I think that the story of Noah could work. If before current humanity there was an ancient civilization that had advanced tools and knowledge. Predicting a worldwide, life obliterating flood, they simply took DNA samples of everything and stored it in a secure location. Then afterwards everything could be regrown and reintroduced !
