    Its trash but its exactly what I need! Im doing a challenge to make a "machine shop" using nothing but natural materials I can find in the wild or trash I can find on the ground, and that goes for the tools to make the tools as well. So far I have some surface plates made from big rocks I found and a crude forge made from clay to smelt aluminum and copper. No way I can make accurate gears yet for a true dial indicator but now I can move one step closer to my goal when I make this from aluminum.

    The one scenario you DO need leadscrew stabilizers at the top is if you're running a dual-z setup with a synchronous belt to keep the two sides in step (pun intended) with each other. Without them, you can't keep the belt in tension. I feel it would only be fair to make an addendum acknowledging that scenario.

    • @makerunderground
      @makerunderground Před 3 měsíci

      The beginning of the video specified that we are talking about entry level printers. I already specifically acknowledge that modded printers and higher end printers have different needs. Thanks for the feedback but I completely disagree that an addendum is required.

    what mini lathe would you recommend?

    • @makerunderground
      @makerunderground Před 5 měsíci

      Honestly, if you're willing to go through it and make sure everything is put together properly, I would buy the standard 7x14 import. I bought my proxxon because I wanted something that worked well out of the box. It's been a good little lathe but over the years I've come up against capacity and rigidity issues with it often. I often wonder if I would have felt like I had a lot more flexibility, if I bought a bigger, cheaper built lathe.

    • @makerunderground

      The pin in the handle is a mosaic pin. They can be made or they can be purchased in any number of designs. I bought both the mosaic pin and the stabilized burl on Etsy. Both typically used in knife handles. The pin for the head I just turned down from solid brass to a snug fit and hammered it to form it in the hole for hopefully a permanent connection.

    and, indeed, maybe a compliant mechanism, driven by a differential screw, that 'gears down' the travel of the screws, to drive the 'jack'

  • @lohikarhu734
    @lohikarhu734 Před 11 měsíci

    each of the differential screws needs to have linearity near the level of the desired pseudo-pitch...not so easy, but might improve with some kind of mechanical averaging over a longer thread, with a bit of compliance in the threaded body, to allow a bit of squish..

      Yes, I replaced the compound slide with a 12L14 steel riser block. Made a huge difference in rigidity. I only put the compound on if I need it. I actually made it on the lathe before I had a drill press or a mill but the acentric drilling was a huge pain in my little four jaw. That makes sense! Get rid of the fragile corners and spread the load across a longer cutting edge. • @makerunderground
      @makerunderground Před rokem

      If you're talking about the leveling plate, there are embedded grade 8 nuts in the printed parts. I made that before I had a lathe or mill at home, but I'd do just about anything to avoid printed threads.
