    Thank you! I've actually been afraid to sign up for a 5K because my pace is still around 13.5 min/mi (8/34 min/km) and thought I should be faster. I want to run a marathon someday. But we're all going the distance no matter what pace we do!

    Very informative vid. I'm about to do a full marathon in a month but have not been consistently training due do a lingering injury. Can you recommend a run walk ratio? Would a 5:1 ratio be advisable? Thanks

    I just did a hot hilly half, in total I walked 35 mins and came out at 2.29.48.. I don't technically Jeff but because I sometimes do ultras ( no more than 35 miles) I have a walk the hills agenda... At 8 miles I decided that small bumps were hills 😂funny thing was, last year when I was fitter and ran much more of it I was only 9 mins faster... Nobody needs to run up a hill x

    It is my opinion, and since I express it, it is obvious that Hebe accepts that everyone expresses theirs, even if they do not agree with it. But saying that running and walking is running, or that you “ran” a marathon in 7 hours, or similar… for me it is not running or competing in a race. That you finish it because in some cases there is time for them, I accept the premise. But it is not running or “competing” that race. No one would consider it normal that in a 1,500 on the track or a mile (on the track or urban), or a 5000, one competed or ran with the limit of the course or distance being walked. Another thing is to accept that a long distance is admirable to complete, especially depending on one's state of fitness, since (in the case of the marathon, for example) walking 42-43 kilometers at once is already a considerable distance. But it doesn't seem fair to me that those who run a marathon in 4-5 hours are assimilated and equal to those who do it in 7 or twice as long as those who run 4-5 hours. Yes, the distance is the same, but the effort and dedication that the first ones used in preparing or completing it would not be objectively fair to equate it. It is like someone who climbs a 30-story building in an elevator or escalator and someone who takes the stairs: they climb the same floors, but they have not made the same effort (at the same or almost equal level of physical fitness). What has been said is my opinion.

    What shoe do you use as a slow runner Emily? I find foot pain to be the issue with being a slower runner and spending more time walking. At some point running kinda alleviates the foot pain you get from walking.

    I did the Leeds half in the same crazy heat, it's hard but you just need to soak your head. I did a sub-2 HR but enjoyed the crowd with lots of high-fives and jokingly about. You're right,if you're not enjoying it take it easy.... you're there to have some fun on the way to the finish line.

    Hello girl❤I ran last Sunday my half marathon and it was horribly hot😢 people with water hoses were keeping us cool on the go. Quite some people fainted also...I am so glad I made it to the end even if I was way slower than my normal running time. Good job!!!!@🎉🎉🎉

    Great job! Just curious, have you ever used Jeff Galloways run/walk calculator to come up with a good ratio? He also mentions that the earliest walk breaks are the most important as they erase fatigue. I generally run most of my half marathons with a 60 second run, 30 second walk ratio and have run most of my half marathons between 2 hours and 20 to to hours and 40 minutes. If it gets too hot Galloway says to slow down about 30 seconds every 3 degrees above 15.5. Based on that rule of thumb, you would have gotten a PB if it wasn't for the heat.

      @Runswithemily Jeff Galloway says that after 30 seconds, the walk benefit is less effective. Ironically, I think less about the walk break with the shorter intervals. I recommend experimenting with it. Do a search for podcasts with Galloway as he gives really good explanations.

    excellent work, well done you!! That heat was no joke this weekend. I did Goring half marathon (trail) on Sunday and my plan also went out the window about 1 mile in. I just did what I could by feel and got around unscathed in 3 hours 17. Not the time I was quite hoping for but i'll take it. One tip for running in the heat is to have a bandana soaked in cold water wrapped around your wrist or neck, it does help cool you down (and if you live close or have friends coming to support, if they can bring some ice cubes to put in the bandana and roll up that *really* helps!) :) x

    I ran my first half marathon Sunday and it was the toughest run I have ever done. Even though I was prepared fitness wise I had never run in the heat and it hit me bad! 91% of my run was in zone 5! I now know I need to train more in the sun! Well done on your run!

    Running in the heat is no joke. It feels ten degrees hotter than it is. I ran my first ultra marathon in this heat..33 miles…it took me ages…it was trail, 21 hills and hot hot hot. Never drank so much in my life! It was HARD so feel your pain! I am still in disbelief that I did it. Well done you. I am not a summer runner!!!

    Well done Emily ❤ I did HH for the 2nd time this year and wasn’t certain during I’d finish. So hot and much hillier than I’d remembered. So many people passed out 😢 glad you stayed safe. My time went out the window in the first 4k 😂

    Walking is not only an option. It is a very clever strategy. I'm doing Run/Walk from the very beginning of every run. Jeff recommends a 60sec/30sec ratio for a 7min/km. Have you tried this?

    Well done! I did a hm like that where it was so hot and people were taken ill, it was a bit scary so I really slowed down. I also find that the effort is much harder in heat especially when it has got hotter suddenly. You did great!

    I felt the same for my first half marathon. Too hot and humid and not enough training. Made it under 3 hours just and was done. Walked the last 5km.

    Well done Emily. Great running. My hot weather running game changer is a "cool towel" . You soak it in coldwater, slightly wring it out and wrap it around your neck/shoulders. I even freeze mine over night. It doesnt take long to thaw out enough to be bendy. It keeps you really cool. As it warms up you simply shake it out and it cools down again. Its magic. Mine is from Dock & Bay, but amazon do them in multi packs alot more cheaply.

    You two queens totally slaaaaayed that half! 👏🏻🙌🏻 Oooh and I feel ya with the heat! When I ran Prague Half, it was 25 degrees and it makes running sooo much harder. 😭 The same situation with ambulances and people passing out, it really messes with your head seeing them, not wanting to end up like them, but feeling like you might, lol. I was so grateful that I had my silly little vest with my own water that had electrolytes in! Saved my 🍑.

    I wear my running vest almost any time I do something outside. Hiking, walking, running, and more recently I've discovered that it's PERFECT for gardening! Why wouldn't I want to wear something that gives me extra pockets, AND a water pouch on the back?? Yes pleeeease.
