Anyone who says anything bad about Mickey Redmond should be put under international watch lists. I’m dead serious he’s a human treasure.
People in Detroit didn’t like him back in the day. He said he had a back injury was not playing but was caught playing tennis at a country club.
I am dead serious.
@@davidkruse4030tennis feels a lot different than hockey in the 60-70s…
@davidkruse4030 like playing casual tennis at a country club can be compared to nhl hockey lol
When he retires, please do a broadcasting career video. I feel so lucky to have had Mickey as an announcer for the Wings for as long as I can remember.
This.
Holy mackerel. Saw the title this morning and thought the exact same thing.
There is no replacement for Mickey. The rest of the team is great too. When Ken and Mick retire, I'm sure the relaxed attitude of the broadcast team will live on through Trevor and Ozzy. Looking forward to seeing who else they add to the team. Jimmy has come a long way this year, still seems pretty nervous on air though. But his goaltending analysis is even better than Ozzys.
One thing I love about Mickey's broadcasting, he will call what the plays on the ice are. If a opposing player hasa really good play, he acknowledges. If the wings mess up or play poorly, he'll call out their play. For being a Wings homer, he's one of the best at being impartial and it's also extremely rare ina regional broadcast.
When the Wings screw up and he grunts his dissatisfaction, it's one of my favorite things in the world.
@@TheHockeyGuy It's why the Wings broadcast rates quite well. Mickey Redmond isn't afraid to show emotion and to be truthful.
A big part of him cutting back on games is that he has very severe celiac disease to the point where he'd take his own pots and pans on the road. He also lost 1/2 of a lung to lung cancer some years ago. Even after all of that he still consistently shows up for charity alumni games all over the state of Michigan and will play drop in games sometimes around Detroit.
Great point! Fox had a story during a broadcast about it and it was the first time I ever heard of Gluten and because of him and the internet I was Gluten free in 2002, he helped save my life, since no doctor I saw knew anything about it.
He even called a few Flint Firebird playoff games in the OHL. Guy is a beautician
My favorite thing Mick does in his commentary is when he just laughs at bad calls. Doesn't bother saying why it's a bad call because we all know. He just chuckles and says something like "I guess" or "Okaaayyyy"
What’s awesome is he will do that for the opposing team as well. He just hates bad officiating in general which honestly is very relatable.
Mickey is amazing. I hate socialising and listening to people talk. But I'd happily spend hours at the bar, listening to Mickey. He has made the Red Wings re-build fun even when it's been a struggle to watch.
I’m a wings fan and I enjoy mickey as a commentator he makes the games more enjoyable for me.
Agreed, and the post game stories are the best!!!!
Absolutely
He's starting to rub off on Osgood. Chris was so awkward the first couple years. Hanging out with Mickey has loosened him up a lot. I like hearing him on road games. Mickey is the GOAT.
@bartsanders1553 Yeah he was a nervous as Jimmy is now. Can't wait to have Ozzy and Jimmy together between intermission since I assume Keats is sue to retire soon too.
The first 50 goal player in Detroit Red Wings history. Even Gordie only maxed out at 49 goals.
Frank mahovlich hit 49 with the Wings, too, before being traded for Mickey
Red Wings fan here... Absolutely love Mickey Redmond.
Remember when he called Datsyuk's hit on Weber?😂
Redmond really took off with a 20 yr old Marcel Dionne as his center (setting him up for two 50 goal seasons). Kind of cool that he played with 42 yr old Gordie Howe in Mr. Hockey's last year in Detroit. And Redmond played with Jean Beliveau during Mickey's rookie season in Montreal. I remember having his hockey card from his last year in the NHL. Really short playing career - but definitely interesting.
If you ever have the pleasure of meeting him, he’s a beauty.
Bingo bango, Mickey has a ton of great quotes
Micky makes me look forward to every game he’s doing even if the Wings are down, love that man
The most beloved man in Detroit sports and everyone's Grandpa ❤
Mickey hates flying. That’s why he doesn’t go on many road trips with the team. He also has celiac disease which he has to be careful with eating out of town in restaurants.
What I really like about him is that even though he’s pulling for the Wings, he’s not a homer. He’ll even shout his frustration when there’s a bad call on the visiting team.
Let’s lift another ginger ale for Mickey!!
Mickey loves the Wings but I love when he's honest when things go against the team too. We get a questionable powerplay? He'll say so. Missed call if a Wing trips an opposing player? He'll spot that too. There's too many blind homers on some other broadcast teams that it makes me appreciate that when fans watch the Wings you can get the bigger picture of how the game is going and I might even say you learn more about how the sport is played. "If you're not cheating you're not trying" as he'll sometimes say.
He's fair, entertaining, and funny. The man is a legend and we're lucky to have him an Ken Daniels. They work so well together.
Both Mick & Ken are also great at acknowledging an opponent making a great play. If you watch a Colorado broadcast it's like they turned the mics off when an opponent does something well. The game is exciting and they do a good job of pointing it out, even if it's not always a guy in a red sweater.
They also, will interview opposing players family members if they are in the crowd at LCA, like yeah they clearly are Wings fans, but if you're watching an opposing team play in Detroit, they do a VERY fair job at being unbias. Probably the best in the Biz. Playoff Ken, Mickey Redmond are PEAK broadcasting, I pray to god that the Wings can get back into the postseason before Redmond retires.
And on top of that the Wings radio crew is just as good. Ken Kal and Paul woods!
The 2014 WC alumni game was awesome, we had my grandparents in town and he didn’t know about the game, I was like “Federov just assisted on a goal by Mickey Redmond” boy did he light up
Wouldnt be surprised if ken and mickey are the longest running commentary duo in the league. Been doing games together since the 97-98 season
Everybody loves Mickey and he is a Detroit LEGEND in the broadcast booth.
I had the pleasure to play against Mickey in an alumni game in my younger years, didn't realize the greatness I had before me at that time. He was and will always be a beauty.
Couldn't agree more. Thank goodness for Datsyuk so he could coin the "Datsyukian Deke".
Holy Mackerel! I absolutely ADORE Mickey
THG is an upload machine
Mickey has been doing color for the Wings for longer than I've been alive. He and Daniels started together as the primary pair when I wasn't even one year old and I'm honestly not ready for the day the two aren't doing the broadcasts together as the primary duo. Mickey is an international treasure honestly and it always makes me so happy to see other fans love him almost as much as Wings fans do. The day he fully retires will be a sad day for sports broadcasting.
Mickey rules
He should for sure be in the THG hall of fame, if not as a player as a commentator. First player in Red Wing history to score 50 goals, we are talking about the 3rd most successful original 6 franchise which is crazy! Also Mickey was the first Red Wing to sign a million dollar contract, played his first year with Gordie Howe who took him under his wing. Mickey Redmond is an absolute legend!
Mickey makes watching red wings games with my mom special. It seems like at least once a game, my mom or I would make a sarcastic comment, then 5 seconds later, Mickey would say almost the same exact thing over the broadcast. It feels like he's in the living room with us.
He makes watching the Red Wings lose, more enjoyable. If the hockey sucks, at least you got Mickey.
Right on HG......the Mick is the perfect compliment to Kenny Daniels, and he's given fans great entertainment during the lean "Dead Things" years.
Mickey is awesome. Hudson Bay rules, his Mickey-isms, everything - makes the Wings game, even if they are a blowout fun to watch
How lucky I am to be a wings fan growing up with Mickey, really made me a fan
I am so lucky as a Wings fan to have Mickey Redmond as a color guy. Definitely the most entertaining, his stories are awesome, gets annoyed with the Red Wings(love the passion).
Best broadcaster in hockey history.
Detroit fans were blessed for a few years. We had the Dave Strader/Mickey Redmond commentary team on Channel 4, TV 50, and PASS Sports. Strader was irreplaceable as a play-by-play guy, and Mickey has always been a blast.
Ken Daniels is good, but yeah, it took me years to get over the loss of Strader. Also, you forgot Ken Kal,.
@@PygmySurfer That's true. I used to listen to games on WJR too. I loved Bruce Martyn and Paul Woods and it took time to adjust to Kal.
@@GRChrzak Oh I forgot about them! Definitely a lot of great sports media personalities in Detroit.
We Red Wing fans are so blessed to have Mickey and Ken calling our games. I love when Mickey goes to Ozzy's for an evening at the rink and the Cabin. I also like when Mickey and Trevor demonstrate plays post game too. I know he's from Peterborough but he's a true Michigander. Thank you so much Shannon!
Holy Jumpin’! Have a few ginger ales! Mick is the best in the business!
He has been cutting back games for the last half decade or so with his celiac disease. He also can joke around that he is not on his first head of hair.
We love this man in Detroit. Seeing him out and about is just as you'd imagine. Same guy as you see on TV, loves a good time and just a great guy.
Nice to see this one, Shannon. Mickey is a Detroit icon in broadcasting. His travel agency did arrangements for away games - flight/bus, lodging, and game tickets. A natural extension for his love of the game.
He’s a Great announcer on the games he does bingo bango his signature call.
i love that guy. he seems like an amazing person. he always reminded me of my grandpa especially when he throws on a flannel jacket after every game. "holy jumpin!" he's one of the best. thanks for the video hockey guy
🐐
Mickey Redmond was also the first Detroit Red Wing to score 50 goals.
Mickey don't go on the over-night roadtrips because of his celiac disease and the trouble finding food to accomodate him on the road.
Certified legend
I don't know exactly when I really became a Wings fan, but it was sometime in the early 90s. I used to watch every Wings game on channel 50 on this tiny little TV I had, with rabbit ear antennas. I grew up listening to Mickey call Wings games, first with Dave Strader (RIP), then with Ken Daniels (we don't talk about Mike Goldberg). Truly one of the greats.
Lifting a ginger ale to Mickey, who along with Arnie Brown and Billy Collins, taught at Nick Libbett's Hockey Camp back in 1971. His shot, even at half snap, was one of the HEAVIEST I'd ever faced, and was consistently within 3" of the post. He was one of the happiest, most unassuming and funny players you'd ever want to meet Always chirping and laughing, fun was his middle name. They broke the mold when they made the Mick, and he still brings it in the broadcast booth.
Great announcers can make the experience so much better!!
Bon Uecker does Milwaukee Brewers radio and every game is a treat.
Cant forget one of his best off curse word. "Jeepers"! 🤣
He has a song, too..."Get Your Red On". Lol. Now that's talent.
Mick should DEFINITELY be in the HOF as a broadcaster. I know baseball did that where the old radio guys like Ernie Harwell, Harry Caray, and Vin Scully were inducted as broadcasters.
Once again, Shannon hits the nail on the head.
Imagine winning 2 cups in your 1st seasons then going to the "Dead things" and still got 50 goals. These are the guys everybody loves and roots for. And unbeatable as an announcer. Lovely guy.
Mickey Redmond is the best because he is not afraid to rip on the team when they suck and none of the other broadcasts are openly as critical. He went off one time when they were getting their asses kicked by the Coyotes and he used the telestrator to point out how bad their defense was. He opined that these breakdowns didn't happen on better teams.
A couple of things to clarify if anyone in the comments hasn't already, but the Mick has some sort of food allergy, I can't recall now exactly what it is, but for years and years he would miss a lot of road games from this, eventually that sort of went away (new meds?) but now that he's older he has a more relaxed schedule, which you stated earlier in the video that he earned, which I agree with. I grew up with Mick, I'm 39 and he's the only thing that has stayed the same for me lol. I remember watching on UPN50 with Dave Strader (RIP) and Mick when I was a child, I met him once at a signing where I live, great guy. I don't even want to think about the Mickyisms that I'll miss when he retires, all you have to do is take a peak over at the Tigers broadcast to see how quickly it can all go south! Luckily they have a new guy, it was getting to the point to where I would just listen to music and mute Tiger games lol
He’s my favorite for sure! Watch a lot of hockey myself and by far the best! Should be in hall for broadcasting for sure!
Unfortunately, I don't remember a whole lot about his playing career, but I always thought it was amazing that he was the first Red Wing to have back-to-back 50-goal seasons, which is one of many reasons why Mickey has always been one of my favorites. So much so that my very first personalized license plate that I ever bought is a tribute to him. Mickey has an issue with his digestive system and has to eat gluten-free meals, which is another reason why he only does home games and away games that are close to Detroit.
I love Mickey more than any man on Earth, now that my father has passed.
When he leaves us, there will be a hole that will never be filled.
Mickey was awesome with Dave Strader as well. The best announcing duo I have ever heard calling a hockey game.
I always knew him as the Red Wings announcer, but it surprised me when I saw he was the color guy for the Good Friday Massacre in 1984.
Mick was the voice of my formative years during hockey season. And during the summer I was lucky enough to be able to listen to Ernie Harwell call the Tigers games.
The man, the myth, the legend
Im a Detroit fan and i serious think he needs his jersey retired and put in the rafters but his jersey should have a plaid red and black design covering the whole jersey to signify his very well known to us in Detroit, his plaid red and black coat he ALWAYS wears.
an absolute beauty
I LOVE Mickey. My co-workers and I used to call him Mickey Redwing back in the ‘80’s.
I didnt even realize he was the guy I was having laughing fits listening to when Detroit had just that absolutely dreadful stretch. I should find those games to rewatch
Wasn't he on the Summit Series team too? Also, it makes total sense he worked at a travel agency that's perfect
My favorite Mickey memory is his laugh when Datsyuk decided to give Logan Couture ankle problems. I think I watch that clip at least once a week.
I think he was underrated as a player.; Of course scoring 50 goals is going to get you attention, but he was an outstanding player beyond his goal scoring. And scoring 50 goals for the Detroit in the Dead Wings era was a great accomplishment. With John Garrett retired, Mickey & Butch Goring are the last of the real old timers, who were players when I was still a little kid, left in the game.
I loved the Chicago vs Detroit games with Mickey and his Brother he is first class guy
At my summer job in '98 I dumped a few yards of mulch into the bed of Mickey's pickup. We talked hockey for about 2 minutes and he tipped me $5. I thought it was the best day of my life.
Always love seeing Mickey get his flowers. Couldnt agree more THG
He is great on the Red Wing broadcasts. Utterly genuine. Doesn't sugar coat anything. Freely praises players on opposing teams. Completely straight shooter although certainly rooting for the Wings.
Marcel Dionne helped Mickey Redmond and Charlie Simmer score 50 goals. Neither did much before or after playing with him. And both became broadcasters.
FRICK YEAH!👍
Mickey is an absolute treasure.
I love Mickey's stories, especially the ones about the fighting in the old days. Katie bar the door it's a Donnybrook! 😅
You had me worried that he died for a minute when I saw this video had been posted😅
For his sake Red Wings please have a good season for his sake.
Oh my God, don't even say that dude!😲
It's coming. I really think the Wings are going to surprise this season. I'm not willing to claim that they're for sure making the playoffs because the Atlantic is still so competitive, but I fully expect them to be in the hunt until the end. Yes, they still have some holes in the D corps, but Seider's a true stud #1 defenseman, and yes, they're still lacking that true top end / superstar forward, but their depth up front is pretty solid top to bottom, with a good mix of skill, defensively responsible forwards who can also score some, and physicality. It's an exciting time to be a Red Wings fan. Pretty crazy that I've been a fan for 35 years and this is the first full on rebuild I've witnessed. I think in 2-3 years they're going to be a legit Cup contender.
Thank you from Detroit.
As a penguinsfan, I have a lot of favorite color analysts and Mickey Redman is definitely one of them.
I saw him score his 2nd 50th goal at Olympia against Eddie Giacomin who never even moved.
Couldn't agree more, Mick is the best.
No complaints on Mickey, he's my favorite color man.
Was fortunate enough to meet him on draft night this year. He is even more tremendous in person! LGRW 🐙 🏒 🤘
As a redwings he is a national treasure!
IMO, he hasn't just cut back cause he's earned it. We need to enjoy every broadcast he has left in him.
A true hockey treasure.
Mickey was a smoker, and he had to have surgery for cancer. That's when he shortened his season (no away games, except FL trips :-) ), but by golly, he made it to Sweden, and that's what's good. He would roast the Wings when they were bad, like a boss. You could hear his frustration. Ain't gonna win to many games playing like that he said. He's a Detroit treasure, and we need a more.
Everybody loves Redmond!
When it rained, it poured for Redmond.
I watched so many red wings live last year just cuz of Mick won't be the same when he's gone.
oh oh he blew a tire trying to put the biscuit in the basket bingo bango he scored love the mick all time great all around person! 🤷♂️🤗👍
To me, only Peter McNab (RIP) is higher than Mickey Redmond simply because I’m an Avs fan. But Mickey is absolutely a legend and I love that he’s willing to just say what’s on his mind. So many commentators nowadays act like robots.
Ernie Harwell for the Tigers and Mickey Redmond for the Wings. Detroit's two all time best local sportscasters.
One of the best in the league!
Mickey really was a great goal-scorer and it is a shame that he had back issues that caused him to retire so early.
Mickey is #1
Out of all the NHL teams i think Detroit does the best job at keeping quality people around.
They also manage to avoid the pitfalls of other old boys clubs around the league.
Players who get a job with the org post hockey are there because they are capable, not just due to them being alumni.
It seems like a lot of the new colour guys we’re getting now are very corporate and don’t have the same passion, edge or charisma. I’m not looking for the next Don Cherry. We can do without some of the cringey stuff, but guys like Mickey, Cheech and Larscheid remind me of why I fell in love with the game in the first place in 1990. It’s about characters and storytelling. Most of those guys are wild homers, but that’s why they’re beloved by their fan bases. Sure, it’s good when they call out their own team when they screw up, but their passion for their team and the game is infectious.
I hope it's something the new guys learn with age. Osgood was a bit stiff when he started but he's better now and Jimmy Howard looked scared stiff for the first half of the season.
@@abbatoirnoises I love Ozzy. I got SUPER lucky growing up, and for some odd reason Osgood got all of his teammates to go to my dads car shop whenever they needed work done, tires. So through that Osgood became good friends with my father, and to this day, we get an annual invite to his 4th of July party.
Growing up Osgood would sign all of my Peewee hockey jerseys, sticks, and after they won the cup in the late 90's, Osgood had a Limo sent to our house in Metro Detroit, and had our family go to the bar downtown where they were all partying called "The Post", got to drink Coca Cola out of the cup, and have pictures of it. Was an amazing time period, and I'm incredibly happy Chris is still involved in the Organization. He's got a MASSIVE house out in Livonia, and has a huge Pole Barn with a hockey rink in it, and on the 4th of July they'll run a non contact, old folk Hockey game in there. He's my all time Fav wing next to Datsyuk.
Ginger ales for all! 🍻🍻🍻
Best announcer ever and I’m from Pittsburgh. Home to the second best announcer Mike Lange
