We three Green Kings
zhlédnutí 121Před 4 měsíci
Based upon two Christmas carols, the verse melody from "We three Kings of Orient are" is paired with "What Child is this?" normally sung to the tune Greensleeves. The idea for this arrangement of We three Kings begun whilst playing before a service in December. Set in quadruple rather than triple time, this tempo maybe reflects more accurately the Andantino pace of the Wise Men's journey to Bet...

Three Blind Mice

Based upon a solo passage from the verse anthem If ye be risen again with Christ by Orlando Gibbons, the tune to Three Blind Mice co-exists happily along side it. Originally written as a round by his contemporary Thomas Ravenscroft, the second half of this arrangement uses a sampled mellotron for the string section.

God be with you till we meet again (words by Jeremiah Rankin) is composed by Ralph Vaughan Williams (tune Randolph). Put together during summer 2022, it was an end of term hymn we used to sing at school. The tune conveniently merges with English Country Garden by Percy Grainger. I recall we used to enjoy singing the words "with you till we" in a rushed manner, hence the more lively tempo in thi...

Picardy (instrumental)

Instrumental arrangement of the traditional hymn tune "Picardy" based upon a French Carol, and originally used for the folk tune "Jésus-Christ s'habille en pauvre". The hymn text "Let all mortal Flesh keep silence" is normally sung to this tune in most hymnals. Usually sung at a more sombre tempo, here is a more dance-like interpretation maybe in the style of the original carol?

I love that melody and it sounds great in this version

  • @TheRefinedGentleman

This oddly works, and I can totally see this tune being performed this way originally, especially if it was more secular/folk to begin with. The tune to ding dong merrily on high is somewhat similar too, given it was originally a dance tune. Playing it faster you can see it as a dance tune, but slowing it down makes it work better as a joyful song about Christmas.

It shows a melody ,however basic , can be arranged to 'lighten up' a musical , or devotional experience.

  • @petergeorgedirector4

Oh dear, am lost for words. Apologies to anyone who sought comments like 'how nice'. Reminded me of one of those call centres where the same incessantly saccharin tune is played to the increasingly impatient caller before it cuts in with "we are experiencing an exceptionally high volume of calls". Better with some Coverdale text of course. Although King Edward VII's reign wasn't especially celebrated for compositional excellence, it did include outstanding 'greats' such as Stanford, Parry, Elgar, Vaughan Williams and Charles Wood. Mr Parratt's strengths were perhaps more as a teacher and organist, sometime at St George's Windsor and as Master of The King's Music after holding the equivalent post in Queen Victoria's reign.

My great-grandfather was a military chaplain in World War One. I am researching his life - he wrote an article in Welsh, published in Y Tyst in 1916, describing being awoken in the middle of the night to the sound of singing of a hymn, and he quoted a few lines from the hymn - "Cyfaill yw yn afon angau : Ddeil fy m'len i uwch y don, Golwg arno wna i mi ganu, Yn yr afon ddofon hon." I googled these lines, and came up with a hymn called "Ton-y-Botel", then googled Ton-y-Botel and found this video. Is this the same hymn that he was quoting? I think they are singing in English? The Google Translate version of those Welsh lines are: "A friend is the river of death: Let my curtain be above the wave; The sight of him makes me sing, In this deep river"

Who is this with garments gory, triumphing from Bozrah's way; this that weareth robes of glory, bright with more than victory's ray? Who is this unwearied comer from his journey's sultry length, traveling through Idumé's summer in the greatness of his strength? Wherefore red in thine apparel like the conquerors of earth, and arrayed like those who carol o'er the reeking vineyard's mirth? Who art thou, the valleys seeking where our peaceful harvests wave? "I, in righteous anger speaking, I, the mighty One to save; "I, that of the raging heathen trod the winepress all alone, now in victor-garlands wreathen coming to redeem mine own: I am he with sprinkled raiment, glorious for my vengeance-hour, ransoming, with priceless payment, and delivering with power." Hail! All hail! Thou Lord of Glory! Thee, our Father, thee we own; Abram heard not of our story, Israel ne'er our name hath known. But, Redeemer, thou hast sought us, thou hast heard thy children's wail, thou with thy dear Blood hast bought us: Hail! Thou mighty Victor, hail!
