In today's video, I'm doing a deep dive into the safety and sustainability of the popular GROW BAGS! Popular for container gardening, grow bags are being increasingly sold to home gardeners limited on garden space. Typically made with recycled plastic water bottles, these sound good in theory but is the truth so rosy? There are a couple of issues with the popular grow bags made from plastic fib...

Freshening up our container soil!

Finally past last frost and time to reinvigorate the potting soil in the containers! It’s totally fine to reuse the same soil every year but I’ll give it a boost before planting (you could also do this even if you’ve already planted)-our in ground soil has the benefit of being able to utilize the soil life more effectively than containers, as containers are subject to some rough conditions over...
Spring farm tasks and digging/dividing dahlias in SPRING instead of fall
zhlédnutí 13KPřed měsícem
Well, it's been a heck of a week, folks. I'm still reeling a bit but wanted to share our dahlia process. When I started overwintering our dahlias in the ground and dividing in spring, folks thought I was nuts. Most farmers dig up the tubers in the fall and divide, storing all winter. And while we've done that before, we have losses in storage and it's a lot of work. I LOVE doing this instead so...

It looks so whimsical! It's totally fine if it rots, impermanence isn't a bad thing. I do have one concern, how is it in the rain? I had wooden stairs that would get super slippery, but this was in the PNW around Seattle. I've been on wooden bridges that weren't slippery at all when wet. I'm not really sure what's responsible for the difference!

My greenhouse needs rebuilding every 3 years. The frame is made of Hazel - look up "Hazel bender" to see the general idea. I've used the same piece of polytunnel plastic for 6+ years so far and have just rebuilt the frame again. It costs me a little bit of time harvesting the Hazel and doing the work, and a little bit of string. At the end I get a small amount of seasoned firewood from it which I use to cook some meals. I could build a more permanent structure, but I'd need to put more money in and design it carefully. Maybe some day I will - I have a design in mind. Originally I wanted a glass greenhouse, but when I was standing there looking at the area one day I got blown off my feet by a gust of wind and so decided glass probably wasnt the best idea after all.

I love that. Unfortunately, my location has a nasty species of termite endemic to the area, and my house is wood-framed, so it wouldn’t be a good fit here. But I do love it.

You know what makes a civilized human? That he can make something that will outlast him and serve his offspring. Japan stuff applies to that. This? This is garbage. If it would last 10-15 years at least it could be considered as "ok", but still trash.

Everything depends on your goal. If progress is your goal building things quickly, cheaply and building them to last is what you want, not for them to break down. If you feel youve done enough to justify what you take from society though, and your thing is rebuilding a path every few years, then you do you.

It's pretty, but I'd never do it in my own garden/yard, because I never wear any foot covering when I'm outside on my property. That path would be too annoying under foot.

I have no idea about farming/gardening! Been off sick for almost 3 months and had such low mood! My Mum used to garden a lot, she grew all her own veg & fruits. So I decided to get out in our massive garden that was just waste land, coz I never thought I had time for planting & gardening. Your videos are so well explained and easy to understand & make so much sense. I’m so enjoying planting and even have a few veg growing. You are inspiring me to improve the health of my garden soil naturally (clay in UK & rains a lot) and become more productive. Thank you for all your hard work.
