Reproduction 1842 "Palmetto" Musket - Unboxing

Unboxing video of the Palmetto Musket. It was basically a copy of the 1842 Springfield smoothbore musket that was produced in the 1850's in S.C. The main difference being the brass hardware on the Palmetto vs the Springfield.

    I have one of these. Over the years i swapped out parts for original parts. Nowadays, the only reproduction parts are the barrel , the internal lock parts and the wooden stock. The original lock plate is a Harper's Ferry lock plate date stamped 1844. When i bought mine, it does not have all of the modern markings on the barrel, except it does have the modern I.D. number on the left side of the breech and every other markings are of Harper's Ferry arsenal.

    James River Armory used to do a "defarb" and proper marking service on repro BP muskets. They offered both the guns complete and also did a send yours in and they would do the work for you. You might check and see if they still do. It would be nice to have one properly marked with the year, the eagle and Springfield on the lock plate, plus any makers marks removed from visible areas, plus an inspector's cartouche as well. Personally, I have wanted to get the 1842 musket, plus I have been interested in seeing if I could get a "blem" with a stock and barrel that could be cut down to carbine length like some of them were.

    How much finishing work did the barrel require? I put together a TC ML about 35 years ago. I had to draw file the barrel flats and polish it to achieve the finish I was going for. I browned that barrel and used a lighter stain and finish than your did. Your barrel looks really nice with shine to it. Did you have the bright steel plated with something or do you just wax or oil the metal parts? It came out great IMHO

  • @wiseguysoutdoors2954
    @wiseguysoutdoors2954 Před 2 lety

    All you need for proper ignition in a Flintlock is a 1/8" line of 4FG bisecting the pan. Any more than that gives a hang fire, as well as a big flash, hence causing you to flinch. And you want at least 65 gr of barrel powder to start with. 45 gr is NOT ENOUGH POWDER for a barrel charge! The reason for the delay is far too much flash powder. 50 years of Flintlock rifle experience. Average barrel charge is 75 - 80 gr, up to 110 gr. Anything less than 60 gr is not enough powder for reliable performance, also, replace the touch hole with an aftermarket RMC that installs with an Allen wrench. Also, a black English flint is most reliable. DO NOT FILL THE FLASH PAN, just a 1/8" line from touch hole to the outside edge of the pan is plenty and you will have far more reliable ignition, far less frustration and less fouling, flinching and way more fun!!

    First, I hope you are back working. This has been rough for so many people. I used to build custom bolt guns and about ten years ago I just got burned out on making them. So I decided while my eyes still could focus on iron sights I would give the 17th century a try. So, other than buying Colerain barrels and the locks from Muzzle Loaders Building supply, i do the rest by hand. So, basically I build my flintlocks from scratch and as you mention it takes time. But I hunt with my guns and spend a lot of time working up various loads. I wish you well on your kits and also keep up the videos. You might look at a Jim Kibler kit... or take a look at Muzzle Loaders Builder supply website, both are fantastic people and you can really put your kills to the test.

    There is no reason to fire a priming charge in the pan without a main charge unless you want to test the spark from the flint. the reason you do it with a percussion gun is to clear grease or fouling from in front of the nipple. In a flinter, you do that with the pick.

    Pedersoli flintlocks tend to have to small of a touch hole. Drill it out to 1/16 . Also do not fill pan to level of touch hole. Always use vent pick. Flintlocks are addicting.
