Rainbow Dave, I love that you don't just go thru the story like you're reading bullet points. You tell us what happens, but then you go the extra step of diving into characters' motives, emotions, and connections with other parts of the tale. Thank you for doing justice to Tolkien! ❤

Even when Turin made good choices, and with good intentions, the outcome was always dreadful and nefarious. So maybe it was good that he chose NOT to go back to Doriath with Beleg, lest he would’ve brought ill fate to that Elven Realm.

@@tolkienuntangled Hurin did come to Doriath later, and the results were indeed disasterous for Doriath in time. Though Thingol and the Dwarves really have to take much of the blame for that mess.

I've gotta say: Because of your channel, I've finally gotten around to finishing the Silmarillion, and I loved it; probably more so than both the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings.
It really made me want to read all of the additional texts too, though, so I'm going to have to carve out the time to read all of them at some point.

I finally listened to the Andy Serkis reading of Lord of the Rings when I realized I'd probably spent more time listening to Rainbow Dave talk about Tolkien than it would take to listen to the books. It was really fun having all the background and being able to notice little things. It felt like a second reading even though it was my first.
Agreed! I keep ordering books...I'm waiting for Morgoths Ring and The Fall of Numenor now. Tried to find a copy of The Nature of Middle Earth, but Amazon only had it as a Kindle, and I am a book lover

I listened to this video while having a walk outside, and i had my jaw down when Turin refused to go back to Doriath. This man is definitely cursed with bad decisions lol.

1:02:09 another great video and chapter in Turin's story. Yes he is stubborn but also he had found purpose. To redeem a group of men from evil and forge them into a "knighthood" that will unleash their violence against morgoth's servants only. In a context of hardships and troubled times there is much to be accounted for.

Again, great video! Looking forward for the next episode of this series. Turin is great and he is dumb at the same. The only thing the curse needs to do to screw with him is to increase his pride by a bit, that is all it takes. His pride was his undoing.

Turin makes a lot of sense…Think about it with empathy in the reflection of life today…hes a man in his 20’s & 30’s…Left home after a squabble… got a pretty bad job & barely scrapes by often doing things the elves in their gilded halls never contemplate but havent had to in order to survive. His uncle comes to him & tells him to quit his job, let down those who count on him & just come home & live off his parents…. How many of us give up on their own path? Even though it’s harder & less gilded. Quit our jobs & live off mother… Not all pride is folly.
Turin is such an interesting character because he’s the closest that we get in Tolkien to an “atheist” hero. He denies the idea that the Valar have any influence in the world and he even goes so far as to claim the title of “master of his fate”, a title that, in Tolkien’s works, belongs to God (Eru) alone.
I’ve noticed that more and more people are starting to relate to this character, and I suspect it’s due to the fact that Christianity and Religion are dying, and that this sort of secular worldview is starting to take over.
I suppose I’m part of this as an atheist, but I still think Túrin is a vital warning as to the dangers of buying TOO much into this worldview.
I think it's not so much a question of too much atheism, as it's a case of falling into nihilism, which is, I believe, where Túrin"s journey eventually ends, and another thing he has in common with Morgoth.
Atheism is not a worldview. Atheism is the rejection of a single claim, that god exists. Everything that comes after that is separate from atheism.
He wishes to deny it but ultimately knows that what he is denying is true and in the end he knows he is no master of fate and that everything he tried to deny ultimately got him as a result of it

Getting spooked and killing their captives is pretty typical for orcs, and doesn't require any mistake on Turin's part or Morgoth's curse to get involved. The orcs killed the prisoners from Nargothrond when the men of Brethil attempted to rescue them, too. Sometimes life in the Silmarillion era just really, really stinks for everyone.

This channel wouldn't be what it is if there is no mentioning of feanor. And yes I do believe that he is the problem of lots of chaos, turmoil and grief in middle earth.

Is there any connection between Morgoth being called “the dark hand” and Saruman having “the white hand of Saruman?” Or is that just a movie thing?
In the book, Saruman used an S rune on his orcs armour. There's a bit in The Departure of Boromir where Gimli says "S for Sauron" but Aragorn corrects him that orcs would use that kind of writing, but Saruman would

I guess Im prideful too. I think Turin telling the King it was not his fault, would be like a child telling mommy that 'it was Bobbies fault'!. I think Turin was acting like a man, not a child to be protected. I think the elf maiden was the perfect remedy for Turin's actions. All this as long it was said graciously on Turin's part. So in this light, is why I defend his actions. Just my humble opinion. I think Tolkien was genius in creating this development. No malice intended. Only admiration for Tolkein.
