Great video, the sideboard guide is excellent. As someone just getting into pioneer it's really helpful to understand why certain cards are in the sideboard and when to side in which card. I've been running a similar list on Arena (in Explorer) I was just wanting to know your thoughts on Tranquil Frillback and Arasta as additions/alternates in the sideboard. Arasta is for Phoenix and/or other spell slinger decks, and Frillback is a bit of a utility; graveyard removal, ench/art removal, life gain.
Arasta is a fine option. It can be good against Phoenix, but trading for a single Lightning Axe, even if leaving behind a 1/2 spider, puts you down tempo a bit. When playing it, Arasta was more effective as an anti Mono Red card more than an anti-Phoenix card. I think it’s entirely possible that Arasta is correct to include. For Tranquil Frillback, flexibility is nice, but there’s no matchup where multiple modes are at a premium. The list already runs the most efficient rate of each of those effects: Hearse for graveyard hate, Obstinate Baloth for life gain, and Pick Your Poison for disenchant. Furthermore, these all come in for non-overlapping matchups (with the exception of matchups where Pick Your Poison’s primary role is as a Plummet). I am highly skeptical that Tranquil Frillback is correct to include (in the current metagame). Finally, for both of these, a significant demerit is that they cost >=3 mana but don’t have >=4 power, as reductive as that sounds. Every creature slot that doesn’t have 4 power reduces the snowball potential of drawing cards with Kiora/Trailblazer, which in one of the primary reasons to play the deck.
@@bobbyfortanely Thanks so much for your reply. The points you've made are kind of where I was leaning on these cards. I've run Arasta a few times against phoenix and both times its been picked off, leaving just the 1/2. Frillback I was one I wasn't sure about. It seems like it could be good to be able to pick off specific artifact/enchantment, instead of your opponent sacrificing one, but needing the 4 mana to do so, and not drawing a card or adding that much devotion, feels like a bit of a drag
Another great video! Love the sideboard guide
Hi Bobby! Are you not interested in siding in any Stone Brains against UW Control?
I could see doing that. Elves are pretty weak. You could go down 5 more elves to just 1 elf, and additionally bring in 3 Baloth and 2 Stone Brain. I used to bring in Stone Brain during the Karn days.
Hey Bobby! I was playing this deck on Area, there is no access to Oath of Nissa. I ran a Goldvein Hydra instead and it won me at least 2 games. Is this something I should be considering? I was thinking running one in the main and 1 in board (I dont own an Emerakul). I would love to know what you think.
The 1 Oath of Nissa is very replaceable. Right now I’m testing a basic Forest in its spot, and also main deck Skysovereign or main deck Cityscape Leveler. The Emrakul in the sideboard is also not super important and also $80 in paper. Running a 1/1 split of Goldvein Hydra sounds fine to me. That card hits hard, and your opponent will loathe pointing a removal spell at it.
@@bobbyfortanely You think the Hydra should come out of the board, inn the Emerakul spot?
@@bobbyfortanely And what are you taking out of the baord for the MD Leveler? I LOVE the thought of it in the main.
Tail Swipe in the mirror? 2 opps on leagues tried it and worked for them (they won)
I’m dubious, as I have a hard time seeing it better than focusing on trying to advance your own plan. I’ll try it though.
Have you experimented with Kenrith's Transformation at all? It gives devotion and cantrips. It comes in off Storm (without triggering ward!). You can find it off Invasion. It's a very clean answer to Vein Ripper and Sheoldred.
You made a compelling case. I hadn’t thought about it like that. It makes more sense now, since I heard about MJ playing it but not the reasoning. I’ll give it a shot.
Great Video. Just put this deck together and was looking for something like this. Thanks
I think there's a mistake in the SB guide. For the Amalia match up, it says to board in 3 Pick Your Poison. I think it's supposed to be 3 Tail Swipe
Fixed
Perfect timing for today's RCQ. Thanks Bobby.
The one card that is truly great against Amalia is Grafdigger's Cage, don't know if this deck can run it because of how it affects Storm the Festival, but that is one card that I would look to try against that deck.
I had been thinking about trying that as well. Maybe I’d shave some Storm the Festivals when sideboarding for Storms.
Love your content, great video and congrats on the results! In the interest of the learning experience, @1:19:41 your turn 5, wasn't this a missed lethal? You have access to plenty of mana, you can flip the Ulvenwald, give the team haste and swing for 34 damage, with OP tapped out. Instead you end up giving the OP a land from the Boseiju on the Legion Extruder line which open up their out of Shrapnel Blast killing the Ulvenwald during activation; though you have the mana to double activate anyways.
I’m glad you like the content 😊! In this spot, we’re in my post combat main phase. I was out of spells to cast in main phase 1, and I drew the Ulvenwald Oddity by attacking the Invasion of Ixalan with my Outcaster Trailblazer (which drew 2 cards).
@@bobbyfortanely Derp. I knew I was missing something; I shouldn't try and watch two videos at once :P
Do you think this version of the deck is harder, easier or similar in difficulty level piloting to the old Karn version?
Probably easier than the Karn version, mostly because Karn was a 16-way modal spell, although the current build has tougher sideboarding choices. Comboing with the old version was unintuitive, but was a teachable skill.
Love your CONTENT, erasy Subscribr for me. One question. Round 4 second game. You have leyline, 2 forests, and just played a Nykthos. It should be 4 mana, but you had 5 and were able to pay for the spell pierce. What am I missing ?? (This occured at 1:13:59).
Invasion of Ixalan provides 1 devotion
Yes, as @@I_LOVE_AZORIUS described, Invasion of Ixalan (represented on my opponent’s side) gives 1 devotion. The layout on MTGO makes this difficult to notice. This also easy to miscount in the Green mirror, when your invasions are on their side and their invasions are on your side.
Any chance of an updated sideboard guide in the future? 💚

great commentary and explanations for your choices. you got a new subscriber
The green videos are awesome thank you so much.
Love the thoughts as you play through your turns. Narration is what a lot of MTG videos lack, and this was great. Thanks!
I’m glad you love it. I’m trying to make the style of video that I want to watch more from others.
I like Baloths and Tail Swipes against red.
Nice trophy! Have you already tested flipped polukranos over ostinate baloth? Should be easier to flip, with white mana from trailblazer or guildpact, and can come one turn earlier over the baloth saving more than 4 life probably if casted on curve (obv poly is worse against monoB and exction event) And all minor upside (like discounting boseiju, or makes lair of hydras token generator)
That’s a fair point: being a mana cheaper might be worth 4+ life. I’ll consult with my green-playing peers. I have noticed that 4-drops are slightly better in a Leyline world, since Leyline + Nykthos can cast a 4-drop on turn 3 even if all your elves get answered on turns 1 and 2.
Been thinking about buying into green or not for the rest of the season think this video is a sign 😂
It's relatively cheap all things considered, just be prepared for absolute suffering against amalia lol
One of my favorite things about Leyline is it enables 1 landers with elves/nykthos/Leyline to function because it lets your nykthos cast the elf or Oath.
Now we need a new google spreadsheet with sideboarding tech for new monogreen :)
Literally checked yesterday for more of your content, playing green this weekend
Good luck this weekend!
Been looking forward to this!
Would love to see more content on your thoughts of the evolution of the deck, and how you feel about the white splash for Elesh Norn, etc.
Cant you win the match 1 game 3 line through a push once they let ripper resolve? (If they had a push they needed to respond to ripper by pushing bloodtithe) Hold priority Activate Bloodtithe on reflection (18) Response copy ripper Reflection dies (14) Crew Bankbuster Attack (4) Vein ripper dies (0) Pushing the Bankbuster is the same amount of damage, so they still die
Now THAT is a big brain play! 🧠 You’re right, once the Vein Ripper is on the battlefield, you can immediately force the entire sequence. Good catch!
That activate kiora to target trespasser to discard baloth line was 💋
You’re great at discussing your plays but please stop saying optionality and just say option. Pretty please?
Thanks for the constructive feedback. This is a good callout. There’s basically never a reason to say optionality over option, and I wasn’t really aware that I was doing it.
Probably the deck could be improved. Leyline feels like a win more (sometimes win on the spot card). Cityscape leveler should be in the deck from game1, with 19 mana we can cast leveler->destroy Cav->put on top oddity and draw it with kiora/trailblazer -> cast oddity and flip it (unlucky players mill oddity with cav most of the times)
Bobby please activate your Windows
That’s Zax’s screen.
Loved the video. Helped a lot 🥰
I have been having some success with smugglers surprise and worldspine wurm in green devotion
So glad this is back; looking forward to all the NBC lists
I’ve waited for this for a LONG time! Time for popcorn
IT'S BAAAAAAAACK <3 Storm into Cav into Nykthos into Storm...
Mono Green is back
at 1:33:51 what if we play archfiend first, shoot the wildgrowth walker with sorin. they lose 6 total going to 8. It makes any block or no block lethal while having push backup for a chord.
Good catch! I agree, I think that this is definitely the right play.
Kinda wild not to double loot with Fable on the turn the Amalia opponent telegraphs Chord of Calling, I think that is a compulsory double discard. Probably the tapped land.
Also in that matchup I think you kill Amalia with the push so he does not Explore and then fling a creature to the Wildgrowth Walker
I agree with both of your plays. I think that they’re both clearly correct. Good catches, much appreciated!
When I used to play Rakdos Mid, I used to sideboard out Bloodtithe Harvester to make their Fiery Impulses weaker and I used to keep Duress and Reckoner Bankbuster. Is this sideboard strategy just wrong against Phoenix nowadays with Rakdos Vampires? I kinda think Leyline is a really terrible card. I'm really struggling against that MU. Cheers
I have not tested that yet, but I will at your recommendation. I’ve been somewhat happy with Hearses in that slot. There likely needs to be some form of graveyard interaction, otherwise my experiences has been eventually getting overwhelmed by Treasure Cruises, regardless of what their postboard threat configuration is.
@@bobbyfortanely Hearse used to be worse before bc there was many more Abrades/ Artifact Hate going around. I think Phoenix players used to hate the Mind rot more, but another 3 CC card in the deck is a deckbuilding constraint.
great vid as always im only halfway through, but round 3 game 2 your first thoughtseize was for ledger shredder when you have fatal push in hand to answer it , i think i would have gone with picklock pranster since they already have 2 ways to bin the first phoenix, just curious to get your thoughts! amazing plays, im learning a ton!
Hmmmm that’s a really good point about the two discard outlets. I suspect that my reasoning was preserving an answer for a drawn Shredder or Young Pyromancer, but maybe that doesn’t make much sense given their hand composition. Good call.
Wondering if you'd still use Boros Convoke on the upcoming RC's and what would be a new inclusion
I have not played Boris Convoke recently, although its position has gotten much better now that Amalia and UW Control are somewhere in popularity slots 6-10 rather than 1-5. Frank Karsten had an article about it on CFB maybe 2 weeks before OTJ released, and that’s the most recent high-quality content I’ve seen about the archetype.
I guess those archfiend are very good in the mirror and phoenix. But if the meta is varied or more aggro, wouldn't it make sense to play other four drops? What are your thought on bankbusters in the main instead of the dusk legions?
The four drop is certainly metagame-dependent. I can see most combinations of four drops making sense depending on what you expect. Bankbusters main makes sense, especially since Waste Not is so popular. Dusk Legion Zealot is such a mopey card, but the reasoning for it is making Sorin better in fair games and maximizing the odds of Sorin+Vein Ripper. I have also been thinking about that Rakdos Bronco deck that eschews the Vampire package for other card advantage.
Love your deep analysis of each match!! ❤ Happy to see you active in CZcams again! Amazing content as always!
Hey bob, i use kalitas, what do you think?
I like Kalitas as well, both against ground-based aggro decks and small-creature value decks. I had a postboard recent game against an Insidious Roots deck where I had turn 3 Sorin with an option to put in either Vein Ripper or Kalitas and I went with Kalitas. My opponent then played Tyvar and returned a hasty Priest of the Forgotten Gods, which would’ve been able to easily answer a Vein Ripper, but couldn’t answer Kalitas since I could sacrifice any zombie tokens if they activated their Priest. I think cast Path of Peril on turn 4 and they scooped 😂
I’m really impressed with your commentary and clarity. Your explanations really helped me understand the different lines to take. Keep up the great work.
Great video, thank you fot sharing. Very helpful
Love the content man, always learn a lot from you.
Thank you for the vid Bobby. I am back in the Pio streets and great to hear your insight into the format again. I especially found the discussion about Liliana vs lotus helpful. I knew it was good vs lotus, but did not fully appreciate. Was very surprised at your keep of 6 with Liliana being your first play, but your explanation helped convince me. Loved the excitement to play dross t3 vs monog lol "Long pauses are good for me" should be on a t-shirt
