What about boseiju your own oath of nissa at 2:50 to cast cavelier in the following turn 4 .
    Same at 7:30

    • @bobbyfortanely
      @bobbyfortanely  Před 11 měsíci

Unfortunately, Boseiju can only target your opponent’s permanents. This comes up especially in the mirror, when you’re forced to Pithing Needle everyone’s Karns, but only your opponent’s Boseijus have the ability to end the Needle lock.
I’ve included the Oracle text of Boseiju below for ease of access.
      Boseiju, Who Endures
      Legendary Land
      {T}: Add {G}.
Channel -- {1}{G}, Discard Boseiju, Who Endures: Destroy target artifact, enchantment, or nonbasic land *an opponent controls.* That player may search their library for a land card with a basic land type, put it onto the battlefield, then shuffle. This ability costs {1} less to activate for each legendary creature you control.

Hi Bobby, what do you think about the re-inclusion of god pharaoh statue instead of mightstone in some versions of the deck?? Thanks for your content

    • @bobbyfortanely
      @bobbyfortanely  Před rokem +3

For starters, I think everyone should run whatever Karn-board sparks the most joy: twitter.com/BobbyFortanely/status/1665880701541941248
Although to answer your specific question: I personally would only run God-Pharaoh's Statue if I expected one of the two following decks to have significant metagame share: Izzet Phoenix or Bring to Light decks (Niv to Light and Omnath to Light).
Against those two decks, it is uniquely powerful in its ability to shut their game-plan down in a way no other card can. However, against most other decks, a comparable expenditure of mana from Karn will also lock up the game.
The specific failure case with GPS that I want to avoid is the following: Karn is my only action card, I play GPS, my opponent topdecks a land which allows them to play a single spell to clear my Karn (whether that’s removing a blocker or burning Karn directly), and then I draw only mana sources but no action every turn for the rest of the game.
My lived experience is that GPS fails in this aforementioned manner sufficiently often, and has sufficiently low value-above-replacement in games where I’m extremely ahead, that I haven’t included it in my sideboard this calendar year. My one expectation to this was an RCQ where 20% of the room was on Phoenix, so I slotted it in for that one event.
In summary: I think it’s a justifiable inclusion, although I haven’t felt the need to play it for a while.

Question regarding this play at 29:15 , I understand the untap with kiora but what is the reasoning to reuse the nykthos there? My thought was to just untap it with kiora then storm. If we hit any 3 Devotion card + a land or kiora we can recast the storm. Usually, I get understand tapping it since we can hit another Nykthos, but 2 of them are in the grave already.
I'm just asking because in case I missed something and not to nitpick. I love the videos and have been learning a lot!

    • @bobbyfortanely
      @bobbyfortanely  Před rokem +4

Thank you for respectfully asking a specific and actionable question. If I’m being 100% honest, this was mostly an intuition play, but I’ll break it down into its component parts, and together we can figure out whether this was a misplay, a judgment call, or even just the correct play.
First, let’s start with the deck composition:
      8 elves
      10 ggg cards
      4 karn
      4 kiora
      4 storm
      4 oath
      4 wolfwillow
      1 cityscape leveler
      2 lair (tapland)
      4 nykthos
      15 untapped lands
And now, let’s update that with the 36 cards left in my library. I haven’t mulliganed or Oath-ed this game, so my remaining cards are:
      3 Elves
      4 GGG cards
      3 Karn
      2 Kiora
      3 Storm
      4 Oath of Nissa
      2 Wolfwillow Haven
      1 Cityscape Leveler
      2 Lair (tapland)
      1 Nykthos
      12 single-green-producing untapped lands
Class 1: Individual cards I can Storm into that keep me alive through a brick from my opponent:
      3 Elves
      4 GGG cards
      2 Kiora
      1 Nykthos
Class 2: Individual cards I can Storm into that keep me alive through a brick from my opponent, but are much better at fulfilling that role if I activate Nykthos first:
      3 Karn
      2 Wolfwillow Haven
4 Oath of Nissa (but only if it finds a relevant card)
Class 3: Individual cards I can Storm into do not matter as game pieces for keeping me alive through my opponent’s next turn:
      3 Storm
      1 Cityscape Leveler
2 Lair (tapland) [although note that Lair is still good if I find it along with a relevant game piece, as this allows me to threaten massive chunks of damage on future turns]
And then there’s the 12 single-green-producing untapped lands, which count as relevant game pieces only if I don’t tap Nykthos first AND hit a triple green card to flashback Storm
So to get back to your immediate question, my first-order heuristic is that I wanted to maximize the number of individual cards I could hit that allowed me to beat my opponent having nothing. By Nykthos-ing first, I go from 10 cards that keep me alive though nothing to 15 + 4 more that give me a redraw, (or 82.5% -> 94.6% if we ignore the oaths, when looking at the hypergeometric distribution of finding >=1 copy of any among X hits from 5 looks at 36 cards).
So that’s my first pass of how I thought about this. I wanted to maximize the number of relevant game pieces I could hit from the first Storm, without forcing myself to take an untapped land over a potentially more-relevant game piece.
There’s 3 more considerations here: 1) how do I expect the game to play out when I flashback the Storm? 2) can I beat a removal spell?, 3) can I beat a Thalia’s Lieutenant?
For 1) how do I expect the game to play out when I flashback the Storm, the answer is I expect to find 2 more creatures, which will give me enough blockers to send 2 big creatures at my opponent every turn until the game ends. In order to do that, I would ideally like to convert my only copy of Storm into 4 relevant game objects. However, if one of those game objects is an ordinary untapped land, then I’m not really making progress towards that objective, as I’ll have to leave back more blockers and possibly only be able to attack with 1 creature per turn.
For 2) can I beat a removal spell?, to do that I need to produce 2 blockers on specifically this turn. If I’m banking on hitting GGG card plus untapped land, then I’m allowing myself a slightly higher chance of producing 2 blockers this turn, but at the cost of decreasing the number of valid hits on the first Storm, and forcing myself to potentially prolong the game by many turns from not being able to attack with as many creatures right away.
For 3) can I beat a Thalia’s Lieutenant?, I can’t accomplish that if one of my takes on the first Storm is one of the 3 remaining Karns. This is because my opponent could play Thalia’s Lieutenant, grow their team, use Hopeful Initiate to destroy the Haywire Mite that I would’ve gotten with Karn (I gain 2 life), but then they attack with their team (including a Hopeful Initiate that would grow by another 1 via Training), and now all their creatures are 3 power to my 3 life and I have 1 fewer blocker than they have attackers. This is one of the biggest reasons to activate Nykthos first. If I don’t Nykthos first, then the only relevant play I can get (Haywire Mite) gives my opponent outs, whereas if I have more mana floating, then I can kill one of their creatures and deny them that out.
Taking the sum total of the book written above, I think that the overriding consideration here is giving between 5 and 9 additional outs to survive on the first Storm outweighs the potential of immediately flashing back the Storm. Storm will produce 4 game pieces, and I think that I (barely) have enough time that I would rather maximize the chance to have them all be relevant game pieces, rather than force myself to take a Forest.

If you check out my "How to Reliably Defeat UW Control" at czcams.com/video/YlIA37fNwLM/video.html , I play a total of 32 matches against UW Control, and 3 of those matches are against UW Lotus. The timestamps of those 3 matches in that video are in my comment response to a user named mekanator108 (which has some additional detail about the matchup). I will reproduce the timestamps for those matches below, but clicking on them won't work since it's for a different video. I hope this helps.
