"Savoyager's Stomp" - Early Jazz Trombone Doctoral Lecture Recital
zhlédnutí 48Před 14 dny
Our performance of Carroll Dickerson's "Savoyager's Stomp," from Part 2 of my doctoral lecture recital on early jazz trombone. The tune is essentially a slower and more orchestrated contrafact of Kid Ory's "Muskrat Ramble." I'm playing Fred Robinson's solo here from the original 1928 recording. Note the 2-octave trombone plops after the solo section, which is a "Muskrat Ramble" tradition🎶 Brigh...

My solo on “Whispering” (Vincent Rose) from UIUC’s Jazz Trombone Ensemble’s performance at jazz forum last week (Friday, January 26, 2024). At times, I find myself not playing as much classic jazz vocabulary and rather exploring different scales, sounds, and intervallic and more abstract “harmony.” Of course, the swing and bebop traditions are forever embedded in my musical DNA, so I think it’s...

That descending A triad on the Db7 is such a nice sound (11th bar)

Thank you, all a musician can ask for is to spread some beauty 🎶

Well done Peter and the band . Me personally I think Jack Teagarden was in a different league altogether. He practically revolutionised the style of trombone playing , I'd go as far as saying he was a musical genius , the documentary of him and what his singer said on Tommy Dorsey n how she became aware the difference between the two players reafirmed what i thought anyway . Take for example Mighty Lak A Rose , his intonation and tone quality was 2nd to none. Genius Peter
Here are the recordings where the solos were selected from: czcams.com/play/PLJ7Fp0ae1p2HID3BSKtZ8Z2SJutUkp8uD.html&si=znE5wPjnpA5fjwUy.
I owned a Shires medium bore set up that had a large shank leed pipe. I'm convinced it's the best compromise between the two. It's like the best of both worlds.
Hi Peter , I think the early stuff that was recorded there was a big difference between the normal bone player and the guys on those recordings. It was considered a big thing to get something recorded back then , not like now. Back when the music was still new to the general public those players were the pioneers. The trom is difficult enough and as time went on say the 30's n 40's the standard went sky high due to the amount of players who were looking for jobs and most of them had to be able to play what was getting recorded at the time n man some of the best trombone was getting played , in the 40s n 50's , it was the same except more finesse n well polished.
Thanks for sharing, John. I hadn't thought about this perspective, which makes sense. It would be interesting to talk to a trombonist who played during this time and get their take on the scene!
@@jazzboneptI'm glad it made sense to you . I was v lucky to have a dad who was playing jazz trom during the 50's , he learnt most of his craft from Teagarden recordings.
I found it difficult to pitch I'm a beginner now for 2 weeks still found it difficult to pitch the upper notes l t d
Just always do the warm up and lip slurs as you do it with proper practice and patience ur lips will eventually get used in upper registers

This is the same as the Kurt elling sydney symphny arrangement i think
It was based off the album version; I was asked to do a big band adaption for this group some years ago
@@jazzbonept amazing you done a wicked job. Check out the Sydney orchestra one
@@HumzahAwan just viewed a version of them with Kurt from 16 years ago. Wow! It seems to be a crowd favorite, so makes sense why it'd be orchestrated for various formats
And the more you click, the more videos from that version are presented to you. Which is very good! 3:13
Would like to hear you really ripe on the horn
which one, large or small?
Im a saxophone player alto tenor an baritone .lm waiting for a trombone in the mailI like the small bore what would be the best mouthpiece for a small bore trombone? Thank you .😊
Thanks. Very good lesson.
I never blow that hard.
Good job!

Yes!
@@p.r.martin1522thanks, Pete!
Me with my trigger trombone😊
Why?
I threw caution out the window and just ordered a 2024 Schagerl TB-420F Venus Trombone: Specifications: • Tune: B/F • Bell: Yellow brass 8,5 • Bore: 13,89 mm • Slides: Nickel silver Inner- & Outer Slides • Finish: lacquered ETA June 1st 2024
So this proves what exactly, that we didn't know?
Excellent comparison video. It brought out many of the differences. The Large Bore is a broader sounding trombone. The medium bore has a more focused an articulate sound. I tend to like the medium bore sound a little better. Great video.
great information for me
great player,top work
This is really helpful! I have been trying to learn to solo on trombone but it’s been extremely hard to find good trombone soloists to listen to! Now I have an idea of what I could do in a solo!
Like a French horn
how many bars is it? also is there a transcription?
It's different I'll say this much Peter, bit of lip trilling and Jaws, you weren't in the film orchestra were you ❤ I'm practising the F G A Bb F in short 4th , you played some nice licks though 😊
Thank you again for playing the sh#t out of this! All you!
❤🎉😂RIP⚘️❤️👏🏾🙌🏾UNCLEEEEEEEEEEE. I watched that show faithful hoping one day I will make it on there
There is a difference of course, but the essential quality of the sound remains the same. Both versions have similar core. This once again bears out what I already know, that understanding the style one is playing is more important than equipment. Equipment does matter, but more important is how you play it. Both horns sound great here, best of luck
I like this arrangement. Who is the trombonist on the original recording? Nice solo, Peter.
CONGRATULATIONS
What key are you playing this in?
...now it's ready to put expression i.e. sense into. Listen carefully to chet! I know, these phrases aren't easy to play sensitive, especially not for the trombone.
😋

This is beautiful!
thank you! hope you enjoyed it
Well played Peter . For the 1st time today I played like I've always wanted with authority and control of the partials as I was playing licks as I came up the slide from 4th position through 3rd and 2nd position suprising myself as I played. It was like yeah this is the way I have been wanting to play for a long time. When we impress ourself it has to be good along with clean smooth tone. Very happy today I am. Long may it continue
I'm preforming this in one hour!
