In this video we analyze the rare 5-cylinder engines whether V, VR, or inline.
Each has its pros and cons but Honda's V 5 engine is truly unique. Only the competition unit was built and it was never sold to the public. Why do you think this happened?
The 5 inline was not used in ancient times but it is today.

always loved the older beetles great little cars hard to kill em + that unforgettable sound they made, currently I drive a '64 Merc with a 390cid, but the beetles still hold a place in my heart
12volt electrical system came in 1967.
Bikes have typical short stroke engines and as such can rev higher ( one limiting factor is the travel speed of the piston in the cylinder, short strokes need to travel less distance). Thus the horsepower mainly comes from the higher RPM's.. Example: 10.000 rpm's = 5000 igniton moments per cylinder per minute ( two rotations of the crank = 1cycle). thus the crank gets pushed 5000*4= 20.000 times per minute ( 4=cylinders). However more horsepower , does not mean better torque. Short stroke engines have far less torque as the lever action on the crank is less then with long stroke engines. Car engines are typical long stroke and have more torque as a short stroke engine at the same RPM's. But they can't rev as high , due to the piston speed limitations in the cylinders . Thus a car engine has an RPM redline at 7000. that is 3500*4= 14000 combustions, where as the example of the biike with a redline at 10.000 RPM's has 20.000 combustions in t he same time.. Thus the car engine has less power then the bike ( assuming the same displacement) , but has a better torque. Its always a balance Power versus Torque
Two are strokes are the best thinnest best engines
Two Stroke without pre compression is easyer... (und nicht Geheimnisvoll)
Expensive so put in a sports car. In line 6 horizontaly mounted mid engine hybrid
Learned to drive a mid 70's Beetle out on a frozen lake (Wind Lake, southeastern WI) when I was 4-1/2 years old. Booster seat and blocks on the pedals
5:21... no "MIXTURE" is 'injected, ... fuel is injected!
Either fuel injection or motorcycle carbies
Can gay people drive old cars? It’s okay?
If connecting rods working less on one side and more on other side, that means that + and - ,negate offset drag. And friction is exactly the same like in every V6 engine! Thus giving no increased friction or performance loss ! We saw that 3.6 fsi vr6 (10.6 degree), atmospheric engine , not high spec but meant to be driven in a city, have 300 hp and 355nm from 3.6 liters. Which is quite normal !
cm three? Clearly another AI narrated video. Stopped watching, I don't want to encourage this crap. Downvoted as well.
had a new VW 1971 Super Beetle had 1600000 on it when I sold it. Everyone I talk to that had a VW the air cooled liked it
Btw. There are 1700whp Audi inline 5 engines in Drag racing !
The beetle is chubbier tho. An absolute bubble.
Iconic style car, great information.Thanks
I think I did learn something about 2-stroke gas engines here,---but the vid is half EPA propaganda, with some poor technical information. They call this "progress" in our schools.
Funny a bit. 9:58, on the dirt bike with a go-pro on his helmet: "Do I take this line down the hill, or this line?" He choose the easy one. :)
8:40 The bot vid is comparing a corrected compression ration (7:1, the area only above the exhaust port in the stroke), to a 4-stroke method (12:1) using the full stroke of the bore. People do measure 2-stroke compression with the 4-stroke method, (which is not a good practice IMO), but the corrected method is just for 2-strokes. You will not find a 2-stroke with 12:1 compression, (measured by the corrected method), that will run on gas with out failure,---quickly.
7:40 That is also not true. My dyno reads with different types of exhaust, or none at all, (as I calibrated my dyno), with these 3 different runs: 1 Tuned pipe makes the most power. 2) No exhaust at all made the 2nd most. 3) A stock exhaust can, (found on all lawn equipment for example), made the least amount of power. (Pipe almost doubles that power). On the engines I work on, the stock can makes about 18% less power than no exhaust at all.
7:00 Another ill educated bot error. Pressure does not cause the reverse wave in a tuned pipe. Sound does.
But, the back pressure will help hold in the fresh gasses from leaving the ex. port at lower rpm's, before the sound wave is in effect. We use the calculations of "sound speed" to created a proper length and geometry tuned pipe. If you build too much pressure, (a small diameter exhaust end bleed, the end of the exhaust), then the engine will get hotter at higher rpm, like the close cats on your car overheating your engine in an effort to burn every hydrocarbon. Nope, the EPA does not care how long your gas engine lasts, unless it is a shortened live span. I don't see Toyota ads today, like we did 40 years ago, bragging about 300,000 miles.
If the environment were a legitimate concern, then why over the last 45 years of giving our free enterprise and production to communism in china, has there never been our (western culture) EPA regulations added to the trade agreements? communism gets a free ride, while we, who created free enterprise in the first place, are punished.
"The appearance of direct injection was good news for the 2-stroke engine." Forced by the EPA and increases the cost of the engine with less market share due to cost and complexity,--------------------is not good news. Intervention like that has damaged every industry we ever created, and your car should be about half the price it is today for the same reasons.
1:50 Oil burning is more blue in color. White smoke (steam) is probably a water cooing leak into the cylinder. Good crisp jetting greatly reduces that smoke you see in that example.
Is the bot sure that t-stroke ports are just "simple holes"? Because decades of research and testing to gain the most power has proven to be quite complicated. Probably much more complicated than a valve. So, I already see "simple holes" in this vid.
That annoying crappy-ass background "music" totally ruined the video making it unwatchable and earning the fool poster yet another "thumbs down"!
How is crankcase lubrication with direct injection?
my brother and I owned a 2CV back in 1998, the 50th anniversary of the vehicle I found out, many years later. It was two tone grey, and amazing fun to drive.
It seems to me that the piston will hammer itself into oblivion the moment that any wear changes min distance between the top and bottom part of the piston. Also the inertia forces inside the engine will be tremendous. Fuel injected two stroke is the future. Simple ,light and powerful.
ERCAllE family matters grove one😮
Was built till middle 90es at a factory in Portugal 25millon were made in totale fist model appeared before ,WW2 went into in 1948
Очень хорошо сказал информацию. Спасибо👍😊
Great video! 🌟⭐⭐🤩
With the Pistons reaching top dead center at different times, did the engine have an ignition system which fired two spark plugs separately and a different times?
No, only one spark. By the time the flame front reaches the 2nd piston, it starts to descend. So there is no problem.
The Volvo 5cyl had also an interesting history and lots of evolutions. At the end they where also in the Ford Focus performance models. Excellent video.
Motorcycles engines have low internal weight, low internal friction from small piston rings to small main bearings to a lightweight flywheel/clutch, It is much easier to spin low mass internals. HP per liter is cakewalk with small motorcycle engines.
WHERE IS THE R35 GTR V6, ALSO PLS MAKE A CROSSPLANE AND FLATPLANE V8
There was also a Méhari 4x4, and unlike the 2CV Sahara, it had a regular one engine setup
Could you make a mode for My Summer Car, please? 😄
This engine is essentially a four stroke, but with an asymmetric motion so that the two lower-effort strokes are performed via cam instead of via crank. The intake stroke is only low effort at wide open throttle, however. On a gasoline engine, closing down the throttle would make it necessary to have a spring that's stiff enough to draw vacuum (negating some of the other advantages) or else using delayed intake closure as a means of controlling power.
What app are you using for animation ?
Solidworks
Vw rival?! You mean, „brother”. Both were designed by Ferdinand Porsche.
i absoutely don't get it...
I think it would be a neat vehicle if it was more aerodynamic and had a little more power. I did enjoy this video though
I hope honda will sell bikes hat have v5 engine in the near future
They won't, because of emissions.
So 20% more eficenc6
Great thanks
Honda CR 500 cc
Membuang masa membazir tenaga, gas exhaust boleh dibuang terus kenapa nak disimpan trlebih dahulu, menambahkan kepanasan engine je
This video has many technical errors. "Repairman22" - you might want to research the following technical details: 1. Loop scavenge two-stroke vs. externally scavenged two-stroke (hint: what you described in this video is a loop-scavenged two-stroke, with only a brief image of an externally scavenged two-stroke at the end of the video, but no description of the differences) 2. Rolling element bearings vs. fluid film bearings (hint: typical modern four-stroke engines use fluid film bearings - making the statement @5:30 nonsensical) 3. Piston port vs. reed valve vs. rotary valve induction (hint: performance figures from racing engines show no significant performance advantage for any of these, making your statement @3:00 inaccurate) 4. Rolling element bearing lubrication requirements (hint: rolling element bearings require very little lubrication - making your statement @9:50 nonsensical) 5. Incomplete description of the reason for the shape of high-performance two-stroke exhaust pipes 6. No mention of lack engine braking (aka pumping losses, aka "compression braking") 7. No mention of transfer-port injection (or crankcase injection) when discussing direct fuel injection
As a 2-stroke engine builder myself, I would have to disagree with #3 a bit. I would say the rotary valve intake offers the best performance, then reeds, then piston port. The reason is the difference way they fill the crank cases. Reeds offer a wider power curve, (and usually more power, as piston ports rarely have a 5th transfer), over a piston port, and it flows based on different pressures and not piston location, and can have an open duration of the intake to a full 360 degrees, allowing fuel to flow when ever pressure differences let it happen. But, the reed valve is an obstruction. Rotary valve, similar to the piston port as the flow is controlled by mechanical means instead of different pressures, has the ability to tune the intake duration at closing, and opening, where the piston port is symmetrical, but is more expensive to build. Obviously, the MX factories went with reeds starting in the 70's, because they are out performing the piston ports. But I think the rotary valve has the best potential because of that intake control, and no obstruction like a reed valve. I will listen to this vid, (which is probably a bot vid, just repeating what it learned, correct or incorrect), and I bet I could find other discrepancies also. :)
But the reed valve is of little use, if there are no reed transfer ports to increase time area of the transfers, so we can increase the time area of the exhaust port to match. I have only seen one piston port MX bike engine (an old Montessa), that was able to use a 5th transfer. It was the only time I saw that unusual casting configuration, but there may be more.
@@EarthSurferUSA - finally, a CZcams commenter that knows of what they write! I completely agree that rotary valve 2-strokes have the highest potential power output (I was simplifying my comment for the majority of the CZcams audience). The title of my senior undergraduate thesis was, "Expansion chamber exhaust in loop-scavenged two-stoke engines". I did a lot of research and theoretical work, backed up by cutting, rolling, welding and testing several different exhaust systems (I even built a dynamometer from scratch for testing). My test "mule" was an old TZ-250 Yamaha. I ended up with a set of "top speed" pipes which sacrificed torque spread for top speed, and a set of "acceleration" pipes for tighter tracks with no significant straits. Those were the days (I still love the smell of burning castor-bean oil)!!
