He worked a day job at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory which is a couple of hundred yards from where he lives, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_Barr_(naturalist)

This story is misleading in many ways he is not as isolated as it makes out, where he lives is not that far out of town and there is a major science research station a few hundred yards from where he lives and at one stage worked they just don't show it on camera.

They do show it, but yes, "hermit" is not exactly accurate. On the other hand, it's unusual to live 45 miles from the nearest town and only have access by ski.
