Taltos: Spoiler-Free & Spoiler Book Review // Dig It Or Bury It? // Diggerdan Reads

Today I discuss my thoughts on Taltos by Steven Brust. "Journey to the land of the dead. All expenses paid! Not my idea of an ideal vacation, but this was work. After all, even an assassin has to earn a living. The trouble is, everyone knows that a living human cannot walk the Paths of the Dead, and return, alive, to the land of men. Nice, I'm glad you like the prose. I think Robert Jordan's prose is best for highly visual readers. IDK but people seem to be all over the place on rating it. Also it just has so much content. All the modern fantasy I read feels like fluff if it's a long book

    1:13:20 for Mistborn. For me it was a low 3.5/5 for me but books 2 and 3 got successively better for me 4.25 and 4.5 respectively. 😊 It was my favorite TRILOGY until I read Age of Madness 😅

  • @Harldin
    @Harldin Před 11 dny

    Book 2 hooked me big time, currently reading Mistborn for the first time. Started reading WOT in the 90s, so waited for books. Got frustrated with the slog. The only group in WOT I wasn't overly in love with was the Seafolk, thought they were written as too arrogant and unlikeable. My opinion of Mat changed after he woke up in the WT post healing, he was a very different character from then and become my fav. I loved Mats relationship with Nynaeve, they were far from being friends and yet both would assault the Bore to save the other, while grumbling and bitching about the having to do it. Spoiler There is a scene between Rand and Mat, I think it was outside of Carhien City and Mat was leaving and Mat said to Rand "be careful of Egwene she has left Emonds Field further behind than any of us and regrets it less"

    • @DiggerdanReads
      @DiggerdanReads Před 10 dny

      I agree! I think the Seafolk were overly arrogant and just plain rude. That's true, Mat and Nynaeve do have a great relationship in that regard. Yes! That is a fantastic line from Mat, and I think goes to show that he is a deeper thinker than some people may give him credit for

  • @christopherensminger1106

    The reason bazil got the name broke tail was because his tail was broke. That broken tail was why he could use the sword. Other dragons used maces and a few other dragons used swords. The mighty purple green dragon was awesome. It's been over 30 years since I read the book. You have a nice channel! If didn't like the 1st book don't torture yourself with the others!

    • @DiggerdanReads
      @DiggerdanReads Před 10 dny

      I understand that some dragons used different weapons than other dragons with their tails. What I was complaining about was that in some battles a dragon would use one weapon with their tail, than in the next line the same dragon would suddenly be using a different tail weapon with no explanation. Thanks Christopher! Yeah, we'll see if I ever continue the series

    Big day is coming. Congrats! And congrats on the promotion. With the new baby and the longer commute, you might want to consider mixing in audiobooks a bit. The Vlad Taltos series has a great narrator, Bernard Setaro Clark (My favorite audiobook reader). Wheel of Time has Michael Kramer and Kate Reading and they're pretty great. There is also a new one with Rosamund Pike from the show reading. Might be good, I don't know just have to make sure you pick the one you want. Other stand-out audiobooks in my opinion are Abercrombie's First Law Books and Dinnaman's Dungeon Crawler Carls books.

It's been a real pleasure getting to know you in the past few months :) For your commute, I would suggest audiobooks! When I used to have like 1.5-2 hours of commute a day I would devour audio books. I feel called out, and the full collection of unopened wheel of time boxsets is sitting on my shelf to my left taunting me. I was planning on reading WoT as book 10 of my challenge, I'm up to book 7 now, I might bring it up.

      Thank you sir! Yeah not bad but not great. Thanks Benjamin, a very exciting time indeed! Likewise! I feel that we are overdue for our own collab ;) I have started listening to Eye of the World on audio and definitely takes away some of the road rage lol and helps me feel like the commute isn't "wasted time" I 100% called you out. Haha the pain of every reader sympathizes with you. You just might have to!

      Alia is Goat, but she is such a tragic character in Children. That's what I've heard from a couple different people now, I'll have to give it a shot. Especially if Richard enjoyed it lol

    Congrats to you and your wife! Take all the time you need to be present with your family, that is so important! Maybe you can read some of your books outloud to the baby 😊 I misheard MBR as NBR and thought "Not to be read??? First time I've heard of that but sure" 😂 I still count comics/manga towards the # of books I read. Its just a different type of medium, and doesn't mean that it's "less than" books/novels/whatever. I still count novellas, short story collections, etc to my total so why not?

    • @DiggerdanReads
      @DiggerdanReads Před 18 dny

      Thank you Lan! That is a great idea, she can learn all about the Dragon Reborn lol Haha I see how that could be confusing. Sometimes I struggle counting them just because it only takes me 2-3 hours to knock one out. Whereas a full length novel can take me 20-30 hours (depending on length of course). But at the end of the day I agree. I completed a book of some type, why not count it toward the books read total.

    Why do people always have to mention LotR influence for WoT, yet they don't mention Dune everytime Star Wars comes up?

    • @DiggerdanReads
      @DiggerdanReads Před 20 dny

      Ya know... that is a great point. My guess is popularity. I feel LotR is way more popular than WoT and SW is more popular than Dune.

      @DiggerdanReads I agree. I'm currently halfway through book 9 on my first read through. I'm in the heart of the slog, and there is stuff I don't like. But I understand other people will like that sort of stuff. I did enjoy guys' video, though. I also agree with you on Nynaeve, I don't like her either, lol.

      Well all I have to say that the end of the series is worth whatever slog there may be for some. I'm glad you enjoyed it! Haha yeah she's not the greatest imo, but she does have some of my favorite character moments throughout the series.
