I've spent more time in Doha than Dubai, but as a solo female traveller I have always felt safe in both places. As you say, people are respectful of each other. There's nobody openly drunk or shouting or being creepy (except that one Eastern European taxi driver who tried to convince me to marry him for immigration 🧐 ) and I've walked a lot in the evenings without worries. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Doha seemed to have more "normal life" options than Dubai, like affordable and efficient public transit and malls where the middle class goes, where it's not all high-end shops. The last time I checked, though, Qatar doesn't have as many visa options as Dubai and they are still mostly employer-driven.

I was brought up in Manchester. Loved my childhood in the UK. Went to college in the US. Stayed in the US. Been here over 30 years. I've toyed around with the idea of returning to the UK but things just seem to be getting worse year after year. The negativity, the weather & the drinking culture just seem like a complete drag. Not the place I remember.

I think you make a few good points. For me, I see growing discontent and apathy with the young people in the UK. They are giving up hope. They can't afford a house so will become rent slaves, they can't save so they take on debt. They're paying the highest taxes since WW2 but infrastructure is failing and falling apart. Schools, Police, Roads, NHS are all falling apart. Everyone must be wondering where their taxes are going. The middle and working classes are losing assets to the wealthy at rates not seen since Victorian times. To believe in Capitalism, young people need to belive the can accumulate capital. This is not happening in the UK, so why should they stay there? The UK is a great country if you're in the elite and can dodge taxation and hoard assets. (Look at Sunaks wife for a good example). But if you're not rich or in a position of power to influence the rich. There really is not a lot left in the UK.

One thing I notice in England is a kind of blinkering going-on. There is an invisible cordon put around talking about the actual direction we are taking. I make a point of asking the simple question: 'In your estimation, will Britain be a better place or a worse place in five years?' No prizes for guessing what the 100% reply is.

I left London in 1999. It was very expensive and hard to get ahead even then. UAE is good because its income tax free. But you will really be treated like a second class citizen by the locals.

If you live in a decent affluent area in the UK you are fine. In that case the weather barely affects you because your surroundings are clean and pleasant.. walking down a clean neat pavement where residents keep the houses and gardens beautiful is nice regardless of overcast or rainy weather. However living in an opposite area which is full of immigrants and littered pavements and seeing spit and dog faeces on the road while it’s raining and overcast is definitely NOT GOOD. That’s when you start hating the weather for sure. This is why Britain in the 70’s to 90’s was a happier place. People looked after their areas. Excess immigration has been the downfall. However I always say, if you know you can’t escape the UK, at least move to an area in the UK that is even 30% more decent than your current area, as that will make a great difference. And if you can’t do that, instead of complaining start taking action and work toward making your area and your house nicer.

So much hyperbole and incorrect information. For one since Brexit the UK has grown about as much as France and more than Germany, similar to before Brexit so “several %” is a bogus claim which is often cited as gospel truth. Many of the other factors are a Europe wide/global phenomenon. Immigration is high so people want to come here, many of my freinds are from HK / Japan and really enjoy living in the UK, it’s green and beautiful with world class music, comedy and sport. Don’t believe all this negativity! ❤
