2023 NMA Rimrock Grand Prix: Hosted by the Dust Dodgers (Vet B Full Race) Raced on a 2022TM En300fi
The 2023 Rimrock Grand Prix was a great race, with a lot of open space and rocks. This is the full Vet B race, raced on my 2022 TM Racing En300fi with TBI fuel injection. The bike ran amazing and felt good. The Gopro didn't capture any audio, so I added some music instead. I ended up taking 5th in Vet B, not super happy with the results, but I will work on improving for next year.

    I know that TM is not well known outside Italy. That doesn't surprise me. TM as a small business have a very unconventional attitude to everything they do (marketing, business, technology, the materials they use, how they build components, etc ...). They don't follow the pack (e.g. KTM, Beta, etc ....). They don't care about following the pack. They make a certain number of bikes per year. They sell all of them. That's it. They don't compromise their ways just because they want to be well known like KTM or because they need to achieve target sales, etc... Anyway, for us having a TM is something special. Having ... eg. a KTM is stuff from a "chain restaurant", having a TM is stuff from a "local family run restaurant".

      @DTR DOWN TO RIDE I have the 2023 en 300 fi 2t pink edition on order. Expecting to pick it up at the end of this month. I rebuilt my 01 ktm 300 2 times in 2 years, and had a bearing in the case let go late last season. (2nd top end was caused by the carb slipping out of the boot intake boot 4th pinned)

      @Nate11 nice choice 👌 those limited editions are very cool bikes. Hopefully, they went with the higher quality roller bearings on the limited edition bikes. I'll probably do a video on the motor rebuild, since their really isn't much for videos on TMs. I'm not a professional mechanic though. Just a guy that knows enough to get by 😆

      @DTR DOWN TO RIDE I spoke with the dealership I am getting the bike from. They let me know that they reached out to TM and from what I was advised they can tell from the VIN # which bearing is in it. I was also told they have stopped using the sealed bearings.

      @Nate11 I was talking to someone with a 23 and it sounds like his main bearing were open ball bearings as well. I hope the main bearing issues are a thing of the past now 🤞

    Know it's disappointing having faith in your equipment to take a beating and be there at the end. Then a failure in a part such as a crank bearing. KEEP ON TRUCKING!

      Yes it is, Parts are on their way, though! I ended up building a KDX220R in just over a week to use for the next race. It was a blast to ride but didn't have the power or suspension of the TM. Hopefully, this will be the last of the major issues with the TM. Otherwise, I'll just keep racing the KDX220R 😅 working on the next video 👍

      @DTR DOWN TO RIDE are the bearings going to be the same sealed bearings or like the ones in the MX bike?

    • @dtr_downtoride
      @dtr_downtoride Před rokem

      @Henry Hawk great question! I asked Get Dirty Dirt Bikes to send me the MX roller bearings. They are about twice the cost, but I will get a credit back if and when TM accepts my warranty claim. I didn't want to wait for the warranty to be accepted and parts shipped from Italy, so I had Dave ship me the parts in advance. Roller bearings are $40-50 each vs about $20 each.

    Hi nice video, can you please explain in detail what is that switch on the righ for resetting the power valve? Thanks.

    • @dtr_downtoride
      @dtr_downtoride Před rokem

      Hello, I also have a video on how to install the "Arming Switch". The TMs have an electronic power valve, if you stall the bike, quickly restart it, and start to ride, it can sometimes confuse the computer, so the power valve setting will be incorrect for the gear/speed. You can tell when this happens as the bike will act like its "rich", less low end power. If you rev the bike to 8k rpm, the computer will automatically reset the power valve. for most riding the switch is not needed. But, when riding steep technical trails, having the switch is useful, as you need all the low end power you can get, and reving the engine is not practical when trying to keep the bike from falling of a ledge. The "arming Switch" allows the computer to say powered on even when the bike is stalled, so it always knows what gear it is in. This means the power valve is always set correctly. please let me know if this answers your question. It is not required, it is only for convenience.

      Me too! the bike was just at 1 yr when this happened. hopefully they stop using sealed main bearings on the en (Fi) models... also sounds like the bearing itself partially blocks the oil port for the LH main bearing. seems like a pretty simple design change.

      @dtr_downtoride Před rokem

      @Shopper531 yup, got the engine back together just in time for last weekend's race. Filmed the entire rebuild, but not sure whether to post, because it would be extremely long, suppose I can break it up into sections or steps. The bikes mapping was still rich, but Collin from Powerchicken Offroad was able help me with the maps 1 hr before the race started. The bike ran great both Saturday and Sunday. Gopro turned off for Saturday's race. It filmed the entire race on Sunday, but didn't get any audio... I just finished editing the prior race video today, it should be up tomorrow. The motor rebuild and most recent race will be started soon.

    That is so disappointing. It's really difficult to have any confidence in TM with freaking crank bearing failures happening on EN models. This is like the BETA fiasco some years ago. I got the MX model so hopefully that saved me some trouble. I'm at about 28 hours with 4 races on it so far. I will absolutely be tearing down the engine to inspect and replace crank bearings when my racing season is over.

      They are pretty sweet bikes, the 21 and 22 seem to be having numerous main bearing failures. Which seems to probably be related to them using a seal bearing and possibly because the main bearings are partially blocking the oil ports.

    What sag do you have in your bike?

    • @dtr_downtoride
      @dtr_downtoride Před rokem

      Good question, I had my suspension done by EVO and they recommend 100 to 105mm, while TM's manual says 90-105. after this race I realized my sag was incorrect. It was at 114mm with all my gear on, I had set it without my Backpack and waist band on. Will be putting it to between 100-105 again.

    A two stroke does not need to be warmed up during the day because of the cold. It should be started, warmed up slightly then riden easy, then hard. Watch Jeff Slavens on starting a two stroke. I dont think this was a bike issue.

    • @dtr_downtoride
      @dtr_downtoride Před rokem

      Can't start a race by riding the bike easy, so the bike has to be warmed up prior to the race start/line up. This race was delayed multiple times, so the bike would cool down too much due to how cold it was. Unfortunately, you can't just get on the bike and ride around when on the starting line. Trail riding I haven't had this issue, but others have definitely reported their TMs frequently fouling plugs. I've purchased a cable and software to monitor and change fueling as needed.

      @dtr_downtoride Před rokem

      My bike has 49 hours and this was the first time I've had it actually foul a plug. I do normally change the plug every 2nd oil change though. Someone did make a good point that TMs are race bikes and need to be ridden as such. I'm going to ride a gear low next race and see if that will help. This race was cold and delayed, so the bike idled a lot more than what was shown in this video.
