First ride thoughts and initial mods on the 450rl.
zhlédnutí 2,2KPřed 6 měsíci
First ride thoughts are I think this bike is exactly what I've been looking for. After modifying the throttle tube and adjusting the idle the bike runs great! totally livable with the stock ECU in my opinion. Tons of low end grunt and pull! The power comes on strong in the beginning / midrange then falls kind of flat up top due to the fuel, intake, and exhaust being corked up. Not having to rev...

Do you still like it?
I have several other bikes and the Krampus is still one of my favorites! Wtb rangers in 3.0 are my tire of choice right now. They roll good and make the bike feel like less of a tank.
Does it fit on a trunk of a car? How wide is it deflated/packed?
Pretty sure I answered you this morning on another post. Really depends on how big your trunk is and if the back seats fold down. Rolled its around 56in wide, 8 to 10 high, and about 2ft long.
Hi there Did you have to use the bolt carrier extension sent with the kit on AR-15 5.56 10.5” ? Thanks
Yes with this folding adapter you must use the bolt carrier extension or it will not function properly. The length of the barrel or caliber does not change this.
@@billingsfmx I’m having problems fitting the extension provided in the BCG for AR-15 PSA 5.56 10.5”
I did follow the instructions but the extension provided does not go all the way in the BCG, I didn’t try to force it using plastic hammer too, not sure if I’ve to do this, I thought it’ll fit in the BCG without friction or force
@@najibdarwich3925 I would take out the bolt carrier and measure the inside hole to make sure it is deep enough and no defects or burrs. Then measure the extension. It should be a tight fit with the orings on the extension. Have you tried putting some oil or lubrication on the extention?
You shouldnt have to force it. I wouldnt use a hammer. Try pushing the folder release button while putting the extension in.
Ec9s and lcp max best rugers eva💯
Loosen the Allen head not on the hinge. Adjust the gap and retighten the allen bolt.
I wish the problem was that easy to fix, theres no adjustment for the hinge. I sent it back to sylvan, they said it was a machining error. They sent me a replacement that was much better. You can see it in the " part 2" video.
How is it holding up? Any manufacturer or defect issues?
Doing good so far. Rubber grips on the paddles are peeling off. They seem kind of cheap but I havemt reached out to their warranty yet
I'm going 13 43 on the gearing. I ride a lot of steep terrain with big rocks, and it's just killing me to have to keep dropping down to first. It bogs in second and raps in first. The gearing kinda sucks on this bike. I'm hoping that 13 43 solves my problem
Yeah lowering the gearing really helped this bikes offroadability and acceleration for sure youll love it. I loved the klx but Im on a Honda 450rl now. That was a hugeeee difference all around!
@billingsfmx I'm loving the bike other than the one issue. I'm also thinking about the 450. I think it might fit my needs better. 👍🏻
Hey bro I just bought one. Does yours lose speed quickly as well? If not do you know how to fix it. Im pretty uneducated on this stuff.
Make sure you tighten up all the castle nuts. There's also an Allen ranch when it's open you gotta tighten up.
Yes make sure everything is tight for sure. I blue lock tight screws and stake my castle nut.
Absolute beauty, ive had Rugers since 2006 theyve never failed me. Just got a max 9
I still love mine! I have a red dot on it now. I didnt think id like it but its awesome! First handgun ive had an optic on.
Bro mine will literally not open it’s like it’s glued shut I don’t know what to do many people have tried to get it to open but it won’t budge
Will it open when removed from the gun? Are you able to open it with the bcg removed? I would contact the manufacture. Its hard to diagnose the issue without the gun in front of me.
@@billingsfmx I haven’t even put it on the gun yet I just took it out of the packaging and tried to open it but it won’t open
Yes that sounds like youneed to contact the manufacturer thats pretty bad.
If I had that, I would spend the night on my lake
Or watch meteor showers!!
Throw and anchor outand you totally could
My lake it like 600ft+ deep, I think I would be at the mercy of the breezes.
@wylde39 hahaha wow that is deep! Definitely go out on a calm day
Does it fit on a trunk? How wide was it deflated out of box approximately?
Hi, I'm quite interested in surly krampus; how tall are you and wich frame size have had you take? Thanks a lot!
Hi there, Im 6.2 with 33inseam and long torso. Im on a large, but I like slightly smaller bikes. I could also fit on an XL. I still love the krampus!!!
These guys are great and they honor their warranty! No arguments no quarrel Ing, even if the fault lies with the manufacturer of the lower, these guys don’t leave you hanging over strip threads due to too much parkerizing threads, causing a strip. On the other hand, Anderson manufacturing has argued with me for a week now even with a video showing their threads differ by 2/3-10s of an inch, that’s the full depth of the thread lol, that awkward moment when Customerservice thinks they know more than a licensed Gunsmith lol.
Yes I agree with you, they were great to deal with and took care of me right away. Gotta have good customer service in todays world.
@@billingsfmx agree 100% I’m not picking on you young folks out there but nothing is more frustrating than when somebody like me, Gen X did my first my first builds before the Bradi bill and pre-band days to have a millennial post a stock photo out of a forum. I happen to be a member of, telling me that I don’t know what I’m doing, so sorry, but I have more time wrenching on all firearms, and loading my own ammunition then this kid has on the planet! Not to mention, he could not offer any schooling or education to prove he knew what he was talking about lol. Not a licensed Gunsmith , I’m licensed as a reloader, I have two Sami certifications, I have a built-in armory at my house, I maintain and take care of a bunch of 22 long rifles for local Boy Scout, and 4H organizations that’s just 50 rifles. I maintain, I build sniper rifles for swat officers and a couple military personnel, I’m a 45 bravo lol so I know what I am doing!!
You definitely have some experience, this was only my 3rd ar build. What do you think was going on with the first folder I got? Sylvan said it was defective not something I was doing wrong. You can see in the follow up vid that the gap was much smaller and locked up way better on the replacement than with the first one I recieved.
Is the bolt extension on your tight i cant pull it out feels really stuck is yours tight as hell?
Mine comes out very easy. Just orings holding it in so shouldnt get stuck. With the brace or stock folded open you need to push the folder button then pull back the charging handle to expose the bolt extension and remove it from the bolt carrier. If you dont push the button first the charging handle isnt able to be pulled back by design.
@@billingsfmx yes i tried that and the extension still wont comeout it stuck in the bcg
Maybe see if putting the bcg in the freezer helps. A strap wrench may be worth a try as well.
Can you put the link for the iwb holster you are using for the max9

I had a 23 450RL. Couldnt take the throttle twitch even with a G2 tamer. Not putting an extra grand or more into a 10k dual sport. Needless to say, it's already gone. Bro had a klx300. Great starter bike, and that's about it.
My last bike was a klx 300, it was fun for what it is. Im have no issues with the way my 450rl rides, its not perfect but im happy. I modified the stock throttle tube and took the airbox lid off. It seems to be getting smoother with more miles on the bike as well. What bike are you riding now? Id like to see kawasaki and yamaha make a serious dual sport.
@billingsfmx currently riding a 2024 transalp 750. It's much better suited to the adventure riding we do. Bro got a T7. They're wildly different bikes. Each offer their own special attributes to the ride.
Yeah I like the t7 if I was going to do longer touring stuff. The perfect bike all depends on the riding you plan to do thats for sure.
Honda should have fixed all the issues but its a Honda and I love my 23 CRL 450RL. Enjoy the bike it worth it.
Yes I love the bike! Its so much fun!!!
Have you done any mods yet? Any plans?
@@billingsfmx I am currently working in Saudi Arabia this June will be able to put more miles on it . Has 1044 just a baby
im like you ,,i dont like that gap and the play in it and what brand sling was that you had on it
Yeah it was an early version that had an issue. Sylvan sent me a replacement that was much better. You can see it in my "part 2" video. A very small unnoticeable 1mm gap or so is needed for it to latch properly. I havent had any issues since. The Sling is made by GrovTec.
Cool noch ein vidio bitte darüber mini bmx plese
Neither Surly's front or rear rack fit the Krampus. I'm surprised their website claims compatibility. The TopPeak 29r Disk will fit the rear and it's 1/3rd the price.
I have the surly 8 pack rack and it fits my Krampus just fine. I have a video on it. I also have a Topeak rear rack it fits good as well. I like the rack system more than the seat bag especially since I have a dropper post.
glad i watched this. was gonna buy one until you told me it was made in israel. glad i didnt
Ive seen a few other similar loaders out there but Im not sure where they are made.
I will be ordering this for sure now. Looks quality and efficient
It works great for me
@@billingsfmx Thanks. I’ll get one for my Son as well
Made in Israel? Count me in!
Change that ECU asap. Put a full exhaust system When you do the ECU. Did mine and she rips. Love mine!!
I eventually plan to do ecu, exhaust, pipe, and airfilter. Im thinking ill go with the GET. Im actually ok with how the bike runs now. I modified the throttle tube to make it like a throttle tamer and it definitely helped the choppy on off feeling in the low rpms. I know Ill love the bike even more with the power mods!!!
Nice looks great. What kind of barkbusters do you have
Cycra probends. I talk about them a little more on one of my other videos.
I have the Ec9s for my edc. I have added a hogue grip sleeve, 2 magguts kits for 2 magazines making them 8+1, an Aegis precision trigger and glow on sight paint on the sights so I can shoot in the dark if needed. After seeing the front sight fall off of my wife's Smith EZ 380 with no hard carry issues I now have great appreciation for sights that can't fall off, get loose, batteries die, or get knocked out of line. I carry it in an urban carry lock leather owb holster that conceals comfortably and securely in a very minimalistic package. I use underwood extreme defender +p ammunition. I have also held both of these firearms and the max 9 didn't feel quite as good as the Ec9s.
Yes the ec9s is a good one at a great price! Im sure the plus P would hurt! Gotta love Ruger!
I love mine!!
Yeah its great! Its fun for a party float! Its perfect to fish off of as well!
@@billingsfmx that's why I bought it. So I can stand on my cooler and bowfish.
Itll work perfect for that just dont miss lol
Good job..........
Ive yet to really test it but first impressions wise it seems great!!!
Are you tired of the stock 2x4 of a seat Honda gave you!? look no further than the Seat Concepts Comfort XL! Your ass with thank you!
I have both the LC9S w/safety and the Max 9 pro w/o. Both triggers are very light for their purpose of use(subjectively). There is no margin for error with those triggers. I actually feel a little more comfortable with the LC9S with the safety on for carry. For what I do professionally the couple less rounds is a little less weight and slightly better streamlining of the LC9S is my preferred carry, when concealing all day and meeting with clients. The little less weight the slightly more streamlined but still able to carry a nine works. Will still make use of the Max just not during business hours
Totally understandable, some people definitely like the extra security of a safety. With a good holster protecting the trigger I like my carry pieces one in the chamber no safety. I ended up putting a red dot on the max 9 as well. Sure it is a little more weight and now a little taller with the red dot but it definitely helps someone who cant practice all the time shoot better. Both great ones from ruger!
@@billingsfmx Nice! Which one did you go with? Since the Max nine isn't my primary all day ccw I might throw one on there. I really like when they co witness as well.
Yeah the taller sights let it co witness on the max 9. I put a Riton optics TACTIX MPRD 2. Its aluminum and glass construction with shake awake, auto brightness, and auto off. Also has a lifetime warranty. I havent had any issues with it yet. Seems to pack a punch for the price.
It is a pistol, LOP ( length of pull) should not exceed 13.5 inches.
My length of pull is below that. Over all length with muzzle device removed back to the buffer tube is less than 26inches. Super fun one to shoot! I definitely want a 9mm pcc next!!!
Nice!
Im really digging this bike so far!!!
I am considering the same upgrade from the klx300. Also, I am considering the Kove Rally, but leaning towards the 450rl because it is just so proven.
Its a more serious/expensive bike but you get what you pay for. The klx is the best dual sport for the money and it will do just about everything. Low rpms to mid range and exploring around its great. I just wanted more power and suspension. Full throttling the klx everywhere was super fun but I was constantly hitting the limits of power and suspension on that bike. I'm loving the 450 so far. Having realistic expectations of it being a race bike, the increased maintenance and power delivery is fine by me. I have no stalling issues at all after turning up the idle. Im at 300 miles now and hear it will smooth out even more with around 1000 miles. Im happy with the power on trails now but its nice to know I have plenty of power to gain with an ecu, air filter, exhaust when my warranty is up. Throwing money at the klx didnt make any noticeable power. I have no regrets at all I think it really just boils down to what you want out of the bike and the terrain you ride.
The Kove Rally looks sweet! I dont know much about it at all! Im youtubing it as we speak! 450rl aint perfect but with a few mods its a Unicorn bike in my eyes. I just got a seat concepts comfort xl and Molecule skid Ill be reviewing in the next few weeks!
Nice! Hope you enjoy it, super fun bike. I have a '19 L and absolutely love it. I live in the desert next to the Cascades and the type of riding here is fantastic for this bike. Have fun!
Yeah Im really loving it so far! Such an upgrade over my KLX300! Im really hoping for winter to pass soon so I can take her out some more! Have you done anything to your bike? I think a seat or skidplate is next.
@@billingsfmxI've done a lot of mods over time. ECU, Yoshi, Seat, Rekluse CX clutch, Adventure Spec tower w/ QC and 12v, Nomad 20L tank, etc. And a bunch of little stuff. Take your time, add what improves comfort and confidence.
If you do end up replacing the stock ecu, I can tell you that I lost quite a bit of gas mileage with the AIM ECU. However, for me it's worth it. I do ride some tight single track, so I got the AIM with the toggle switch and two different maps, the single track map and the wide open race map. The single track map makes it more manageable in the tight stuff and the wide open map is what I use when on the street.
I wonder how the gas mileage is with the vortex and the GET ecu. I also see the aim has a gas mileage mode. With an already small tank it may help. A 3 button selector would be perfect! Im getting around 50mpg now at 4500 ft elevation. I already feel the engine getting smoother with some miles on her. Ill see how she feels around 1000.
Congratulations! I think your first mod should probably be a new seat. That stock seat, for dual sport riding, is a real pain in the ass!
Wrote that before getting to the end and seeing the mods you've already done. Wow, 99 miles already and you haven't changed the seat. I got the Seat Concepts Comfort Low. I do use my bike to commute from time to time, 50 miles one way. The seat was a necessity in my case.
Yes a seat is definitely on the todo list! Im looking at the comfort seat as well with red sides and gripper top. Im also looking at the Molecule skidplate.
Hi there, wondering if this could be installed 'upside down' to then also act as a travel limiter for the dropper so the bag doesn't hit the rear tyre? Struggling to visualise whether the angles would work...
No that wouldnt work the leverage from the bag would break the mount that way. Also if you ran just the mount it may work but the metal might harm the rubber seal of the dropper post. Wolftooth makes a product that may work for you. Ive since then gone with a rear rack set up vs the seat bag.
www.wolftoothcomponents.com/products/valais-25?variant=20299520965¤cy=USD&glCountry=US&gclid=CjwKCAiA7t6sBhAiEiwAsaieYsg7edCUE1vaMNcEqpS-wkHWrmw-cSAZnYm28PPPL7oDwzHZLwIO6hoCcG0QAvD_BwE
I actually ruined the bottom of my seat bag from it rubbing on the tire when dropper the seat too low.
I've pulled the trigger on an Aeroe rack and cradle system as they're on sale ATM - thanks for the reply 👍
Nice! That will be a great setup!
What red dot is that?

@@djnuge yes this is the red dot I have on my max 9. I still love it. Original battery still going strong from November of 2022.
The link you put includes the mounts?@@billingsfmx
Looks great! The RL looks a lot better than my L color scheme I had. I also just turned my idle up higher, and went with a 14t sprocket. I never had throttle or stalling issues, before I added the flywheel weight. With the idle up and geared higher, it was smooth trail riding second gear cuz it didnt come off/on decel so hard. I commented on a different vid bout the KLX 300, seeing where u ride now yeah the RL is definitly the better dual sport for that area. I just came back from AZ, was riding 80 degrees and 4-5k ft and could feel the power loss. Sea level, 40-60 degrees KLX has a lot more zip. Like i said If i still lived in desert or Southwest Id still have the 450L
Yeah I think the all red looks better too. Im at about 4500 ft where Im at the hp calculator says I could be losing 5hp from sea level.
I had a 450L when they first came out, was great in the desert terrain. However I moved back to Great Lakes in the woods and really disliked it there. Now Im on a KLX300 and love it for everything I do here. Showa always felt great to me, even after having KYB SSS on a YZ250FX. But honestly I really like the KLX suspension even with me at 210lbs. The factory settings worked well for only slow single track. I normally run 1 click stiffer all around for normal riding, and 2 clicks stiffer for road/faster open terrain.
Yeah the 450 is a handful in tighter terrain thats for sure. I also really loved my klx 300 and agree the suspension was very good for the price! I just wanted more power and better suspension for the riding I do. I really hope Kawasaki Suzuki or Yamaha makes something to compete with the 450rl!
Love mine its a perfect blend of street, dirt ,performance, I did upgrade ECU enjoy.
Yes thats how I feel so far! I definitely see ecu and other upgrades in the future. Which one did you go with?
Perfect setup. Im just south of you and riding a CRF300 and loving it. Its been perfect for the roads/trails in our area
Yes theres so many cool places to explore!!! I was on a KLX 300 before I got this bike. Dual sports just make so much sense in this part of the world!
Nice bike. I have a 2021 CRf450RL and I really like it. Looks like you got some nice terrain out there.
Thank you Im really loving it so far! Do you have any mods done to your Rl? I go with a dual sport because theres so many good places to ride around here.
@@billingsfmx Yes, a few: *Vortex ECU *FMF Megabomb and Q4 *Evap canister and smog plumbing deleted *Knobby tires *52-tooth rear sprocket *DID 520 ERVT chain *Fork and shock springs suited for my weight *Clutch judder spring removed and 3 stock pressure plate springs replaced with slightly stiffer CRF450R springs *Folding mirror * 2021 CRF450R throttle cables - The reason is these cables are much shorter and therefor have a much shorter route to the throttle body. This means the throttle cable slack can be set at the minimum which is less than can be set with the stock cables and routing. The point is more precise throttle control.
@YZEtc damn thats a nice list! Im happy with the initial and midrange power (all I really need on the trail) but on the road i really feel the top end lacking. Definitely feels choked up. How much does the vortex, exhaust, airfilter help with the top end?
@@billingsfmx It helps noticeably and the bike has plenty of torque and power. Sounds much better, too. I use Vortex ECU map no. 7 (Enduro map) which is said to be a smoother and lower power map and it's plenty for me. The Vortex ECU gives normal, smooth throttle response without the sudden ON/OFF response and the FMF weights less, sounds much better (but not loud), and the cat in the stock muffler is no longer there radiating baking heat.
Nice bike!
Thank you Ive really enjoyed it so far
Nice rig man👌 Hope you enjoy it!
Thank you Im having lots of fun while the weather cooperates!
I like the solid mounted handguards
Yes I like the cycras I just hope they cable rub doesnt become an issue.
What did you pay??? And out the door price???? I'm in the market
Out the door depends on your shop and tax rate where you live. I got it for msrp 9999 plus doc fee and temp tag for 160. Then tax on top of that.
This was for a 2023 model as well
Although I prefer my Springfield Hellcat, Ruger did a great job. My cousin has a Ruger Max 9 & I go to the range with him often and the gun shoots great. I'm not a fan of the trigger. but it's not bad, especially for the price.
Yeah I really like it for the price. Never tried a hell cat but I had a couple xdms and they were awesome!
Where did you find that Norma ammo at?
Im pretty sure stright from their website. Great stuff!
For bikepacking on a mix of pavement and dirt, do you think the Ogre would've been a better fit?
If you are doing more road touring, easy dirt trails, or fire roads the geometry and tire width on the ogre would work well. I got the krampus for a bikepacking do it all trail bike. The 3 inch tires are so fun but they are big and heavy.
How big is this bike ??
Its pretty small I am 6.2
