alot of people should read this book it is such a compelling vision from this man

Early on ( and possibly to this day ) publishing was closely related to organized crime . National ( DC Comics ) was owned by mobsters . Kirby was a legit war hero and top tier talent . He wasn't a deity by any means but there's no reason to connect him to organized crime .

Wish he had had a good inker for this. He had the best inkers for the eternals.

Thanks for this video. I loved watching her interview on NMC recently and can’t wait for her run to be collected next year. I came to DD during Born Again and continued to read the Nocenti run regularly afterwards. However, because I was a kid and her run wasn’t much of a typical superhero book, I lost interest and didn’t fully appreciate it till I was an adult.

I've been a fan of Mike and Laura since I discovered a battered Madman graphic novel in my town library back over twenty years ago. That find led me to the comic shop where I would eventually work, where I bought up as much Madman material as I could find. Then I became a regular on his old message board and had regular discussions with him, his editor pal, and others in that small group of fans. I would say that I am a fan of Madman from the earliest stories up to the end of the Dark Horse run. After that I collected and read what Mike put out, but I found the story and character development material to be drifting away from what I enjoyed most. I still love that early chunk of Madman so much, but I have no hope of Mike ever bringing the character back to the tone of those early days. I am glad that Mike and Laura have gone on to great success, though, and I hope they have the best possible lives going forward.

I think Kirby's mastery of visual storytelling is just starting to be seriously examined outside of the comic book world (and some of the childish criticisms and analysis I've seen on other channels). When you talk about Kirby you have to also account for the other masters of his time as well. This critique is a very good start. Good job!

I hate Mr Chaykin in that he did not have longevity in his works. Either by the tempo of the job or he would get bored with his projects. A great long run, many graphic novels, or years of a comics run are sorely missed. From his Star Wars work to American Gothic to Time Squared. Black Kiss is spectacularly vulgar, still sold in Porn Shops, and funny.

Got the Madman card deck.. it’s so fun to flip through. So many legends drawing madman is one of the most inspiring experiences as a creator.

Jack Kirby is the single most important figure in all of comics. Jack Kirby is head and shoulders above all others in comics. From the early 1940s to the early 1990s, Jack Kirby kept on trail blazing, breaking new ground, evolving, learning and contributing. Everyone in comics owes a debt to this man. His genius will influence generations to come in comics, art and storytelling on general. Long live Jack The King Kirby!

i still have 2figures through the years of Usagi Yojimbo one in samurai armor and the tall one with the Geishu clan kimono and swords as well i plan on getting as many as i possibly can Usagi has a great impact on my life like Frank Herbert's DUNE i read when i was 4 years old and understood it from end to end when other kids was reading highlights and Dr.Seuss i was in deep into the story of Paul Atreides, and this is the biggest reason why i really love Usagi Yojimbo in all facets of his story even if Stan San made a comic of Usagi Yojimbo being a surfer or a SLIDER aka dimensional traveler full time i would love to see them all, even if Usagi had his own AM and FM radio Channel and even if it is all staticy id listen to it all day and night doing narrations of his adventures like the classic old time radio shows from the 1930's and 40's id record all fo them.

OH MY GIGACHU THAT COOL HUGE PLUSH OR SUIT OF Usagi Yojimbo WOULD BE AN ULTRA TREASURE, i really love the cyan coloring on Usagi in the panel that is being used in the background im grateful to Stan Sakai San for this beautiful comic storyline and visual novels you can learn so much from each novel a sweet blessed treasure they all are, i tried to draw something to honor Usagi Yojimbo to honor him i tried several times but i think i might have made something that would honor the character i hope fingers crossed i always take my time one them too and the credit goes to Stan San, just something from the heart and to say thank you to him for being a great inspiration, and id never use someone else's creation for profit either that would just be wrong and i don't do that, and id never dishonor Usagi by going after a show made for children id watch it cause i always cared for Usagi Yojimbo, i watch as well cause im a life long animation connoisseur a sci fi fanatic and also i love the great story premise of Usagi's descendants, the overall story in all im no man baby im just an artist who appreciates great art and story one day when i do have children id read all of the novels and series to them i just hope Netflix did not stiff Sakai San like they have done with many series over the years.

Ok, so ive seen two golden age comics now where the axis powers tunnel to the us for a invasion attempt only to get stopped by a heroe/s, if i find a third example its a pattern

The question of who is the actual "world's fastest cartoonist" interests me quite a bit- I've read about some quite extreme speed, like that of Rumiko Takahashi, who could write and draw 19 pages in 3 days, or Yoshihiro Tatsumi, who drew a 120+ graphic novel (Black Blizzard) in 20 days.

I'm quite late here, but that "printing error" may be a restoration of the double page spread that was originally pencilled and inked for # 6. There's a reduction in story pages from the previous issue and it could've been a late decision. It happened when DC reprinted the Demon hardcover I have and Mark Evanier notes in the introduction that art that had been cut out was restored for the reprint.

Wait wait wait. I'm very surprised to see that Jack was interviewed by Larry Ditillio who I know from roleplaying games!

I have personally been a Jack Kirby fan since I was 7, in 1973 I read my first reprint of the fantastic four it was the blastarr and sandman team up to fight the FF . I was hooked. Now I did not discover the new world stuff till I was in my teens. There were no comic book shops on every corner in the 70’s So my first experience of the new gods was from my friends dad who in his late 30’s would not only read the comics and share his comics with his son and I. But he in his kitchen would act out the story and even make up stories about jack’s characters. His son and I were captivated and it was his love for Kirby that to this day makes me to be not embarrassed being a comic book fan, but to be proud of it. I am now 58 and I still am a 12 year old boy being swept away by jack’s amazing imagination and talent to bring them to life. Thank you to both Mr Davis for being a free spirit and not afraid to share it. And to Jack that has given me more enjoyment in my life than I can reflect in any amount of words. Long live the king.

I remember playing Usagi Yojimbo on the Commodore 64. Been fascinated ever since. I even have his first TMNT action figure.
