Transplanting miniature human brains into mice!?
_Pinky and the Brain theme song starts playing_
CoriSparks NARF
one is a genius. the other is insane... but which is which?
Was Jake Paul one of the recipients of these mini brains?
Software Man they would have to remove the dense rock in his head first
No because if he had gotten one it might seem like he actually has a brain.
that's a smart joke
Software Man it would be a significant improvement
BAZINGAAA
2:52 "about the size of a lentil." So, smaller than a pea brain.
Lentil brain
haha ;)
How are you literally everywhere
Haha pea brain, sounds like pee, I'm -4 years old
Normal Person he is literally everywhere for his love of science
What Growing Mini Brains Has Taught Us
*that we should grow big brains*
Software Man first
Software Man ;)
Or grow tiny people to put them in.
Wayne Sears Makes sense.
Big brains = possible consciousness, which creates ethical issues.
I was already living proof that mini brains could exist
Puts a new spin on the insult "Why don't you grow some brains"..
3:45
I see we’re making HEAD way on developing mini brains. Good job science!
I hope for humanities sake that ethics won't declare war on that kind of technology/sciene ...
Seriously we could potentially grow new organs "out of thin air", and give terminally ill people a real chance to survive whatever it is that threatens their life.
didjeri i understood it as, if we happen to grow brains with consciousness then should that brain have rights basically
didjeri aside from peta, ethics rarely affects science
@neo chen I'm wondering if such brains will ever be aware / conscious, or if the scientist need some "special sauce" to make them aware.
Is it even possible to be aware, without having any senses like sight; feeling pain; vision and so on.
However I think even if they're aware there should be some wiggle room to do some propper science and ultimately advance as species.
@Leylin Chase Well I'm not so sure about that, I mean stell cell research could've probably be so much further than they are right now if it weren't for those pesky ethicalists or whatever they're called lol :)
@LeFlavius_NL
I agree with you on that point!
I'm more interested into what scientist can discover by probing those artifically created brains / organs and so improving life quality altogether.
Thanks for the interesting video. Why didn't the mouse's immune system reject the human brain cells?
Probably must've had the neurons encode human antigens before injection
Also might have disabled the immune system somewhat, be that drugs or something else
its possible that alot of them did and they worked with the few that didnt
@Joseph Koester Massive amounts of failure with a very small amount of success? Yup, that sounds like science.
Probably by suppressing immune system with steroids for example.
Next time on Sci Show:Scientists make Mini Human out of organoids
Call it dark humor but when she said they were the size of a lentil I couldn't help thinking "zombie tic tacs". I'm horrible.
Sounds DELICIOUS!!!!
HOMUNCULI!!!!!
awesome video. thanks for explaining this x
Lotta folks here on CZcams have cerebral organoids.
Very interesting. Thanks, Olivia.
Awesome job!
Great concise presentation, much appreciated!👍
I think that the day we can either grow or copy (not clone, they're different) a functioning brain or something close enough to it is when the "soul" or "spirit" question is finally laid down to rest. If we can whip up a brain and that brain develops it's own agency, well I think that about settles it right? If we can whip up brain after brain and they don't really do anything that we'd consider thought, we're missing a piece to the puzzle and we haven't been looking in the right place.
Very interesting!
I particularly like that Olivia describes both the achievements and the challenges. This gives much clearer idea of the edge that research have reached and has the effect to involve the viewer (at least me) much more.
Just as a counter-example: the way many theoretical scientists describe their theories (which often are barely more than an educated guess based on complex math) as something established and almost confirmed is a bit off-putting - not necessarily in very negative way, but simply because they fail to involve the people in their field (or at best say something like: "With high-school math skills you can understand what I'm talking about with just two years of intense studying of high-maths" :)) No wonder String-theory failed to produce anything concrete yet!
Great job Olivia!
It was fun playing Soma to that part where you get access to this computer which has over a dozen people's brain-scans stored which you could launch into a simulation where they would think they're just waking up in a room after completing their brain-scan.
Everytime you launch them you kinda put them into existence and everytime you shut them off you're essentially killing an almost perfect replica of that person.
Someone could prbly do a troll video of that scene and just completely disorient and confuse the heck out of them before shutting down their simulation everytime.
So... FrankenGnome will finally be real?
It is amazing that they can do this.
So freaking cool!
There's no possible way this could go horribly, horribly wrong.
Don't let this distract you from the fact that Hector is gonna be running 3 Honda Civic's with spoon engines. On top of that he just came into Harry's and ordered 3 t66 turbo's with NOS's and a Motec System Exhaust.
Well if nutrient supply in the middle is a problem why not make them longer, like a noodle? Noodle brains!
*Cackles like Joker*
I think we're still decades off from growing a full blown conscious anything in a lab. Not counting cloning, obviously. Tho this is definitely a huge first step
Why dont they mix many organoids and make an andronoid
This is wild. Also gives new meaning to the term "pea brained".
Maybe one day science can make me a brain. I just want something to fill the void inbetween my ears
i knew some of that from hfs podcast and even read the orginal paper. when is the podcast back? i loved it
oh ....THATS A GREAT VIDEO .... ! THANKS...
I, for one, welcome our new rodent overlords.
It's gonna be Redwall all over again.
organoid is my favorite word now
The way I feel some mornings I might be better off with one of those mini-brains; it might work better than my own.
I learn many things here!😍
Oh god, that tone shift at the end of every sentence... I just picked up on this, and now I can't unhear it. 😨
Travelers welcome to the club
I just can't pay attention to what she's saying because every sentence starts like "And this one time at band camp" and turns into an annoying grind. At the end of every. Single. Sentence.
Using 3D printing nanomaterials that'll allow the arrangement of a scaffolding structure to suffice will give way for circulation of oxygenated water/nutrients that will in effect allow neural organoids to grow even LARGER to the capacity of engineering an entire brain.
Imagine how HUGE of a chunk from your brain that you can lose, and retain consciousness. It makes me wonder the size limit for concious thought, and what's spurs my interest in personal choice ethics, like veganism, vegetarianism and animal rights advocacy.
I don't think we need to worry about cerebral organoids being able to perceive sensorial input yet, since we probably don't understand enough about the sensory systems to make that work.
I personally hope that this research will allow us to repair brain damage and keep our brain healthy longer. However I do understand the ethical concerns of growing an entire human brain only for experments. The brain might not have any memories our senses, but it is still a human brain with the potential for consciousness and complex thought.
I like your pronunciation of microglia better than the one I was taught. (MI"-cro-GLI'-a)
You guys talked about this on one of the later episodes of HFS! When is it coming back?? I neeeeeeeed it!
This is the pinnacle of science.
One step closer to a DIY momotarou kit.
What Growing Mini Brains has told us...
Brains are like onions, and ogres, they grow in layers...
what?
For those who like to know more (i've made tongue organoids (mini tongues)). This technique was popularized by a postdoc who worked for Hans Clevers. He created the 1st organoid like structure (mini-guts) at the time. By now they have managed to create those organoids and used it to heal wounded guts of other mice. Also, a nice thing to note is that they have manged to create human organoids and use it to screen for drugs. For anyone still reading and wondering: czcams.com/video/oMEihKffBJI/video.html here is a 15min vid explaining it.
Implanted mini brains in mice? Do you want rats of Nim? Because that's how you get rats of Nim.
Let's implant one in our current President.
On a more serious note, I hope the research will lead to a cure to conditions like MS and Alzheimer's. My ex girlfriend suffered from the former and it was frustrating to not be able to really help her. Yes, she took the current type of medications to reduce the number and severity of the episodes, but the side effects were not pleasant. Also, it didn't really treat the underlying cause of the disease which is still not completely understood.
So much movies comes to my mind right now
I think Olivia is becoming a mad scientist.
This reminds me: R.I.P. Verne Troyer, aka "Mini Me" :(
I'm sure they made a super brain already they are always 100 steps ahead of what they choose to let us know.
Banging phrase at the end
"mini testes" how did you know my nickname?
What's really creepy is that Spy Kids actually predicted this
Now SciShow has jump scares.
Is it possible to put all the different tiny organs together and create a tiny homunculus ?
Did Olivia change que oratorial style? I somehow like it more now. It feels more paused and soft. GJ!
How can a brain with no body feel or sense much of anything? Most people probably don't think about this, but the concept of self is intrinsically linked to having a body. It may not be possible to have an individual consciousness without a body, or at the very least is would not remotely resemble what we feel as fully formed organisms with bodies.
so wait are you telling me that we could actually have those spy kids brain things in the near future?
I think we all want to know how mini-brains taste
Not as good as the real thing
culwin
Easy Zombie Delicacy.
They'll be like Chaff for zombies.
I mean... No. I wasn't thinking that until you said that.
Now i'm curious though goddamnit.
YESSSSSS!!!!! PUT 'EM IN SPAGHETTI!!!!! They could be the meatballs!!!! XD
Cool
Her: I like mini versions of things
Him pulls down pants
Him: how ya like that
What to do with the mini-brains when they advance is easy to answer. Put them in a robotic humanoid frame, and create an android.
I would think that it would be extremely unethical because in case they do become conscious they'll just be used for scientific experiments
At this point in science, we must stop hampering our progress because a few people are worried about a blob of cells.
Ethics will always limit science from further potential advancement, though they're important _and they only apply for humans_
"Researchers are making headway"
i thought you were gonna say the brain started small an just kept growing and they lost control of it
well mini brains... super mice... science is frikin weird YES I GOT IT
Human brains in...mice?
So basically it is possible to make a full normal person without a sperm and egg. Like we can't do it now, but with this it's saying one day we could do this if we wanted.
Anyone else getting a Fallout 4 vibe from that?
Wait whatttttt
"Johnny Got His Gun" scenario here maybe??
3:44 "Scientists are making headway" Sorry, can't help snickering.
Wait, I though in a HFS podcast, someone said "minibrain makes miniveins" ????
crazy
If I only had a brain... Could you maybe grow one?
Why do you feel lethargic when its raining heavily?
Interesting video. Today organic matter was found on Mars. Might a show be in order discussing the subject?
ethicists.. ruining fun and progress since the classical ages. ^^
What Growing Mini Brains Has Taught Us
*its time for mini humans*
I'm guessing this technology is similar to growing meat (as food) in a lab, except that this situation is more demanding, since functionality is an issue (as opposed to flavor and nutrition)?
I know a few people I would be happy to volunteer as subjects for brain research.
Lego Movie 2 looks bad ass.
Am I really the only one that immediately thought of Spy Kids 3 when I saw the title of this video?
Finally scientists building a mini-me
Without contact with the world through sensation they can never be any more human than a zygote.
One of the guys I work with us named Brian. He is pretty smart so I just call him Brain. Also good reference to autism. I have autism and epilepsy and if love to know more brain science of Autism, so a video on Autism and other conditions like it would be amazing. Thanks SciShow.
Maybe the mini brains can be nourished in a similar environment as a baby in the womb, so that it can grow larger 🤔
If the mini brain did have blood vessels wouldn’t it need to be connected to a mini heart to pump it
She has the coolest voice
Oh god they're going to artificially make mini people
And if the mini brains do become conscious... _how will we know?_
So eventually we’re gonna just learn how to recreate ourselves
Mini testes already exist. Just ask any BMW driver.
edmonton20084
That's not mini testes, that's mini dicks
Bmw and Audi drivers do have mini brains.
Can't wait for Frankensteins monster to become real lol
By the day our ethic debate has some answers about if there is some conscience on mini brains maybe we'll grasp mice and other lab complete animals already had one.
