The 16 Personality Types: ISTP

  • ISTPs in the Myers-Briggs personality system rely on Introverted Thinking (Ti), Extroverted Sensing (Se), Introverted Intuition (Ni), and Extroverted Feeling (Fe). Behavioral stereotypes can be limiting and not fully explain the mental processes and motivations behind the stereotypes. In this video, we dive into the actual cognitive processes and discuss tendencies associated with each one, including cognitive loops. For ISTPs, this is a Ti-Ni loop. The hope is that the information presented will be beneficial for individuals to use when discussing ISTP relationships, careers, and workplace habits. We will also prepare you for the podcast premiering at the end of 2020. One of the episodes will be dedicated entirely to ISTPs in the education system, their learning style, and how the system can better accommodate them.

    Something else about ISTPs. We can move from obsession to obsession over time.
    Surfing might be all-encompassing, but then we get really into building hot rods, or writing. We might have multiple simultaneous obsessions. But we'll occasionally drop one and add another. I've been starting to fly fish...
    Ultimately, we're nerds, but a lot of what we geek out on has been deemed cool for some reason. So we're often not thought of as nerds.

    • @matthew3774

      Yeah we are not like those INTPs who get really deep into studying old keys or vacuum cleaners or fences or something equally mundane/nerdy

      @chimpanzee eagle I know. I had it done to me recently by a fellow ISTP, too. In person, not only on line.
      I try not to do that. It's hard to keep up with friends as life goes on, so now I feel guilty. I think I have done it by accident and not known it.
      But this was blatant. It really sucks.

    • @VTdarkangel
      @VTdarkangel Před 3 lety +6

      @chimpanzee eagle That's the NiFe demon (or shadow, depending on your preferred terminology) at work. We share certain traits with the INFJ, one of those can be the door slam. We may do it for different reasons, but it does happen and often unconsciously. I know I've done it, sometimes unintentionally. Some of the reasons that it has happened are: I no longer share anything in common, they've hurt me, or I got busy or interested in something else and just lost contact. It's not usually misanthropy. We prize self-reliance, and the trade-off for that is we are just not people focused.

    ISTP female here. Loved your video. Spot on with what you said. I crave variety in my life and it's taken some really awful admin type repetitive jobs to learn that's not were I thrive. I love to craft and to cook, and I have plenty of skill when it comes to using my hands. I'm an estate agent that deals with industrial commercial property - what I think is the perfect career for me. In my late 30's and I still need to remind myself to show affection to my family in a way that speaks to them...but I'm learning.

    One of the greatest descriptions I've heard regarding my fellow ISTPs is that given our vast capability, we can do anything "if we want". I can fix that, if I want. I can say that, if I want. I can learn that, if I want. Best part, we usually want to. Biggest thing for us, and what I've recently learned, is that having a direction is extremely important to our success. As one going through a sort of "career crisis", I feel as though I'm just this ball of energy that can be sent in all different ways but without clear direction, there is no action.
    Do what compels and you'll find it.

    Finally! 😜 Thank you. This is great.
    Why would anyone not want to accept being an ISTP? 😕 It's not always the easiest life but I wouldn't want a different one.
    Thank you for getting past the carpenter stereotype!
    Some people love that work, especially high end, pretty stuff. But that's not what every ISTP enjoys. And while I've been a first responder, my eyesight precluded a real career (ditto for flying planes).
    Finding alternatives that don't come from children's books, is a real boon for ISTPs.
    Fixing stuff is our 'love language." Push back enough and we feel rejected or even hated.
    Interview sounds intriguing (answered your written questions in Personality Cafe DM a few weeks ago).
    I don't do Facebook any more. It wasn't healthy for me. Ti got into pointless debates and alienated people, and Se turned full-blown narcissistic, with social media. It just felt so good to stop.

  • @barrydworak
    @barrydworak Před 4 lety +12

    Oh... one more thing I've struggled with without even knowing it for a long time.
    With Fi so weak, authenticity is something we don't think about.
    This can bite us if we spend too much energy on other people's love languages, feelings, etc. One day we wake up and think, "Where the hell am I in this?"
    And we're pissed off.
    We can get pretty destructive to relationships, jobs, etc. if we get to this point.
    This is important to know and to balance out. It's great to learn other love languages but not at the expense of our Selves.

      But we do think about it, its very crucial.
      "And we're pissed off. "
      And that is why authenticity is very important because we dont wanna help fake people with fake emotions.
      The problem is just, that is hard to tell the difference until you learn the difference

      @jenluckhardt6302 Před 4 lety +4

      @@barrydworak I myself am an INFJ, so I'm not exactly sure why ISTPs wouldn't have many friends, as I don't see life from your perspective. From what I can see, they are quite aloof, can be quite blunt, their humour can be subtle and clever and even stabbing. They don't really give off an "I want to be friends!" kind of vibe. I quite like these things about them, but a great number of people (the more sensitive feelers) probably wouldn't appreciate these traits.
      To be honest, I feel ISTPs could have lots of friends if they chose to. Let's get real, though. Friends take work and can be overly-demanding for time and attention.
      In my own opinion, though, an ISTP friend is a friend worth holding on to.

      You're right, it is a shame. Perhaps you can think of it a different way. There are a lot of people in this world content with their drama and happy to live blindly in their ignorance, narrow-mindedness, and irrationality. I couldn't see ISTPs deeply appreciating friends like that, and there are an enormous amount of people fitting that description. It's going to be quality of friends above quantity for ISTPs.

    When I was younger, I always wanted to go out and have fun and just experience things. And now I'm in my early 20s, I've started to sit down and think about the meaning of things...still very much fact based though . And now I need to actually put my Se to use, to actually test if my theories are right or not...

    I had to do a Myers Briggs for Commanding General Staff College in the Army. They typed me as an INTJ. But every time I see a well done video on ISTP, like this one, I realize how wrong that typing was. Because I was an academic, jock, outdoorsman, and tinkerer, I dismissed Myers Briggs as a horoscope for educated people. And since most descriptions of ISTP are "mechanic," that didn't fit either. Now that I have learned more about the functions, I am beginning to think that Myers Briggs might have a little truth to it, and I am probably an ISTP. Your description hit the nail on the head.
