    I got a great deal on a Karate Monkey and went with that instead of the Krampus. I run 29 x 2.6 and believe I can get 3.0’s with the horizontal dropouts. Then it would almost be a Krampus.

      Yeah the KM is great bike! My buddy build a custom one and loves it. Id be suprized if a 29x3 cot the back. I wonder how it would ride with 2.6 put back and 3.0 up front?

  • @SnootchieBootchies27

    Get a rack and trunk bag instead of the seat bag. Then you can have a dropper post and no waggle. That's what I did with my Karate monkey

    • @billingsfmx
      @billingsfmx  Před 2 lety

      Yes thats a good option, besides adding a bit more weight. My Dad runs that set up on his Timberjack. I havent found any minamalist rear racks I like. Ive been pretty happy with the seat bag, I dont notice much side to side movement while actually riding. Bike weighs about 70 lbs loaded up as it is. Id love to see a video of your karatemonkey set up. Its cool seeing other options!

    • @billingsfmx
      @billingsfmx  Před 2 lety

      Also did you see my Topeak Dropper post mount? That allows me to run the seat bag with the dropper. Still can only get about half the drop before the bag hits the big 29+ tire. Thats possibly where the rear rack and bag might be a better setup?

  • @watertankhikes
    @watertankhikes Před rokem +1

    I'm building a Krampus from a frameset, and routed the rear derailleur cable on the right side of the headtube, which puts a tight bend in the cable. I see that your cable comes in from the left side of the headtube and crosses over underneath the top tube. Is that the way the cable routing came from Surly? Thanks.

    • @billingsfmx
      @billingsfmx  Před rokem +1

      The cable routing in the video is the correct. You never want a tight bend in the cables/lines. You should route the rear derailleur cable on the left side of the head tube. Route them to have a gradual bend, good handlebar movement without making them too short or too long. The Krampus is a beast! Such a fun bike! What tires are you going with?

      @@billingsfmx Thanks for the reply. I already have 2 Jones LWB 29+ bikes, so this Krampus is going to have a suspension fork, and will be for terrain that's too rough for the full rigid bikes. Rekon/Ikon 2.6 front, 2.35 rear.

    • @billingsfmx
      @billingsfmx  Před 3 lety

      Yeah for sure! Youre going to love it! It was 33.2 lbs with pedals. I set it up tubeless and that cut 1.15lbs off the bike. So set up tubeless with pedals shes a little over 32lbs. After the rack and all my bikepacking gear I dont even want to know how much she weighs! Although it did handle the weight and ride awesome loaded up! I love me some carbon full suspension but a full ridged steelie with phat wagon wheels rides like a dream!

    Very nice! If I ride mostly groomed single and double track for no more than 3 hrs would this be a fun rig for that adventure or would you favor the Karate Monkey? The krampus just looks so good this year.

    • @billingsfmx
      @billingsfmx  Před 3 lety

      Hi thank you! The krampus and karate monkey are fairly similar bikes that can go full riged or front suspension wih dropper seat post. Biggest difference is the slight geometry changes and tire size. Both would be great options for riding groomed trails.
      The Krampus is a little more stable and rolls over everything with tons of traction, and once up to speed she keeps momentum. Theres a reason all downhill racers are going 29.
      The karate monkey should ride slightly more lively and jumpable, little lighter, longer reach, shorter chainstays and will get up to speed a little faster.
      Although Ive never rode a karate Monkey I have rode a Salsa Timberjack with 27.5x2.8 and 27.5x3 tires and really enjoyed the ride.
      After looking at the subtle nuances it boils down to rider preference and riding style, Im taller at 6.2 and my full suspension bike is a 29er. 29 is plenty playful for my riding style. 29x3 tires add even more traction, rollover, and cushion. Hard to pick a bike with out knowing more about your riding style. Cant go wrong with either bike, but wow do I love this Krampus!!!

    Nice, but I went for the Kona Unit X after all. They tweeked the geo last year to make it more modern and practical (e.g. longer headtube...). This generation of krumpy felt a bit dated after that tbh. Plus, I never cared for this particular horizontal dropouts design much.

    • @billingsfmx
      @billingsfmx  Před 3 lety

      Nice the Unit X is a cool bike! I ended up with the krampus because I really wanted to run 29x3. Ive been very happy with the geo on this bike. Roll over of the 29+ is amazing ive yet to wish for a slacker or longer frame. Its a full ridged steel bike so I only expect so much out of it. I added a 150 dropper post and that made for a more playful ride. Fully loaded up for bike packing the geo handles lots of weight and tight switchbacks. When I want to get super gnarleyand go fast I bust out the Hightower.
