The SHALLOW Depth of Field TRAP
The SHALLOW Depth of Field TRAP
6 ESSENTIAL TIPS for BETTER PHOTOS
-
A shallow depth of field is an easy way to immediately set your images apart from phone snapshots and smaller, cheaper cameras. but if you always default to shooting wide open, you deny yourself the opportunity to develop some really key compositional skills.
Thoughtful attention to the adjustment of your depth of field is essential, as it plays a direct role in shaping the visual impact and storytelling elements within an image. Considerate manipulation of depth of field allows you to influence and craft both the narrative and aesthetics of your photography.
This video contains 6 essential tips for getting better depth of field in your photos. I look at the work of Alex Webb to see what we can learn from his amazing work.

High speed photography is a fascinating and powerful form of image making. It may be something that you have shied away from because it seems too technical, and it can be very technical, but it doesn’t always need to be. There is one myth that needs debunking - Full Frame gives less DOF. That only applies if you move closer to the subject. Examples at 100mm f2.8, all at the same distance (5m) to the subject :- FF = 399mm APSC = 261mm 4/3 = 192mm To get 192mm DOF on FF, the distance needs to be 3.5m Simply put, FF increases DOF at the same distance - the opposite of what everybody thinks, Could this be a myth started by camera manufacturers to sell more expensive kit ?

As someone you mostly shoots landscape architecture for the vast majority of my pictures depth of field isn't something I need to worry about. Just close the aperture down and have everything in focus but in some cases its really interesting to play with it a bit and control the whats the main subject of the picture is.

I've been doing this for 50 years, you explain things very well. I wouldn't put too much effort into metering, though, just shoot it and look at it. Adjust. The other thing I would add is using hand-held light sources can be useful, not for trails but illumination.

  • @BernhardSchwarz-xs8kp

Graphic composition - using the "object" as the center or as an element to lead into the scene - and using light like a brush to highlight and amplify the beauty and sensuality of objects, lines, and shapes - are the differences between clicking a picture and visual art. This is the message in this video. But - spreading it over 17 minutes is an overkill.

This the dumbest thing i have heard. Using shallow depth of field because you paid money for it! Haha!! Thats american maybe. Its just a setting. A tool. Many of the photos you showed would have looked better with more closed down blades so you can actualy see whats in the background. Also the picture is sharper more closed down. Also it gives some wiggle room fir the character, and its realy not necesary to have eyes in focus, but ears out of focus. To me it sounds you completely miss the point of photography. And just like expensive things, if you were a woman, you would have huge implanted breasts, and 100 pladtic surgeries, just because you can! And look hideous :)

Is Webb more of a “photographer’s photgrapher”? A lot of those photos seem to be just street photos of 3rd world countries. I guess what I’m saying is I don’t get it. These aren’t amazing photos unless you know a lot about photography.

Just posing a question. Does a long exposure compress a moment in time, or spread it out? It’s not hard to argue that a picture is a slice of time, space and light… but a long exposure is not so much a slice, but a loaf.

The general rule i have developed is: never start out trying to do something good. Instead, do something random or even crappy and then make it good. Everyone fights "blank page syndrome", where you feel frozen and unable to make that first mark because you don't want to put it in the wrong place, or be the wrong thing. "It was a..." No That's passive. "The man jumped..." Too direct. You realize that rather than putting things right from the start you can take things that are there are improve them.

From one Jamie to another. Nice to see a post like this. People really do often overuse it. I have been taking portraits for years and I have learned to use shallow DOF sparingly. To my eyes it can be really dull and predictable. It also slows down the consumerist engine where people think they have to spend thousands and thousands on ''pro'' fast lenses just to fit in. Now that iphones have computational shallow DOF, I hope the obsession will wane.

  • @S3l3ct1ve
    @S3l3ct1ve Před 4 dny

Indeed so. One thing you want your lens fast is when you do paid work shooting weddings or some other occasions, where you are very heavily reliant on your environment and subjects. You need to provide the professional looking shots even if your environment issint great or your subjects are not cooperating with you. Fast lens means that you can separate your subject from the background and this really helps a lot.

I recently came across a video on reddit of a fashion film where the filmmaker used a m43 camera with a vintage mamiya lens and it looked like a technicolor dream where with a deep focus the crowded background was as much a part of the imagery as the characters. This guy made the subject standout purely through composition and colors. It had an overwhelming response on his insta page but then I came across a comment on reddit where a guy “points out his failure” of not being able to create a shallow depth of field and introduces the concept of an ND so that he could correct the error 😂 The filmmaker was sweet enough to not mind it at all but it made me think how synthetically we sometimes approach what is pure art. This video is such a positive and inspiring piece for me after coming across something like that coz you cant help but think if it isnt rubbing off on you being surrounded by such approach all the time. Thank you for this

  • @silvertube52

No actually I've never fallen for the shallow depth of field trap. I'm a stereo photographer and always go for maximum depth of field. Stereo photographers usually control their composition carefully, keeping the entire scene in focus so the viewer can explore the whole space.
