Ok so ive been using something from this pack in every video, but was disappionted that it was locked at 24fps, but today i figured out you can go in after effects and change the fps to what you want. idk if i remember you said that, But im so happy i figured this out, hope this helps someone.

21:50 that distortion is generated by the timecode track. Every VHS tape had a Video track (the video), time code track (maintains tape speed, in hours minutes, seconds and frames), and then two audio channel tracks. The time code track would be right below the Video track and signal would often bleed into the video track and as Jamie said it was often get cut off by most VCRs.

Beautiful tutorial! I've been trying to find a tutorial for a late 70s inspired 'punk tape'. I was a bit skeptical about the Premiere only approach since I'm used to hopping into After Effects to make adjustments that go beyond Lumetri adjustments, but the result turned out SO much better than what I got with the other tutorials I've tried! Might still transfer and recreate your process in After Effects to save on rendering time in the end (it is quite fx heavy indeed and rendering out previews was painful), but anyway, THANKS JAMIE!! You're a life saver! 👌

I'm going in 43 (2023) and I have been fiddling with a small list of software to do this kind of affects on videos I have been wanting to do. Now the time has come for me to dig out all my old notes and apply some of these affects. This software has come a long way since a few uears back. It will be fun and interesting to download this software and use it to the hilt of cliché retro. Video was very interesting and informative, thanks foe putting all the work on your videos, they really are of use.
This effect really convinced me, because I missed the part where you import the footage of your daughter into the timeline and after seeing it with all the effects I thought it was one of your old home VHS footage.

I would not be opposed to having two separate videos- one for the VHS assets and tips and one for the 16mm. I used the VHS on a creative project a month ago and now I'm playing with the 16mm and its a little cumbersome scanning back and forth looking for the relevant content.
I swear this is nearly a completely different video from when I first watched it a month ago (I return to it whenever I use the assets to refresh on all your pointers)
Brilliant work! I bought your first installment of retro assets and I'm thoroughly impressed! It has made me hyper-aware of all the intricacies of old film "imperfections," and I'm constantly studying old movies now to emulate those effects in post! This new asset pack is on my wishlist (for the 16mm emulations alone!). However, one thing I noticed from the last pack of assets is that the jitters and flickers occur the same way every time in the MOGRTs (especially noticeable in titles with text). For instance, text jitters and drifts in the same pattern every time and becomes apparent when the title is applied multiple places in the same production. Even the film dust overlay starts to feel familiar if looped more than once. I've tried making the MOGRTs feel fresh by slowing down the duration and/or putting them in reverse speed, or splitting one instance of film dust and rearranging the order on the timeline. And for some of the text titles, I feel limited when some of them have built-in film grain; I wish I had greater control there. Do you have any tips for making the assets feel more organic and less like I dragged an effect or a 30s overlay onto my footage? Maybe the answer lies in creating my own in After Effects, but I would love your input on having even more control over the asset pack. Not knocking your work, but wishing I could fine-tune even more. I appreciate all you've done to enhance people's photo/video experiences!
Thanks for the feedback, this is very useful. The jittering is meant to be generated randomly, but clearly this isn’t with MOGRTs. Moving forward, I can fix this by adding more sliders for control over the parameters.
It’s kind of ironic that I set out making this pack to be a VHS-only pack, and then I made the 16mm emulations, and now they’re probably my favourite thing in the pack.
These are absolutely amazing! Ive noticed a few of the VHS plugins I purchased have a length /trim limit when i drag in (ie, the length of my clip is longer than the effect so it doesnt last entire duration. I am still relatively new at Premiere but am I doing something wrong or is there another workaround to this?

I have a simple question: Will this pack work with a pre-set sequence setting with a 1440x1080 aspect ratio? I prefer my videos in 4:3 rather than 16:9 with the black bars added. Thanks again!
@@crispydoodles Yes, you can resize the asset to fill the frame to remove the black bars. Switch on the 4:3 option in the panel and all your screen elements will be on the correct place.

I hear you, but unfortunately Final Cut isn’t capable of supporting the effects I use to create these. The effects I use are part of Adobe’s software, there’s no external software or plugins to install. If Final Cut was capable of everything After Effects could do, I would definitely make a version of this for FC. But right now it would have to involve making an external plugin (and I’m not a software engineer unfortunately). Never say never, but right now it’s not a possibility. Sorry.

They're not programs I use I'm afraid, so no immediate plans for anything like this in Final Cut or DaVinci Resolve. This isn't a plugin, but rather an inbuilt feature in Adobe software that allows people to use After Effects features in Premiere Pro.
in regards to the Premiere tutorial (no pack) how would I go about saving everything as one preset? I know I can do this on one clip by going to effect controls and highlighting each effect, right clicking all of them and then selecting 'save preset' but since the effects are spread out across 2 video clips, the 2 colour mattes and the adjustment layer, is it possible to select everything and save it as one preset? Thanks

Is there some feature that will make your settings continuously variable? I know you can key frame it, but that is a hassle. I was thinking of an LFO type of thing, only for video.
I really love this! The only thing I noticed is that the real VHS footage is not only blurry, but also aliased. Are there downscale and upscale filters in Premiere Pro? Maybe slightly soften it, then downscale it to a fixed resolution of maybe 240p, do all those effects (which would now always take the same fixed values, because it's always the same resolution) and then upscale it again to 1080p (or whatever) at the end. Using crude interpolation methods both times, if any. I guess that would make things needlessly complicated, as it does look great as it is, but it would take it just a touch closer to realism, at the further expense of visual clarity. Thanks for this!
Do you mean interlaced? Badly deinterlaced video has an alternating horizontal line effect where the two fields are shown at once. This isn’t part of the VHS look though, this is VHS that has been transferred to digital without being deinterlaced properly.
I bough tte pack and love it! Question though: You mentioned being able to pull your whole timeline into one of the 16mm profiles. How does one do that? So far, I can only seem to drag individual clips. Cheers!
It's just a cut of captured footage from old VHS tapes I had. Often when you recorded over something already on the tape, there would be a glitch where it cuts back to what's underneath. I just sampled a load of those frames and put them all together. It's one of the assets in the downloadable pack. Sometimes I also overlay the glitch footage and just roll the clip underneath with vertical transform keyframes.
Can you drag and drop multiple video clips into the graphics? For example I’m trying to do this with Home Video 2 but it only allows be to use one clip.
Make a timeline with your clips in and then drop that into the media replacement window. Alternatively, just cut the MOGRT with the razor tool, specify your in and out points and drop a second clip in after the cut.
You could either zoom in or flip it 90 degrees. This pack was designed for 16:9 aspect ratio, though. Im currently working on a pack for vertical video which will be released in the not too distant future.
i find the 16mm look you did quite interesting, but im curious if you used a high end camera to start off with the initial footage (before applying the look elements), or just a regular camera.. i mean, if it was a7siii, or a bmpcc... then i would be less impressed...
It was very basic. I used a combination of a canon point-and-shoot (G7X), mobile phone footage and a Canon DSLR. In actuality the better quality the camera, the less 16mm the output looks. I think this is because 16mm cameras tended not to be super sharp and achieve super-shallow depths of field.
Not unless you zoom in. It’s a bit of a tricky one as they are made by sampling real video tape which means it’s 4:3 (or 16:9 if you stretch it slightly). You can’t just rotate the video as it wouldn’t look right. The distortion is very much a horizontal thing so it would look like video turned on it’s side. I was thinking about making a pack for vertical video. But this would involve creating new sampled footage by chopping up the frame and putting it back together in 9:16 format.
Hey! I've bought and tried to use the pack, but have two questions: What is the resolution of those effects? Is it 4K friendly? Also, some effects last only for a few minutes. Can we extend them to match the duration of longer videos? Sorry if that's not the right place to ask that. Congrats for all the very useful videos and packs you've been making, you've helped me a lot in my photography and video editing hobby practice over the years! :)
Hi. The resolution is HD for all these. I saw no point in making 4K versions this time as I'm working with sampled video from standard definition VHS captures and soft 16mm film emulations. The user might as well just scale up the effects themselves so save on rendering times and file size. It will look the same. Any scalable effects will render at the size they're scaled up to. With regards to the length, from feedback it does seems that people want longer-running effects. Moving forwards, this is what I'll do. I've already amended the pack to add in some 30-minute versions. My only worry with this is that it might give people the wrong idea on how to use them. I don't recommend editing a big sequence and then dropping the whole thing into a media replacement MOGRT, but rather to apply one MOGRT per clip to make sure that your exposure, colour balance, distortion, softness etc is all working how you want it to. It's a shame that MOGRTS have to be a pre-set length and can't be determined by the user. If you want to place a piece of media into an effect you want to run for longer, the workaround would be just to keep laying the MOGRTs end-to-end on your timeline and starting the next clip from where the previous one left off using In and Out markers.

I'm trying to use these in Premiere Pro and it makes the playback so slow and laggy, but in your video, the playback is smooth and unaffected. How do I fix this?
This is a difficult question to answer without knowing much about your setup and what you're trying to do. Ultimately, while these MOGRTs are pretty well optimised for the amount they do, there will always be a limit to how much your computer can handle before it starts to slow down. Using lesser compressed clips like ProRes will take less processing power than a codec like MP4, which should make it run faster. It should all play back fine if you render the clips in your timeline as you go (if the bar above the clip is red, it's unrendered. It will go green if you render it).
It’s a pixel font I made. It’s in the pack. There are other free ones you can get online. The one I made has play/pause/rewind etc icons as part of it.

That wouldn’t work as the effects wouldn’t be applied to the video, but rather to a blank track laid over the top. But you could drag the timeline you created into the essential graphics window.
It's applying a lot of effects to your footage to achieve the look. Depending on the speed of your computer, the type of processor you have, your graphics card etc, it can have trouble previewing smoothly without rendering it first. There's no way around it unfortunately.
Hi. These are designed to work with a 16:9 ratio. They will scale to different sizes, but if you try to use them on 9:16 video, they would need to be cropped or rotated. With the increasing popularity of 'vertical' video, my upcoming set of retro MOGRTs has both landscape and portrait versions. But they need to be completely built from scratch. The main problem being is that these work with sampled footage, and VHS was 4:3.
@@isaacwhite8301 The only options are to either rotate them 90° or to crop in. These ones aren’t designed for vertical video, but I’m working on a new set that are.
No plans at present to make these for Resolve I'm afraid. It's not a program I know. These aren't plug-ins, they are made using Adobe's native features from After Effects, so I'm not even sure if it's possible to replicate them in other programs.
How much of a pain is it if your project is already edited? Can I import the entire timeline and be able to still edit the light and color on each individual clip?

@@TheSlimDuffyShow Well, you could piece them together, one after the other, and cut your film into 5 minutes sections. Or extend the length of the MOGRT by using After Effects (if you have that and know how to use it). It's a little tricky as I could make a 2-hour length 16mm emulation, but that would mean that people would be dragging a 2-hour clip into their sequences, when most people will probably just be using the effect on short pieces of footage. It's not really what the MOGRT feature is meant for. I just realised it could work as an emulation as well as adding customisable motion graphics. I meant for the effect to be applied to a single shot at a time rather than a finished, edited piece of video. However, there's nothing to say it couldn't be used that way. But I would expect that you would need to tweak individual shots to get the best results out of it.

Is there some feature that will make your settings continuously variable? I know you can key frame it, but that is a hassle. I was thinking of an LFO type of thing, only for video.
You’d probably be able to set something up in after effects with some scripting, but not in premiere.

The only thing I noticed is that the real VHS footage is not only blurry, but also aliased. Are there downscale and upscale filters in Premiere Pro?
Maybe slightly soften it, then downscale it to a fixed resolution of maybe 240p, do all those effects (which would now always take the same fixed values, because it's always the same resolution) and then upscale it again to 1080p (or whatever) at the end. Using crude interpolation methods both times, if any.
I guess that would make things needlessly complicated, as it does look great as it is, but it would take it just a touch closer to realism, at the further expense of visual clarity.

Do you mean interlaced? Badly deinterlaced video has an alternating horizontal line effect where the two fields are shown at once. This isn’t part of the VHS look though, this is VHS that has been transferred to digital without being deinterlaced properly.

I bough tte pack and love it! Question though: You mentioned being able to pull your whole timeline into one of the 16mm profiles. How does one do that? So far, I can only seem to drag individual clips. Cheers!
You just drag your sequence into the essential graphics media replacement window, like you would individual clips.

How did you do these glich transitions between the clips? Is there any video where it is explained? :) Awesome CZcams channel!
It's just a cut of captured footage from old VHS tapes I had. Often when you recorded over something already on the tape, there would be a glitch where it cuts back to what's underneath. I just sampled a load of those frames and put them all together. It's one of the assets in the downloadable pack. Sometimes I also overlay the glitch footage and just roll the clip underneath with vertical transform keyframes.

Can you drag and drop multiple video clips into the graphics? For example I’m trying to do this with Home Video 2 but it only allows be to use one clip.
Make a timeline with your clips in and then drop that into the media replacement window. Alternatively, just cut the MOGRT with the razor tool, specify your in and out points and drop a second clip in after the cut.

You could either zoom in or flip it 90 degrees. This pack was designed for 16:9 aspect ratio, though. Im currently working on a pack for vertical video which will be released in the not too distant future.

i find the 16mm look you did quite interesting, but im curious if you used a high end camera to start off with the initial footage (before applying the look elements), or just a regular camera.. i mean, if it was a7siii, or a bmpcc... then i would be less impressed...
It was very basic. I used a combination of a canon point-and-shoot (G7X), mobile phone footage and a Canon DSLR. In actuality the better quality the camera, the less 16mm the output looks. I think this is because 16mm cameras tended not to be super sharp and achieve super-shallow depths of field.

Not unless you zoom in. It’s a bit of a tricky one as they are made by sampling real video tape which means it’s 4:3 (or 16:9 if you stretch it slightly). You can’t just rotate the video as it wouldn’t look right. The distortion is very much a horizontal thing so it would look like video turned on it’s side.
I was thinking about making a pack for vertical video. But this would involve creating new sampled footage by chopping up the frame and putting it back together in 9:16 format.

What is the resolution of those effects? Is it 4K friendly?
Also, some effects last only for a few minutes. Can we extend them to match the duration of longer videos?

Hi. The resolution is HD for all these. I saw no point in making 4K versions this time as I'm working with sampled video from standard definition VHS captures and soft 16mm film emulations. The user might as well just scale up the effects themselves so save on rendering times and file size. It will look the same. Any scalable effects will render at the size they're scaled up to.
With regards to the length, from feedback it does seems that people want longer-running effects. Moving forwards, this is what I'll do. I've already amended the pack to add in some 30-minute versions. My only worry with this is that it might give people the wrong idea on how to use them. I don't recommend editing a big sequence and then dropping the whole thing into a media replacement MOGRT, but rather to apply one MOGRT per clip to make sure that your exposure, colour balance, distortion, softness etc is all working how you want it to. It's a shame that MOGRTS have to be a pre-set length and can't be determined by the user. If you want to place a piece of media into an effect you want to run for longer, the workaround would be just to keep laying the MOGRTs end-to-end on your timeline and starting the next clip from where the previous one left off using In and Out markers.

I'm trying to use these in Premiere Pro and it makes the playback so slow and laggy, but in your video, the playback is smooth and unaffected. How do I fix this?
This is a difficult question to answer without knowing much about your setup and what you're trying to do. Ultimately, while these MOGRTs are pretty well optimised for the amount they do, there will always be a limit to how much your computer can handle before it starts to slow down. Using lesser compressed clips like ProRes will take less processing power than a codec like MP4, which should make it run faster. It should all play back fine if you render the clips in your timeline as you go (if the bar above the clip is red, it's unrendered. It will go green if you render it).

It’s a pixel font I made. It’s in the pack. There are other free ones you can get online. The one I made has play/pause/rewind etc icons as part of it.

That wouldn’t work as the effects wouldn’t be applied to the video, but rather to a blank track laid over the top. But you could drag the timeline you created into the essential graphics window.

does it make any one else's footage very laggy? looks amazing but when looking at it through my timeline it becomes very laggy
It's applying a lot of effects to your footage to achieve the look. Depending on the speed of your computer, the type of processor you have, your graphics card etc, it can have trouble previewing smoothly without rendering it first. There's no way around it unfortunately.
does the .morgt only work with 1920 x 1080p? i'm trying to adjust the size for reels and it's cropping...thanks in advance to anyone who can help
Hi. These are designed to work with a 16:9 ratio. They will scale to different sizes, but if you try to use them on 9:16 video, they would need to be cropped or rotated. With the increasing popularity of 'vertical' video, my upcoming set of retro MOGRTs has both landscape and portrait versions. But they need to be completely built from scratch. The main problem being is that these work with sampled footage, and VHS was 4:3.
Is there any way to make the current ones work in a vertical aspect ratio? @@jamiewindsor
@@isaacwhite8301 The only options are to either rotate them 90° or to crop in. These ones aren’t designed for vertical video, but I’m working on a new set that are.

No plans at present to make these for Resolve I'm afraid. It's not a program I know. These aren't plug-ins, they are made using Adobe's native features from After Effects, so I'm not even sure if it's possible to replicate them in other programs.

You can if you add scale keyframes to your timeline and then drop the timeline into the media replacement window.
How much of a pain is it if your project is already edited? Can I import the entire timeline and be able to still edit the light and color on each individual clip?
Yes. You can drag the whole timeline in and still edit it and drag it in again to update.

@@TheSlimDuffyShow Well, you could piece them together, one after the other, and cut your film into 5 minutes sections. Or extend the length of the MOGRT by using After Effects (if you have that and know how to use it). It's a little tricky as I could make a 2-hour length 16mm emulation, but that would mean that people would be dragging a 2-hour clip into their sequences, when most people will probably just be using the effect on short pieces of footage. It's not really what the MOGRT feature is meant for. I just realised it could work as an emulation as well as adding customisable motion graphics. I meant for the effect to be applied to a single shot at a time rather than a finished, edited piece of video. However, there's nothing to say it couldn't be used that way. But I would expect that you would need to tweak individual shots to get the best results out of it.
