Dayum....I almost pulled the trigger then started reading about the firmware woes. Is there no "high end" drive that's reputable, affordable and without issues that have to be fixed by firmware? I don't trust the Samsung 990 Pro, now this Crucial T500 is stigmatised. I need a clear winner without BS. Hynix P41? It's costing a lot right now :( EDIT: I am still considering this T500 because of this review of thermals. One other thing, someone else mentioned, the TBW is a little low. *confused* EDIT: It's weird reading reviews online like on Amazon claiming the drive gets hot, has poor performance, or outright failing. I don't know, but after initial 100% confidence in TechTesters reviews, I now know 100% to also read elsewhere + reviews because the constant praise of Samsung 990 Pro, and now putting this Crucial T500 drive at the top is frankly a little irritating - how can they take top spots with the issues they're having? GRR.. The world's messed up. Everything sucks. Google. Apple. Humanity is ill. WAKE UP PEOPLE. hahaha good day y'all.

990 pro / t500 / p41 plat are all top tier. Buy the one with a good price or pick the brand you feel confident in. Just remember any drive can break so no matter your choice you always need backups.

@@TechTesters P41 2TB took my money. It actually ended up costing exactly the same (as the 990 Pro 2TB with Heatsink, which I returned today). Hopefully the small cooling system on this mini PC will suffice. I had one brief encounter with Hynix before circa 2020, and I wondered why this relatively unknown brand (to me anyway) was in a pretty expensive laptop. I've done some quick Googling earlier today to find that they're a pretty big deal now. Apparently Hynix is the 2nd largest memory chip maker after Samsung. Intel sold its SSD business to them in 12/2021. In turn, Hynix formed a separate subsidiary Solidigm who - according to my cursory searching - make enterprise-class SSDs. A little exerpt: "Originating from the sale of Intel’s NAND and SSD business, Solidigm became a standalone U.S. subsidiary of semiconductor leader SK hynix in December 2021." This is all very encouraging stuff. Having Intel's heritage is inspiring confidence and gives us consumers a solid brand to turn to as an alternative to the Samsung giant. Would be (not so) hilarious and ironic if the drive fails on me :) But my feeling is very good about this drive, whereas with Samsung it was somehow uneasy right from the beginning (I know, it's subjective, what "feelings" have to do with it? :D) Solid advice regarding backups. I admit I suck at it. These days, drives are getting really big and fill up quick and backing them up is expensive (but it's still no excuse not to back up to the cloud, there are cheap options with crazy amount of storage out there).

  • @AllGlorytoGodMoojiJesusBuddha

Long rant. Late comment and all, but I have lost faith in Samsung. I am not a pro or anything, but I've had nothing but trouble with a 2TB Heatsink model. Mine was made 2024/02 and came with the latest firmware. My issues with it? 1) Samsung Magician software 7.3 and up REFUSES to work. It's pathetic how it doesn't tell you why. I've tried on Windows 11 and then Windows 10, with the same issue. Granted, I used ShutUp10 anti-privacy tool to disable tonnes of stuff, and when I suspected it might have been my messing about, I reverted everything and still no joy. I also used Windows 10 (via USB stick) to see if it's a Windows 11 issue - nope. Reports online say that a LanManServer service must be running - it is/was; that's not the issue. I kept downgrading from 8.1, to 8.0, to 7.3 until finally 7.2 worked. This is what I am supposed to do with a behemoth brand like Samsung? Combined with the issues online about failing drives, I have lost all respect for this brand; my intuition tells me they're up to something and I don't trust them now at all. I am returning my drive today. To add more to the annoyance (and this is partially my mistake), the Heatsink drive is massive and doesn't fit in my Mini PC. Okay, I thought I'll get an external NVME case and just use it as a quick 2TB external drive. There ARE NO external cases that adequately enclose and protect this drive (again, partially my mistake for not checking). But Samsung should be maybe stating this clearer? But I am a battler - so I thought since the heatsink is nice and chunky, I'll just use the circuit and the cable from the NVME enclosure and use it for storage when neatly placed near the PC (with a view to get a proper PC built with a motherboard that fits this SSD). I had a few BSODs (okay, let's put it down to chance and possibly due to using Windows To Go). The issue that FINALLY made me want to return the drive: Copying files to the drive via this USB-C enclosure (Realtek chip FWIW) initially seemed awesome, I even excitingly exclaimed at how fast it is and was super happy for a moment. Then I started copying a 90GB Acronis Image file onto it, and at 20% it hung. It started freezing the system periodically (mouse, keyboard, everything; but only for a few seconds at a time). I tried copying a folder with lots of smaller files later, and it was stuck at 0%. The drive in the enclosure basically stopped responding. I had to wait maybe 10 minutes for the OS to calm down after cancelling the file copy operation. Total Commander reported "Semaphore timeout" - yikes. So I put the drive into mobo's NVME, leaving the case partially open (since it won't fit) with an external fan blowing on it: copying everything no problems; repeated multiple times, thrashed it manually - no problem. So the last test was to put the other 500GB NVME drive I had in the same NVME enclosure the 990 PRO was having issues in, and after 1 hour or so of thrashing, there were NO problems. Common denominator? 990 PRO. I've since found reddit posts online (as old as 1 month ago) of people reporting random issues and BSODs. I shouldn't need to have everything perfectly set up for this drive for it not to work right out of the box. I shouldn't need to use the Magician Software to set it Maximum Performance (as people suggested it might fix the issues; well, some said they're still having problems, so a red herring probably). It's too temperamental or just dodgy and something tells me Samsung is up to no good. I don't trust them. I don't trust them after how they've handled the drive failures. I tried to call their support and the main call centre was not trained on SSDs and told me to call on Tuesday (today) - a number in the Netherlands - would that be you Nada? :) hehe. I also heard reports about them using more wattage due to turbo write (really not a problem for most, but this little Beelink EQ12 I have, has a tiny PSU, its CPU is 6 TDP!!). FINALLY: I am also pissed off that Magician wouldn't recognise the drive when inside NVME enclosure. I had to jump through hoops to install Windows To Go on a USB stick (needed to image a small SSD I had to free it up for this purpose), while the empty 990 PRO was inside the NVME slot, with the PC case partially open. Why? I wanted to ensure the firmware is up to date because of SAMSUNG'S crappy firmware in the past and the distrust they created. I wanted 0 bytes written to the disk until I ensured the firmware is the latest. IT WAS, but there should have been some sort of indicator on the box or a way to check the firmware version with a serial number? The other firmware update process whereby you have to download an ISO file, well, that area of Samsung's website is very limited and looks like it just hosts the firmware ISO that fixes the early wear issue from last year - why would I waste my time trying that, and risking screwing things up even more? It seemed unclear if that process would even tell me that my firmware is newer (although it probably would, I guess). Samsung have played fast and loose with customers' trust and have taken them for FOOLS. There's NO WAY I am buying anything Samsung. They can shove this ugly heatsink and this strange SSD where sun don't shine. I have several Samsung SSDs, including 970 EVO Plus NVME, 850 PRO SATA 2.5" and another similar drive, and another M2 SATA drive - all working perfectly, but that's where my marriage to Samsung SSD ends. I got this on a deal from Amazon, and hesitated returning it because it seemed like a really good deal. I wonder if it's due to people having a massive buyer's remorse - especially after reading horrible reports about these SSDs online, and for hitting a brick wall with Samsung Magician not working which means they can't alleviate their fears about firmware issues. I want to add that when I got the package, the drive was not popped into its slot within the box, it fell out and protruded out of the box, so the box came a little bent (heatsink is bulky ugly triangular shape), and there must have been some unnecessary pressure on the drive during transit/storage due to it not being snuggly tucked into its slot in the packaging. They couldn't even get the packaging right. It's also so easy to undo the sticky tape on the box, that you can't tell if it was opened by someone before or not - I am doing just that, carefully sealing it with the original tape which is like 2x1cm. Not that it matters, thankfully I got mine from Amazon which won't ask me any questions. I just hope some poor customer won't be sent this drive!!!! AVOID.

It's also worth looking at a company's track record with regards to customer service and whether or not they learn from their mistakes. Both MSI and Asus ROG have developed terrible reputations for their customer service while Valve is known for being very customer-friendly. Obviously, any company can change and improve, but just like you shouldn't buy a product based on what it promises to offer in the future, it's unwise to buy something from a company known for bad CS based on their promises to turn things around.

I don't see a problem with hardware at all the problem seems to be optimization everyone is making games for AMD and invidea, Intel ARC is still brand new and is not optimized yet. Even AMD isn't fully uptimized AMD driver updates have broken games that have been around forever Luke skyrim fallout 4 and falloutnv. I actually like Intel is trying to take on AMD in the APU market they just clearly need more optimization

Hi, may I have your opinion on what you would choose between this monitor and AW3423DWF for gaming if they were at the same exact price and if you didn't take into account that the 38'' needs a better GPU because of the extra pixels?

Hello. First of all, your videos are really informative and helpful. Second, I would like to ask you regarding the durability of the Gigabyte cards. In the past Gigabyte cards have been reported to have QC issues. There were numerous instance of previous gen Gigabyte cards having stability issues as well as cracking. What's your opinion on the latest 4000 series cards from Gigabyte? Are they having any such issues that were reported earlier?

I ordered one of these, specifically the Asus rog strix model, and returned it for a 7900 xtx they were the same price and the AMD card blows it out of the water. Kinda sad how inflated Nvidia cards are nowadays, coming from someone who has owned them for over 15 years.

I'm thinking of purchasing a crucial ssd, and I know you said the x8 is good.. does anyone know anything about the x9 model? is that any good, or is it worse?

Working on an updated video on this. X10 pro is great, X9 Pro is decent too. Basic X9 is more of an entry-mid level performer off the top of my head

@@TechTesters ah ok, thank you! So i'm guessing the X8 is actually a better SSD than the X9. Just need something decent enough to play the sims on haha
