Rod Building Featuring Marco Cecala Part 2: Wrapping A Stripping Guide
Marco Cecala is back for Video #2 where he will be wrapping a stripping guide on a fly rod blank. This is a decorative stripping guide wrap and the techniques he shows in this video could be applied to any type of guide on any type of rod. Wrapping snake guides is the basically the same as you would wrap any guide, so this will be helpful even for those who do not build fly rods. Decorative guide wrapping videos are really useful tools for those of us who are visual learners!
I hope you enjoy the video and a special thanks to Marco for sending these videos for me to upload to the channel. I think many people will find them super helpful!

    Nice video! Bought some mason line, tested a section of it in the sink - and it did not float🤔 It’a three stranded twisted line… Any ideas?

    • @TheFishingHobby
      @TheFishingHobby Před 5 dny

      You may have gotten nylon (which is more common to find) and not polypropylene. Nylon is more dense than water so it sinks. Polypropylene is less dense than water so it floats. There are different polypropylene formulations that are more dense than others but all are less dense than water. Polypropylene will float for quite some time before it becomes waterlogged. Once it gets waterlogged, you need to do a false cast to get the water out of it so it will float again. If the packaging says polypropylene and it doesn’t float at all, you more than likely got a mislabeled product (it is pretty common for items made in China to be mislabeled).

    I found one of my dad only rod and reel. Rod is fiberglass and the female section is metal , male is fiberglass and was a little loose. I found a cheap and easy way to tighten it , I use a small bit of cling film on the tip of the male part and it was good! But you have to replace the film every time you take the rod apart, but a roll of film is cheap and you can use it a thousand times 🤷🏻‍♂️

    I built a chrome Mitchell 498 from parts. It took me almost three months to find all the parts and get everything to fit perfectly. The chrome work was done by a custom motorcycle shop. I had some help from a few other Mitchell reel enthusiasts who helped find the most difficult parts. If anyone asked me was my reel a work of art I would absolutely say yes as there was a lot of creativity in the side plate and other places. I will never fish with it’s it is definitely one-of-a-kind. I’ll bet you feel somewhat the same way about your Shakespeare. - Chris

    Both look like good tools. The cuticle cutter is like an edge beveler in leather work except a lot cheaper. But it can be sharpened. Use heavy cord or small leather lacing cord, saturate with compound used on leather strops, secure the tool and slid cord from back of cutter to front. Just like stropping a blade or chisel. Should give nice sharp edge. Quick tip, if your burnishing tool has a nick or bur, burnish the edge on a piece of leather. A belt, side of a shoe or a strop, anything with smooth leather. That will slick it up like glass.

    Love the old Penn 420SS. Metal body, brass / ss worm drive, single bearing, skirted spool, quiet (but not instant) anti-reverse, a large, single Teflon drag washer that can be replaced with a more modern material such as HT-100. The older Penn 716 has a very similar drive train, a cup-type rotor, a clicking AR system, and a very similar drag system. I like these too. The 420SS and 716 / 716z reels are in some demand though, so costs are quite a bit higher than for a Mitchell 308 or a Shakespeare 2052. Penn 714 and 430SS are the next size up. The 4300SS, a later version of the 430SS, retains the worm drive but has a graphite body and a different drag system. Note that while the 4300SS has a worm gear drive, the 4200SS does *not*! The main gear is garbage-metal, the pinion brass, and you should not reel under pressure if you want to prolong the service life of the gears. I've caught a *lot* of fish using the 4200SS in salt water in spite of these shortcomings. Biggest was a 20lb+ bat ray that took me 45 minutes to land and left me with an aching wrist for a week. Just putting that out there so people understand there's more to reel design than just gears and body material.

      It has a bail that can be closed manually so I didn’t see any reason to talk about it. If a reel has a bail that can be closed by hand, I’m doing it by hand every time! Saves so many headaches from line knots/slack line on the spool. The automatic bail closing works just fine, it just isn’t something that I would use personally so I didn’t even mention it.

    I too use the double edge razors over the single edge. I find the double edge razor blades to be superior over the single edge. They are considerably sharper. I cut the double edge razors in two with heavy duty scissors. I’ll take masking tape and double wrap the back edge where I made the cut. The tape makes the cut blades easy and safer to pick up and use.

    This is brilliantly simple. I don't make rods (stumbled on this looking at fly tying vid's) but I think it might solve a design issue I've had stuck in my head for years, for something to hold a spinning round rod length. I'd just need to scale it up so to be heavy duty, using speargun rubber. Thanks!!!! -You might have thought of and tried it, but having a mod'd design that can be screwed down to plywood or a desk/table top might be a good option for those that can't get/don't want pipe. -FYI: don't worry about patents. This is your design (since you changed the one you were inspired by from 3 bands to 4) and you've got precedence just by virtue of posting public videos. No one but big corp's with deep pockets can take action on patents anyway. People always love to shout "you should patent that" on YT, not considering YT is public domain and patents cost huge money to write up, register and defending them can bankrupt most people. Best thing you can do is make the stuff yourself, invest in getting the product in front of people and let word of mouth do the rest. Sell as much as you can, as soon as you can, because someone in China is going to see it, calculate if there's a profit to be made, buy one from you and reverse engineer it. Then knock it off for pennies on the dollar. They'll mass produce it and kill your business in the process. There's fart-all you can do about it. I know b/c I've had that happen with one of my designs.

    I gave this technique a try. It seems to work fine. You're correct about not using it to cover long wraps. I tried doing it on a thread wrapped metal ferrule on a two part rod. It turned out uneven on the long wrap. My next rod using this will be even better now that I learned how to gauge the setup time for the glue. I didn't use steam to set it as it was a very humid day when I tried it, so I let the humidity set it. I also used a rod turner while waiting for the glue to set.
