I prefer the version of galadriel in the rings of power compared to tolkeins version as described here. She's supposed to be wise, powerful and good, but she hardly does anything to fight sauron, apart from helping gandalf clear him out of dul caldur. This inactivity strikes me not as wise or compassionate, but cowardly and cold to all the suffering out in the world. And I like galadriel in the rings of power a great deal better than the insipid and indifferent cate blanchett. Rop's galadriel wouldve offered to go with the fellowship or ridden into battle at minas tirith. If there's great evil in the world and youve got the power to make a difference, you dont go hiding away in the forest, you get off your lazy backside and do something about it. Tolkeins galadriel strikes me as weak.

I'd rather know what if any actual benefit they offer to the wearer. That seems to be the weakest part of the story tbh. Nobody seems to be able to explain a single positive reason the person would wear any of these rings for longer than five seconds before discarding it and having it melted down.

Narratively it’s kind of implied that by the time of the fellowship of the ring the orcs of the misty mountains are a spent force which is why the movie is misleading about their numbers The war of the dwarves and orcs had cleared much of the misty mountains and the battle of the five armies exhausted the numbers of both Moria and Gundabad Sauron’s plan of using them to conquer the north had failed they couldn’t muster the numbers for vast armies to launch attacks against Lothlorien the woodland realm dale and Eriebor during the war of the ring the bulk of the Sarouns northern armies are made up of easterlings and uruks from Mordor

I've always speculated that Radagast had/has his own separate mission, of watching over Nature directly, instructed, maybe in secret, by Yavanna herself. Now that the world was bent, and Middle Earth disconnected from the direct reach of the Valar, she needed to ensure that her beloved growing things were not fully abandoned, stranded and forgotten on the mortal realm, and that they finally got their advocate. I absolutely do not doubt that Radagast would lend his aid to any elf or human, dwarf or hobbit in need he encountered, maybe he even did in unwritten accounts. As for why did he remain in Middle Earth, because I believe his mission was not bound to the fate of Sauron, it was/is a one-way task, both he and Yavanna knew that even if Men won the war, the smaller things of the world would still need their protector, industrialism and prosperity for the Race of Men shouldn't be left unchecked. He remained behind for his love of forests and animals, but also to ensure that they endure in peace. So his great mission is still ongoing, in my eyes 🐰🕊

I believe, that rather than the similar etymology hinting at a subconscious/logical link between the arkenstone and the silmarils, in a lot of Tolkein's world-building, the alternate linguistic derivations hint at different culture's versions of the same essential device. So much in the way that the Silmarils are representative of the light of Varda/Elbereth, that the Arkenstone is representative of the essence of Aule, which would make sense given that it was buried in the mountain, and seems to have particular potency on the Dwarves.

A similar thing happened in the brilliant rings of power. While the humans were under seige, the enemy offered to spare anyone who went over to their side. Many people accepted the offer. Later, those who remained and stayed faithful to the cause made preparations for the inevitable attack. It came and it seemed that all their plans had worked and they'd won. They went to look at the fallen orcs they'd defeated. Only it wasnt orcs who lay dead around them, it was their own people who'd gone over to sauron's side, many who had only done so out of fear and desparation. Then the real attack began... In what way is this not true to tolkein? And either way, it's still magnificently depicted

My mum used to read Letters from Father Christmas to my brother and I when we were little at bedtime, we loved it. I’ve never really thought about it before but this would have been the first time I heard any Tolkien, maybe it’s what started my love for his work!?

Sauron deep down isn't a destroyer he's always been a creative spirit. That spirit has been twisted of course but he wouldn't ruin what he's sought forever. Sauron would require obedience and servitude of all beings. Those that resisted his will would have to be removed for the greater good of middle earth. Sauron to me was always the most interesting character from the silmarillion, until the end.

I just noticed now that you keep calling Feanor "the greatest craftsman of the 1st age" It's a bit of nitpicking, but didn't the 1st age started a short time AFTER Feanor's death? By this logic he should be the greatest craftsman of the age of the trees (not that there's a big difference, but it's a bit like some of the world's magic has already left even before the first man open his eyes)

Based on the council scene, I still nominate Gimli as ring bearer. And to clarify the ‘undying lands’, things there move ultra slow because it’s made for those who can afford to wait. Imagine arriving at the start of spring as a flower slowly starts to open; you will never see the flower fully open, it simply takes too long.

I believe Sauron wouldn't want to contact the Balrog. He'd probably fear it usurping him. I believe Durin's Bane was 100% ignorant of anything happening on the surface. Possibly came to love his deep 'home' after thousands of years there and not want to leave it.
