The Model Guy
Canada
Registrace 1. 03. 2008
I am an aviation enthusiast, historian and modeler. This channel is a very simple project of mine. Follow along as I not just build models, but use them to bring history to life.
"The Model Guy" is the name my four year old son came up with when I was deciding a channel name. This is not an attempt to be "the Guy" but a funny reference to my kids and how simple things are to them.
Enjoy the videos!

Hasegawa 1/48 Canadair Sabre Mk VI & modeling mental health
In my return video I build Hasegawa's Sabre and convert it to a Canadair Sabre. I've also been offline for nearly five months with speed builds, travel and running into a slump. The point of this build wasn't to produce anything mind bowing, but a simple, keep my hands and mind busy while planning the next project.
Enjoy and please leave your comments, a like and sub if you haven't already.

I'm back in action with a slammer build. That means you pick a relatively easy kit to build and don't get lost in the weeds. I spent eight nights on this build just to get the mojo going....and test out the new camera. There's a few cringe bits where things are a tad out of focus, but overall I feel the quality is a lot better than my phone.

We can't find this Airfix PRXIX model anymore anywhere.
Maybe they are going to re-release it?
David R Lentz, Columbus, Ohio, USA (Tuesday, 2 July, 2024) Truly excellent artistry here! You make me wish I was wealthy enough to hire you for dozens of projects!
Thank you David, I appreciate the compliment:)
Love your tip about sprue goo. I'm definitely giving that a try.
I might have to try to find a Hasegawa kittyhawk kit and see how it compares to the AMtech kit. I am currently building a "roundtail" k5 kittyhawk from the kit. My only complaint so far is almost nonexistent panel lines. That kittyhawk turned out beautifully. I hope the customer is happy with both it and the hurricane. They are both beautiful models.
Thanks bud. His family really appreciated it.
Bro called the Elefant a tank 😭(it’s ok)
Brilliant build Robbie, really enjoyed this. Like you I do enjoy a Hasegawa kit. Looking forward to the Gannet build!
Thanks dude. The bucc will be up before the Gannet.
@TheModelGuy I just about finished the Gannet. It'll be th Bucc next for me. It'll not be anywhere near as good as yours, but I look forward to learning from your build.
Just had this pop up in my feed, even though it’s a vintage build. Oddly enough I too switched from spraying Vallejo to Tamiya/Gunze paints. I like the weathering and finish on this. And enjoyed the music in between your history narrative.
How did you paint the grey bottom in the wavy pattern? Wonderful music
It was masked with tape
Where did you get the square mask to create the chipping effect?
I got them from Uschi. They’re called “splatter templates”
Great review !! I , myself, have sworn Off airfix Kits For life ! Always a Major letdown !!!!!
I wish I could completely swear off them too…but they’re the only ones doing stuff I want to build. IE Gannet, Bucc and Sea King
Thanks for the tip to remove carrier film using gloss and rub down. Haven't seen that before. Will try on next build.
Wonderful job!
Like your videos' format! Any kin to Bob the Science Guy?
Thanks Allen! Unfortunately I’m not related to
David R Lentz, Columbus, Ohio, USA I can see from your video’s outset that you certainly have excellent technique. I would like to have seen from the beginning all your efforts, though. Anticipating your greater skill, expertise, and experience that all this indicates (which is why I visit your channel), I especially would appreciate hearing your account of your work as we viewers observe and learn.
Thanks David. I revisited this kit two years ago as a series with more detail. Definitely check that one out
@@TheModelGuy thanks!
Fabulous build and pleased to see a new video. Your Fusion designing contour impress, really like the cockpit items you showed. Slumps? Not really, but I do get build fatigue on long duration projects (self induced of course) and can’t wait to do a palette cleanser like this Sabre.
Thanks bud! I definitely recommend not cutting the wingtips off if you want a simple build :)
Nice to see the correct Canadian flag on the tail. 😉
Correct for that time period. But what a time.
OMG not another Spitfire.. please, no more Spitfires...
Canada Day is coming up on a Monday. Love the Canadair Sabre MK 6 nice work jet. Love jets.
Long weekend!
Such a nice build kit nice jet Canadair Sabre 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦😊☺️😀🤩❤🤓😎😇😍🤗👍 love jets.
That is a nice aircraft and a very nice build. At the moment I am sticking to straight forward builds. I find it easier to sit down and concentrate on more complex builds in the long winter evenings, when there is little else to do. I also recently threw out my television and that has given me more motivation to do some modelling.
The fall/winter is my busy month
Love your work as always. I'm just recently back from an almost 12 month slump. I've still got the same two kits on my bench from this time last year. I had burnt out completely and I just couldn't bring myself to work on them and I definitely didn't have the motivation to start another one. I just downed the tools and walked away until eventually the Spark came back. I think sometimes you just gotta leave it alone and not feel guilty about it. Helps if you have another hobby to keep you busy. For me I got back into playing guitar for a bit.
Are kids a hobby? I play guitar too and it makes for some lazy evenings at the fire pit
If you figure out a way to get motivated to sit down at the bench please let me in on the secret. Its something I struggle with constantly.
I’ll force myself when I have that mindset. Even if it’s only for 30 minutes to assemble ordinance. Eventually you’ll start getting back into it. I had to do that while struggling with some really bad PTSD. Had to force myself to go to the rink, go running etc. eventually I started to enjoy those things again. But that’s just me.
Interesting on your comparison. The F-86F had all of what the Canadian one had.
Except the engine
Such a lovely build.
It turned out very nice 👍
Slight correction on the number of Hornet squadrons. We have 4 operational, plus 1 operational training squadrons of Hornets. 401, 409 and 410 in Cool Pool and 425 and 433 in Bagtown.
Thanks for that. I was only counting the four active squadrons and not the training squadron.
Not sure if you have heard of the Australian Sabre version- the Avon Sabre. It did have cannon (2x 30mm Adan) and the Avon engine. It has been said that this was the fastest Sabre, and with the cannon armament, the most lethal.
Was it American built? On the records the Sabre Mk VI was the fastest with the Orenda engine.
@@TheModelGuy The Avon Sabre was built in Australia and had some major redesigns to accommodate the Avon engine and Adan cannon. Top speed was over 700 mph. It was a rival to the Canadian Version as the best Sabre.. You could argue it as a least better armed..
Good luck with your HMS Victory build!
That's an odd way to spell "Spitfire" :)
Nothing better looking than RCAF 1 Air Division Sabres.
The checker tails look like hot rods
I have been in those slumps and analysis paralysis. I always go for a quick win kit to rebuild my confidence. Academy’s USAFF-F-15E kit (12550) is basically a snap kit. But the ease it goes together and the quality of the fit is insane. Best kit ever for a quick win. Guys at the hobby store were blown away and bought that kit for themselves. Really built my confidence.
That's good to hear. I only ever hear that Revell was the way to go for -15s
Once again, your work is stunning. It looks great. I am on a three month hiatus myself. Burned myself out on the interior details of the Leopard 2 A6 I have on my bench. I thought the full interior complete with photo etched parts would be a wonderful project. It is, but I was overwhelmed. Haven't been able to get back to it.
Sometimes those are killers. Once you get into the weeds and see how long it's taking it's hard to stay motivated.
Great to see you back! Modeling and mental health has been a recent topic of discussion among automotive model content creators. While modeling helps us to zone out in a safe way from other life stressors, it can at times create its own problems. I’ve always been an aircraft guy, but more recently have been doing more automobiles. That said, my stash isn’t very large so picking a subject isn’t hard. But I did stall on a 67 GTO kit that just took too much work. Peace and love
The BPK C-40 had been kicking my ass for nearly three months. I didn't like not seeing progress after all the work going into it.
Beautiful Sabre. If I lose my desire to build, I’ll sometimes go for a drive and might see a really nice car and want to replicate it. Or sometimes see someone on yt that builds something really nice and want to build on also. Sometimes getting into a group build is a huge help, but it can also lead to more lose of interest. It’s a balance.
I came back with three must-do projects from the UK. And group builds usually end badly for me. I am even currently running one without a build in the game lol
@@TheModelGuy What is the group build you are running? From when to when, rules?
@@Johnny-tt8zc its on fb as “The Mighty 8th Group Build”. Any aircraft that flew for the 8th. Started May 1st with no end date set

Maybe it sounds weird, but to challenge loss of mojo I grab an Egg Plane 🥚 ✈️ The Sabre came out great, welcome back 💥👍💥
I found that a genre change can help too
great to see you back.the sabre is a great aircraft
It's a very sleek looking jet and lot's of options. Ten minutes into the build a new tool 1/48 F-86A was announced....lol
If I get stuck just pick a kit and build it. NO extras, who cares if it's accurate, just enjoy the build. Helps me
Also known as, the slammer build. :) Gets your brain thinking of what's next
Nice to see you back. Hope you enjoyed being here in Scotland. 😊 Funny you should use the word "cool"when referring to here..... 🥶 Keep up the great content and building.
I feel like I did three weeks worth of stuff in two weeks. East Fortune, Duxford, RAF Museum and Bovington. Edinburgh, Fort William, Black Pool...covered a lot of ground. Was a fantastic time and sad to have to leave.
First time watching. I'm just up the road from you in Calgary. I find, if I'm in a model slump, go to a museum or airshow, where and whenever possible. That usually gets me amped up to build again.
Is Springbank happening this year? The rumor mill is saying no. The Museum of the regiments is always a good visit
@@TheModelGuy yes, the museum of the regiments is fantastic. I think Springbank only happens every two years. Lethbridge might be this year. Abbotsford might be this year. Couldn’t hurt to check out the US for airshows.
Hey Robbie, good to see you back on YT.when in doubt I go back to figures ,but I find that aftermarket is a hassle as we don't have a proper local supplier so it either comes from Oz in about 6 weeks or 24/48 hrs at the cost of a kidney or go with out. thats what happens I guess when you live at the arse end of the world
I get quite a bit of stuff from Aus with it being one of the few counties the Canadian dollar is stronger in. That's where my Sea King came from
Nice to see you back. As for me right now living out on a farm in a RV just sucks so of my building mojo out of me. No airbrush nor my scratch building material due to space it is kind of hard. We that is me and the misses moved out here to her parents farm to help them. They are at that age were they need help,so this is the way it is for now. They come 1st.
I don't model, so I can't offer you any advice, but sometimes I don't feel like working out so I remind myself how good I feel when I am finished and how guilty I feel if I jam out. Side note what regiment are you with, I used to be with the Calgary Highlanders. I look forward to more videos especially if it a TA 152 or FW 190D. Have a great day
Thats most likely whats happening here too. Fake it until you make it again
Don't feel bad, there's kits that I've been working on for years, only because I don't get much time when I'm home from work.
Luckily with my job change it frees up an extra hour a day
As modern modelers, we're drowning in a sea of choices in kits and aftermarket parts. It leads to creative paralysis.
That’s a great point and something I get sucked into
Canadair Sabers were beasts, the USAF needed the cannon armed ones in Korea.
They seemed to do okay with the six fifties.
Ooo mk6! Nicely done!
Thanks bud! I should get the pics up in your Cold War group build page.
Well you were missed 😊. Good to see you back.
Thanks dude
Hi I am from Calgary and it’s nice to find a Canadian builder.
Do you hit up any of the shows after the summer?
