibly. Are there singers with more range? Sure. Are there any that match the whole package? That’s a hard bar to clear.
He’s probably a tenor, and it’s probably more noticeable later in his career when he more or less retired that rasp. But, he’s quite comfortable singing across a massive range.
As for hard rock - he’s covered Led Zeppelin (Black Dog) and AC/DC (Long Way to the Top), He’s sung opera with Anthony Warlow, sang lead with the Little River Band for awhile, sung 80s movie montage music with his work on the RAD soundtrack, does a pretty damn good rendition of Bridge Over Troubled Water, ballads, gospel, pop - does it all really.
For a man of his immense power, range and presence he really, REALLY shines when singing with others. His duets are all superb. Consummate performer.

Anyone new to John Farnham - just watch every single youtube clip - concerts, 50th birthday show, duets with Celine Dion and others, snatches of Jesus Christ superstar, his performances from the late teens onwards, rock, opera, country, even Old Mcdonald had a Farm. etc etc. There isn't one track that I don't love. I don't think you'll be disappointed. 19.10.23. UK. E❤

This concert I believe is 1989, John first performed his version(not asemphatic as this) around 1974; according to sources, John Lennon upon hearing this version is credited as saying "This is the way it was meant to be sung!". John also has done some memorable duets with both Australian and International artists, one in particular was with Australia's Olivia Newton John singing Please Don't Ask Me from The Main Event Concert; he also did a bluesy duet with Jimmy Barnes(From Cold Chisel) of a Sam & Dave song "When Something is Wrong With My Baby" from Jimmy's Soul Deep concert. John has the ability to sing most genres, even a bit of opera; he has also done musical theatre, most notably Gethsemane from the stage play Jesus Christ Superstar. He is an Australian icon and gem, a true gentleman of entertainment.

Yo.. thanks for bringing us this live event - love Farnsey, he’s beyond an icon in Australia, and from everything I’ve read/seen, he’s also a really, really nice man. Last vid I saw him in was 2019, he was singing at a benefit concert to raise funds for ‘Fire Fight Australia’ (brush fires).. he was on stage with Brian May and Olivia Newton-John…. Still hitting all the notes at 70 yrs old! He’s since been diagnosed with cancer and had surgery to remove part of his jaw. Postings today suggested that he’s now cancer free (yeah)!!! Great analysis - as always… TY!

This concert was advertised as John and his Big Band in typical Aussie understatement, it's a 100+ piece orchestra for crying out loud. lol
This song is one of the last songs that he would sing at the end of the night after he had already sung his heart out for nearly 3 hours.
Some have pointed out that this particular recording of the concert was closer to 2 hours of actual singing during the TV special, but it was also on the 4th or 5th night that he had sung like this.
Either way, it was one of multiple nights that he did this on January 4-10, 1989, so his voice is still worthy of the accolades.
Not many other singers can belt like that for even 2 or 3 nights without a rest.
And besides picking at the exact details or this exact performance, Farnsey also has a way of getting deep into the emotions of your soul.
A couple of songs worth checking have been mentioned below, plus these are worth a look also.
The reason you haven't heard of him is because the US music industry is a closed little club. When John Farnham went to the US they didn't know which genre to put him in so his US promotions manager got him a couple of gigs in a little jazz club, where the MC introduced him as Jack Phantom. Couldn't even be bothered getting his name correct, so being a bit disheartened he wandered home to concentrate on his loyal fan base. The experience did give him inspiration to write a couple of good songs about missing his family, like this one.
    -Burn For You..
    czcams.com/video/4PPvOhPspEA/video.html
    -Angels..
Notice how he holds the mike below his chest, both mikes are a metre away, which he does all the time to not drown out the other singers.
JF with Lisa Edwards, a top singer in her own right, and one of John's back up singers for 20+ years.
    czcams.com/video/5_2NJRIdBO8/video.html
    -Amazing Grace..
To show the calibre of his other back up Singers, showing you have to be good in your own right, just like Lisa.
This is Vanetta Fields and Lindsey Field.
    czcams.com/video/_x6N94OEkZQ/video.html
    -Please Don't Ask Me..
This one with Olivia Newton John, who we have recently lost. John has also had major cancer surgery including removal of part of his jaw and we may not hear him sing again. So let's enjoy this one as well..
    czcams.com/video/2uV_tZODfK8/video.html
-When Something Is Wrong With My Baby....
And even when he is singing with one of the most powerful voices on the planet, Jimmy Barnes, he still put the mike away from his face and closer to Jonny Diesel on guitar.
    czcams.com/video/AU_bCchDWF4/video.html
    Or this version.
    czcams.com/video/RAlFHSPLHpo/video.html
    -When The War Is Over…
Possibly one of his greatest vocals.
    czcams.com/video/lfWrXc5eN8g/video.html
    -Or is the greatest.
    Gethsemane..
    czcams.com/video/k5woMZtClhI/video.html
    -How about a mike test.
He has the power and ability to distort microphones, amps, and get speaker stacks jumping. So this sort of setting up the venue test is a must. Lol
    Black Dog.
    czcams.com/video/F2Yi6TVi-sU/video.html
Besides having the best voice ever, JF can adjust his tone, pitch, volume, to match the person he is singing with to either match them or sing just under them depending on who's the head line act, he will even back himself down when he is the head line to give others their moment to shine, and if my ears were sensitive enough, I wouldn't be surprised if he could vary his vibrato, timbre and all of those other things that voices can do so he could accentuate the other singers.

John's voice is off the charts. He truly is a much loved Aussie icon. He can sing so many different genres. Take a look at John's cover of Black Dog, audio only as it was only done as a sound check, or Burn for you, a beautiful ballad. By the way he's a tenor. If you want to see him venturing into opera, check out John Farnham and Anthony Warlow singing Granada from a concert called The Main Event.

The more you go down the John Farnham rabbit hole the more amazed you’ll be. I believe he has sung up to a g5, but don’t quote me on that. John has an extraordinary voice that we’ve had the pleasure of for over 50 years. This concert in particular was epic and you could react to every song and be surprised by his epic voice. John can and has sung anything and even sung with Anthony warlow(Australian opera singer) and in this concert did an epic version of it’s a long way to the top(AC/DC) cover.

If you want to hear a great example of Farnesy's range, you really need to listen to his version of LZ's Black Dog. You won't find any video of it as it was only a 'sound-check' that his sound engineer had the initiative to record so we can all hear it. It's epic.

The information I have is that he only ever performed this for an audience once. John's audiences ranged from 8 to 80, where this song tends to appeal to a narrower audience. It did eventually make it onto one of his Anthology albums. This exists because one of his sound techs hit record (1994 I believe). As you're listening, consider this. It wasn't rehearsed for a performance, it's basically a jam session. Also points to unbelievable skill of his band.

Farnham is simply entertainment royalty in Australia. He had a gig for a while as lead singer for the Little River Band. His 'farewell tour' was done to every little town and village in Australia with two circus bigtops. One would be in use while the other leapfrogged over to the next venue and was being set up there ready for the next night. I am sure there are plenty of people who are surprised to learn that the Beatles covered theJohn Farnham song "Help"
