Modern Trombone SOLO on "Whispering"

My solo on “Whispering” (Vincent Rose) from UIUC’s Jazz Trombone Ensemble’s performance at jazz forum last week (Friday, January 26, 2024). At times, I find myself not playing as much classic jazz vocabulary and rather exploring different scales, sounds, and intervallic and more abstract “harmony.” Of course, the swing and bebop traditions are forever embedded in my musical DNA, so I think it’s more about what I’m listening to, what I’m hearing, and how I’m feeling at any given performance. In this case, it’s mostly melodic minor and major third sounds, so it’s not really that abstract (apart from the end). I also feel spoiled to play with a rhythm section that will go ANYWHERE! Enjoy🎶

Well played Peter . For the 1st time today I played like I've always wanted with authority and control of the partials as I was playing licks as I came up the slide from 4th position through 3rd and 2nd position suprising myself as I played. It was like yeah this is the way I have been wanting to play for a long time. When we impress ourself it has to be good along with clean smooth tone. Very happy today I am.
