Spring farm tasks and digging/dividing dahlias in SPRING instead of fall

- Well, it's been a heck of a week, folks. I'm still reeling a bit but wanted to share our dahlia process. When I started overwintering our dahlias in the ground and dividing in spring, folks thought I was nuts. Most farmers dig up the tubers in the fall and divide, storing all winter. And while we've done that before, we have losses in storage and it's a lot of work. I LOVE doing this instead--so much less work, just dig up in spring, divide, and replant. The key is winterizing thorougly--put a lot of mulch on top (a LOT) and tarp to keep moisture out.

My sister passed away in 2003, it still hurts and I still miss her so much! I can understand you so much and your loss and your feelings!!! Thank you for this. I just found out this afternoon that my best friend passed. There will be a lot to go through in the coming days. But like you, I choose to keep moving forward and process the grief in my working day. I think for me , this is the best way to work through the loss. How odd for me that you would share this today. Gardening for me has been tremendously healing…when I was little I would garden with my grandmother, I have very fond memories with her from a young age. Well, last year she passed away. It was the hardest thing to experience…watching her take her last breath. Well after we got back home from her funeral, that Saturday morning I got up and my heart said start her garden. I was in the dirt from sunrise to sunset that day…I cried, I laughed, I grieved. But it was much much needed. We bought her a crape Myrtle Tree that bloomed the prettiest lilac color ever…that was her favorite. We kept telling her “grandma you have to get better so you can come plant your tree” And she always responded with “I will get better.” Well needless to say she never made it to come plant her tree at my house. So planted it in her honor and creating a beautiful cottage garden around it was so therapeutic for me.
So keep on gardening! And keep making videos…even if they are just “follow along with me” videos…we will be watching!!! Love love love your channel!!!

Instead I just dug them up and some are squishy, some not. I am going to cure them for a bit and see if any are viable. Be kind to yourself. I find Anderson Cooper's podcast about grief very cathartic, btw.

Sorry about your losing your sister. Our brother-in-law died two weeks ago. We visited after he was hospitalized and this week will be flying to Austin, TX again for his memorial service. Garden tasks have to be postponed though I’m retired and consequences are not dire. I hope you have many happy memories which will console you when the pain is less acute.
