Learning how to use, control and edit colour is a vital part of learning colour photography. A lot of that is down to what you choose to put in the frame, but also there’s a large influence from how the colours are tweaked in post production. So I’ll take you through 8 quick tips, tricks, techniques and ideas for shooting and editing that will hopefully help you create photographs that use colour well.

OMG finally an actual explanation of Calibration v HSL! Thank you!
I was unsure whether to put that bit in, so glad it's appreciated.
@@jamiewindsor Honestly, it's the thing that differentiates if from just a regular talk about color I've seen so many times. I think it's a very good idea to put more of those little technical explanations, especially when it isn't that complex to present. Additionally, it all came together in the end, because you showed how to work with complementary colors, not against them in HSL which was a key point of intro. Love your content! :)
@@jamiewindsor I also really appreciated this. I've been using the calibration panel for a while without really fully understanding what I was doing so this was super useful.
10/10. Also my favourite part of the video.
@@jamiewindsor that part was my absolut favorite in the video. Glad you didn’t leave it out.
When you showed the bonus tip about changing to Camera Settings, my jaw literally dropped... No wonder it never looked right when I imported my photos! Thank you for that!
Jamie, I hope you realize you have by far the most useful photography advice on this platform. Seriously. I cannot believe this content is free. Thank you for all your hard work :)
ikr!?
I mean i cant even find similar quality videos on skillshare and on other sites where u need to pay :D
Totally agree - amazing!
Facts
I just discovered Jamie 20 min ago, that was my first thought.
The only problem with Jamie Windsor videos is that I cant play them in the background while I'm working... they demand my full attention!
Yes, I hear you, was trying to edit, but you miss so much!
Set VPN location to Argentina, buy CZcams premium for $12 for the year. Job done.
@@Luke..luke..luke.. that's not what he meant. He was saying that for these videos it's crucial to actually watch it with your eyes to take in all the information, and that merely listening to it wouldn't suffice.
Haha 100% paused this while editing so I could watch it with all eyes another time 😅
I feel like that calibration part... it's the one thing no photographer or CZcamsr has wanted to reveal before. SO POWERFUL.
setting the LR preference to Camera settings, game-changer- you rock Jamie!
I spent a fair while thinking my EOS R didn't have as good colours as my 5D until I worked out that Lightroom wasn't applying the profiles from the camera.
I assumed camera profiles didn't affect RAW, isn't that correct?
@@arianjamali6183 They affect Raw files, but they're not embedded. They can be manually changed in post.
Do you know how to change this in Lightroom CC..? I don't see it an option.
Lightroom CC also doesn't even have the Calibration feature! 😭
Never really got the difference between HSL and Calibration. Now I understand the power of playing with the calibraition ! Thank you for sharing your knowledges !!!
This quite literally changed how I approach grading ALL my photos and have given me a sense of excitement in photography that I didn't know was possible. Thanks for taking me back to school, Jamie. Always good to revisit design fundamentals.
Me, being the hardest person to concentrate on stuff, specially CZcams tutorials, I really love how you animate your videos to keep attention. Great job, Jamie!
I'm a simple woman, I see a Jamie video and I click.
Jamie's videos deserve way more views. Amazing content.
The motion graphics and presentation as a whole is superb! Thanks Jamie🙌🏽
I've watched several videos on color grading is this by far the best one I have seen. You did such a great job, I love how you showed the color changes on the color wheels and then on the images, made everything so clear and relatable. Thank you for explaining all this and taking the time to put together such a great video!
I 120% agree..😊👍👍
Everytime there's a new Jamie video, is the same: I click only if I'm not in a rush. Then, I watch it once, marveling at the making of the video. Then I watch it again, making mental notes about the class he’s teaching
Jamie ! Never ever stop comming back to your video! The quality of it are incredible. I learn photography in school for 2 years 100% of the times about photography and the crazy part i learn much more in your video. You don't teach camera stuff you teach photography. That's a big difference in my book !
Yes another JW masterpiece! 🙌🏽
you saved my time to say exactly the same
Brilliant as usual. Even on a topic that for once I knew a bit about there were still some great new pointers, but what sets your videos apart is the connection to real-world fine art photography and knowledge of these concepts in practice, not in a vacuum or gear framework. Cheers
The one and only photographer who convince me that studying photography could be more complex then my medical study , yet you provide information in a great way
Ha way more. I read a lot. Whenever my medical friend talks about medical stuff I usually can add things she never realized. I wonder how much she could understand photography at my level
I really love your videos on photography! When I'm stuck in the editing process, I always go back to your videos to get some inspiration! Thank you for giving us great content, Jamie!
Your videos are so lucid, well-spoken and instructive. The transitions, examples, and amount of thought and planning are really astounding. Thank you Jamie for creating such wonderful, informative and inspiring work.
Honestly the best lesson I've received from videos. Everything else just showed me how to use the HSL slides, but this explains when to use them and utilizing another editing category to grade the photos.
Seriously, this has got to be the best, most precise colour tutorial I've sever seen! That color analogous and calibration vs HSL was on point! Thank you Jamie for sticking to the basics rather than feeding people with presets without understanding the whole clockwork. I'm forever your biggest fan! Sending love from the Philippines!
This is one of the best color tip videos I've seen. Clearly explained and answered without getting overly technical or abstract... and no blathering on and on about the obvious!
Jaime, honestly, you are absolutely amazing, and I cannot thank you enough for your beautiful and insightful videos. This last one especially, the HSL vs calibration has been a game changer for me, and my photos are now vibrant in a way I could never achieve before. Thank you so much.
The BEST video that I ever saw about color in photography! Tks, Jamie. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I can't say thank ypu enough for sharing your knowledge. The way you explain things really gets to the bottom of a concept instead of just explaining how to move sloders in Lightroom or whatever tool.
Amazing how much one can learn with a good teacher. Thank you, Jamie. Always a pleasure to watch your thoughtful, informative, and beautifully crafted videos.
It is always a treat when I see a new video from you. Content and aesthetic are spot on. Thank you Jamie!
I always learn so much from you! It's hard to express how grateful I am for the work you put into each video. Thank you!
Thank you. I'm glad you find my videos helpful.
This is the best tutorial on color calibration I've just studied ! Crystal clear and to the point ! Great works !
This is an incredible video, I’ve been watching photography and editing content for 10 years and I learned more about color and especially color calibration in this video! Beautifully explained, thank you! 🙏🏻

Thank you for the great video! purchased your presets twice now looking forward to the next batch!
This was an excellent video. I love when I learn something I can put to use right away -- your explanations of the HSL and Calibration panels have given me an entirely new way to approach photo editing. Thank you!
Love the quality of your videos! they really help me understand creative work better!
This is more useful than all the other color tutorials I've seen combined. Thank you, btw for not making this video just an ad for your presets, refreshing to find someone who actually cares about people learning more.
by far my favourite photography channel, great video, thank you!
I learn so much with your videos. I immediately pulled up old photos and am reediting them! Thank you!
Best CZcams channel because you concentrate on improving the creative process for us rather than the gear. Huge thank you. Taking me back to Art school. Please keep diving into subjects you find important.
Great vid, Jamie! I knew a lot of this before, but separately. And you showed the whole thing in a more practical way.
Very informative and easy for understanding. Thank you for sharing!
Amazing videos you create! Thanks. Very precise, concise and clear and helpful
Great video Jamie! Such a simple explanation of colour.
You make by far the most helpful videos I've found on youtube! Informative but digestible and always keeping the emotional importance of things in the forefront :)
This has been the most helpful content on colours I have watched. Thanks mate!
Each time I see a new video of JW is ready, I wait for the good moment to enjoyed it and learn. As it was a documentary, or a film... there are, indeed, something like that for me! Your work is brilliant, inspiring, admirable. Thanks for sharing!!
Normally i dont rly post comments, but your videos are so unbelievably well edited and calm. Gives time to absorb the information and think about own projects or ideas. well done Jamie, hats off
This just elevated my editing (and photography) enourmously! I tried a few things on lightroom and the results just blew my mind! thank you so much Jamie!
Great video, so many great tips here, so thank you Jamie. That iMac start-up sample is pure gold.
Very, very helpful and instructive. Thank you very much for this, Jamie!
Very good indeed! Love the pace of the video, it caught my attention from start to end!
I always get so many ideas by watching your videos...it is so inspirational! Thank you for that, Jamie!
Hey Jamie, I just wanted to leave a comment to say that you are my favourite CZcamsr hands down. Calling you just a CZcamsr feels like a disservice somehow. Your videos are clearly made with a lot of passion and hard work and it shows because everything is so well thought out and well, incredibly enjoyable to watch! I leave every single video feeling revitalised about photography and inspired to keep creating and pushing myself to do better. Thanks !
It's the most useful explanation of calibration section of lightroom I've ever seen! Thanks!
Another amazing video! Thanks for all you do Jamie!
The intro sequence and start-up music really just took me in. Love all the work you put into this! Huge tips. Saving this one for future reference.
Thanks a lot for your work! Every minute spent for your lessons bringing me forward of me photo and video skills.
This is one of the greatest videos explaining colour. Really apreciate it as I have been struggling so much. Loved it!
Such a great video. Calibration overview is brilliant.
!!!!! This explanation about HSL calibration is a huge help. Finally I understand it, thank you so much!!!!
This was just an incredible watch all around. Very inspiring! Thanks for making this.
Best channel for learning, inspiration and all! thanks Jamie !!
I love when a Jamie Video comes out. Great content, great graphics, great explanations and tips!
I learned so much as always. Really enjoyed the break down of the calibration tool and something I want to start using. Thanks again.
Amazing video. Thank you so much. Especially the quick Lightroom Tutorial was so so useful. It answered so many questions I had. Thank you 🙏

Can’t express how much I’ve appreciate this one! Thanks.
Another fantastic and very helpful video, thank you Jamie 👏🏻🙏🏻

This is the video about color I was waiting for, THANK YOU! Fascinating and super well explained🙂
I've been thinking of going indepth into color & this drops. Can't thank you enough.
Such a masterclass, especially on colour grading! thanks so much!
Always worth the wait. Thanks Jamie. I remember holding up the orange cellophane that they use to wrap Lucozade bottles in, in front of our black and white tv in the early sixties.
This was so well done and beautifully animated ❤️ Thank you Jamie!
Another epic video, great tip on using the color calibration in lightroom!
Great vid Jamie , I will have to watch this one again a few times. Great info in it as always you vids alway make we realise how much I don’t know about taking pictures.
Jamie that was mind blowing! So transformative. I've always used calibration but never really knew why - just moved the sliders about randomly until I was happy. Thank you.
I loved this! I learned a lot of new things. I mean already know how and when to use HSL and Calibration but the explanation makes things clear to me and now I have a better understanding to each of them.
just the video I needed, thank you so much man!!!! ❤️❤️❤️
Love it! Jamie has done it again!
I've been seriously getting into photography for a few months now since I bought my R6, and subsequently have been learning a lot about Lightroom but this explanation was sublime!!!! Recently I started to feel more confident about Lightroom but the calibration vs HSL was something I really needed more info on. This was amazing, thank you so much!!!!
This video is just brilliant! Thank you for all the useful information you share🙏🏻
Excellent! Really good, simple and straightforward communication - love it! I've now subscribed to the channel.
The best video about colors I have ever seen, and believe me, I've seen a lot! The Lightroom setup tip is brilliant!
This video popped up on my feed at precisely the right moment. I just got my first few rolls of film back from the lab and I've been confounded by the colors of the film stock (Kodak Portra 160/400/800). While attempting to tweak the scans in Lightroom, the idea dawned on me that I have never truly invested time in understanding the nuanced differences between the various color grading tools in Lightroom. For years I was happy to take the simplest approach possible on this. I appreciate you putting this together.
This is so excellent, especially the calibration info neat the end!
Wow, what a great video! Thanks for explaining everything so neatly
well done sir! Lots of great , insightful info ..thanks Jamie
Such a beautifully crafted video with so much valueable information! Thank you so much!
Amazing video as usual! Thank you for your work!
Brilliant... Learnt a lot.thank you. This will change my photos forever.
As always, amazing content from you! Cool visuals!
You are one of the most underrated channels on yt... You provide value to my time and give me knowledge, i would love if you can produce more videos... But i also think that they will loose their magic... You are the only channel that i check regularly to see if you have posted new content... Keep up the good work.
Your vids are always so solid and I always learn something new. 👏👏👏
This is so helpful!! Love your videos especially your Lightroom tutorials. Please do more ❤️
Never not the best photography video of the week when you put out a new one. Wonderfully interesting, helpful, and appreciated.
Every video you make is amazing, keen to see more
Just love your channel Jamie, it makes think a bit more out the box
