Im digging out my two 3/4 inch sheet transoms plywood from the inside, don't have much experience and don,t know anyone that does,so here i am,the wood looks like there is epoxy around the outdrive as i can see the mat on both sides about 20 inches from the sides.Once i get the first piece fit.Im at 13 min now and im in to new territory, set up will be important.
We call that a digging bar here in usa
My timing chain scrapes inside the cover grinds inside and metal pieces are blocking the pick up pipe. Iv took to 5 mechanics and had timing chain re timed and replaced twice. Third time at the mechanics rn i have no hope in someone fixing this. Was fine before i got chain replaced wish i never did it now and just let it snap one day lol
Shot man this is great video for my sons car.
got a mk5 jetta. need to pull the head. thinking of just pulling the engine to do a overhaul in the garage
How did you do the corners with the new glass? Did you overlap each strip of glass to the intersecting? Curious as I’m doing the same repair to my boat. Thanks
Legend
I've read its a good idea to change the foam roller every 5 min.
I like the vertical then horizontal then another light vertical roll.
Can you do this with an mk7?
Good build, thanks for posting.👍
You’re the first person I’ve seen use red thread locker of little tty bolts. Seen blue or without several times. Ever have any problems getting them out or do you hit with heat first or use very minimal?
You use that loctite 518 flange sealant on vacuum pump o-rings too? Never heard of that trick but sounds brilliant!
What’s that shiny stuff under the bonnet ?
Dynamat Hoodliner.
See you got a lot of MK5 GTI vids! Suprised I haven’t came across your channel yet. Earned my sub for sure! 🤙🏻
Few more to come!
Burn much oil mate? That 0w stuff is thin as. Love the BOOST! And you have pcv delete. Re fitted after pcv replaced?
Yeah replaced PCV with a new stock one. The 0W-40 is actually thicker than the factory spec 5W-30.
@@cheapthrillsgarage thicker? No kidding. I must try it for the summer.
can you come over and help me pull my motor
Why is there holes down on the bottom corners to let water in to rot out the transom ? WTF ? I cant even process that shoddy workmanship wow
Those chambers are sealed, but yeah I agree it was disappointing to find.
Fantastic good work! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Heck of a well done job:)
good work /and not so easy/ , the reason for carb is overused pcv -oil separator - you should replace it asap otherwise carb will appear on the intake, valves quickly
They look ok, you could have made better use of the space, some rolling draws on one side would have been a better use of the space, all u can do now is pile stuff in very un organised. Don’t get me wrong you did a great job just think it through a bit more don’t just get stuck on they are boxes for seats on a boat u really need to optimise all free space. They will now end up having crap put in because u can’t put anything of value or fragile in them
Your corner radius is to small
Tip always use a structural mat for corner joints then overlap full sheets of chop for inside
Perfection in auto painting and home garage don’t go together
Nice job only fault is u should have spread a cabisol mix on with a tile trowl prior to fitting your half sheets of plywood. What it does is fill any voids that you will have due to the two surfaces not being dead flat. Otherwise your getting there. It’s the little things when doing this work. Have to say I didn’t like the look or how they were left open at the transom, the stringers. Youmist a opportunity to make sure you will get 0 water infiltrating
What's the opening temperature for that thermostat you installed?
Same as standard, these engines should always sit on 90 deg.
@@cheapthrillsgarage I have found 2 different ones that work, one open at 80c and other one opens at 87c idk which one is standard
NICE... a Land Rover Discovery and a Peugeot. Both my favs. I have a 96 D1 300tdi. Used to have a Peugeot 505. I'm also about to paint, but on aluminium.
The 205 will be my next project!
Hey mate, I see you suggest HSY for parts but on their website it says they don't sell to the public and only to "Automotive Wholesale and Trade industry only." How did you get around this? Great content btw!
If you go into the Geebung store, they sell over the counter. I've never had an issue there. Never bought online from them though.
@@cheapthrillsgaragelegend cheers
heyy you have an 205 Gti :) i had two of theese.... Flying coffin
It'll be the next project most likely.
Nice vid . Did u get what brand the factory thermostat was ? Mahle I think they are
Not sure sorry
Nice video !!
Bro what an epic repair job! Had you been present for the original build this repair would never be required! Wonderful eye for detail bravo!🙏🙏🙏
I know I am a Yank. lol But I have to say very impressive. I have done many many transom repairs. Your is a job above. Thanks
Guy’s in the gearbox there is 6 liter not 2 😮😮😮
Were you not tempted to remove the swirl flaps?
Nope, they are there for a reason.
Insane level of detail! So impressive!
Amazing series of videos on this project! Absolutely love it and really appreciate documenting so much, very hard to find information condensed, thank you so much!
Is that a compact sheet ?
Not sure what you mean
For the second top coat, no light sand , just the nor-clean. Is that right ? And top job.
As long as you apply the additional coat in 24 hours no sand is required. I recommend 3 coats instead of 2, there was a few dark patches of primer you can see through in the light with 2 coats.
How much money did you spend on the main transom rebuild? And any idea on how much time approx all up. Bit of a guess I know. Over how many days about. Cheers Mick
Probably $1500 and 4 days in the shed.
Great work. I've got a 200,000km mk5 gti that I started working on myself and have found this video invaluable. Your idle cleaning up makes me want to do the same for my chain and tensioner. Out of curiosity, where do you generally source parts from? I'm having trouble finding quality parts in Aus and have had to shop around heaps. Cheers.
HSY Autoparts are good, also Run Auto parts. Sparesbox are useless.
@@cheapthrillsgarage thanks mate I'll have a look at HSY. I've had good results so far from Run Auto. Sometimes Rock Auto in the states seems to work out pretty well too. Chinese market seems to saturate all my search results normally. Cheers!
Great video!
Very nice job!
Very good, nice work 👌
Any video of the engine running in the water?
I'll have another one uploaded soon.
Super robota
Superb tutorial, cheers mate, have to tackle this job on my edition 30. Thank you 🙏🏻
VW doesn't have pilot bearing in the crankshaft?
Didn’t see one.
Did wet the plywood with resin first, then put glass down???
Yes soak it 2-3 times
