    We always planted potatoes on ground to clean it up and create structure. Pigs went on afterwards to till the ground. Watch out for build ups of eel worm. Horse nut beans would be a good follow on crop to lock in the nitrogen.

    I love your videos, thank you so much for sharing your life. One question about the regenerative experiment: wouldn’t it be possible to let the cows of your village friend eat these pastures in the way you described? Could be a win win, no? Then you don’t need to worry about winter feed and it’s probably nice for the farmer too. Just a thought ;)

    • @Talasbuan
      @Talasbuan Před 6 dny

      Yes! I have thought of that. Need to have a conversation with him if I possibly could take care of his non milking cows for a summer. The worry about winter feed will probably never go away. So it t is something that one just needs to accept.

    I really enjoy your content. You do however seem quite overwhelmed with the many tasks you have to do therefore may I make a suggestion? Why not ask for a little help in the form of volunteers. You could offer this as an opportunity for some of your followers to experience your way of life, provide some well earned meals and in return you could benefit from extra pairs of hands. I subscribe to one other CZcamsr based in the Italian Alps who does this and has really benefitted from this plus he has gained some new good friends! I hope you consider this suggestion. We did no till potatoes. We have done it with straw (not hay). We have also done it with grass clippings from the lawn mower, and I bet you could do it with wood chips. The idea of any cover is that it keeps the light from the soil so that the weeds don't thrive. What we did was cardboard or newspaper, then 6" or more of compost hills (that are rows of 6"+ tall compost). Or you could skip the newspaper and just do 2-3" hills on top of the rows of potatoes you just put on the ground in rows, then lots of straw or wood chips. Sawdust could work also. Mix them or do different rows of different coverings for a nice science experiment. We did not hill (add more dirt) them every week. We never had to add more and got lots of potatoes.

  • @ElenaKatarina88
    @ElenaKatarina88 Před 8 dny

    On the potatoes, no dig without old straw or hay i have not heard of. But a horse would be great to use for the potatofield! They do eat a lot of hay thou.. and you should have a friend for it, so two horses is necessary. But they are the best for " hyppe" because they won't compact the soil as a tractor will. Potatoes is quite hungry, did you fertilize it? A con for using hay to cover it, or hay- you just need a material to cover the soil to keep the potatoes out of the soil. Hay, leaves any carbon rich material there is plenty of. Fresh manure is to strong and pine needles to low pH. Other than that grain husks, sheepwool.. I don't know what materials could be around were you are? Is there any production we're there is a waste product? Anyways, the con with using a carbon ground cover on potatoes is reducing moisture evaporation, feeding the worms and building carbon in the soil. Reducing rain runoff and yeah, I guess you know this. Where I live its 100's of horses and soil rats who eat into the big haybales making them go bad, so I get a few delivered when I need. If you find some, use a mask when spreading it out, mold spores is no fun, but they get composted quick when in touch with soil. Your channel is lovely and so inspiring to get my ass of the couch and continue on my own projects. I have followed you for a couple of years and now have my own meat rabbits 😄

    I bought Italion 3 banded bees once and they were so tame you didn`t need all that bee attire. I never got stung once with just normal clothing. Don`t buy russian 5 banded bees, they are mean. I don`t know what species of bees you bought but some are tame and some are not. Three banded Itallion bees are tamest of all. You can identify them by the three black stripes on their abdonems.
